so in a couple of words: a 18 year old man falls blindly in love with a 13 year old girl after meeting her only once, causing the man's best friend and the girls nephew to die in a duel, after which the 13 year old girl takes the man's side, even though she had only met him once, instead of her families side. Some things are merely studied to enrich ones life. To be able to read and understand Shakespeare is part of being an educated person.
In 15-20 years time it would be interesting to hear you answer your own question. If you're here to study, I'd highly suggest watching the 1996 movie with Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes. I had heard about this story more clearly from one of my English teacher. She also added that Rosaline wanted to spend her life being a vergin. I felt sad and tears started to come out of my eyes. I felt sad . I had watched the whole movie but i had not felt sad at that time.

I started writing out the entire plot of the play using this video, thinking it would take me roughly half an hour lol, but there was so much detail it took me 3 and a half hours!😂
@triplek96 It's "love at first sight." I think Romeo is ridiculous because he had been SERIOUSLY depressed over Rosaline, hiding out in the woods, moping around for days, so, so sad that she rejected him, and then he goes to the party hoping to catch a glimpse of Rosaline, sees Juliet and --BAM!! -- he forgets all about Rosaline and falls completely in love with a stranger (and later stalks her home that night and they agree to marry about 2 hours later). wow. I feel bad for Juliet.
Wouldn't have worked, that drug made the pulse so low, no one could've detected it. Honestly, all of this could've been avoided if the friar had used more wisdom and told Romeo not to marry someone he met they day before, even if peace between the families was the goal. They would've been better off eloping and both families would've still had to face the damage their petty feud had done. Overall, it's still an interesting story.
85% of the book doesn't make sense, this makes 100% sense, people say that Shakespeare is the best thing that has ever happened to the english language well i say R.I.P english because most of his work is like new words that no one has any idea what it means.
Well Shakespeare had an great influence on the british language. The story is easy to understand. Two starcrossed lovers who find their peace in eternal death, but that is not the point really. Shakespeare's language was so modern and important for poetry. Before Shakespeare the British language was pretty simple and more of a "peasant tongue." By combining old latin words with the common British tongue he more or less created a new language. Words like education (from the Latin word "educare") or to ascend (from the Latin word "ascendere") are just a few examples. Theatre was like a new magazine or tv-show in the Elizabethan age. In addition to the language, he changed the role of the woman. Before Shakespeare women were not allowed to be an actor on stage. Because of Shakespeare's plays where men were turning into women, who were turning into men throughout the whole play the status of women was influenced greatly. These are just some examples of a student who is taking a test tomorrow, but if you are not aware of the reason why Shakespeare is taught. Study him. He's interesting and much more important: His work is interesting.
well no offense but im more of a memorizer, which is why i like science and history, but not Shakespeare history, i come from spain :) oh and im also a gamer so....... yeah i have many weaknesses in school almost fell asleep when reading the book finally i said F this where is sparknotes xD
You are right about Shakespeare. He may not be the worst writer but he definitely came nowhere near as a good writer. Most of his works are lazy or are copied from other people’s works. Compared to other English writer such as George Bernard, his works look like pieces of trash. It cringes me out how many people simply claim Shakespeares’ works to be masterpiece just because critics say so or because they have an great influence on British language.
@@jimmyli319 i also love it how people mistake the scottish as proper english, and theyre accents. The sad truth is that the scottish lost their own language called Gaelic, most people mistake the scottish and irish english speaking as the "true english" because they pronounce everything so differently, theres a lot of false information surrounding our education these days
Anyone remember that mission in Spyro 2 where you have to create bean stalks just to get to Juliet? At first I was questioning why Juliet is a bird and Romero is a worm but looking back it makes sense. In the book, the two families that Romeo and Juliet are from hate each other. In Spyro, there's a war going on between two levels. Just thought I'd point that out
I know this is seven years old, but it's probably good to mention that Rosaline is a Capulet. I know that most people are going to watch this for school instead of reading the play, and that fact is pretty obscure yet important.
Hunter Rhyme a 300 year old play that has stood the test of time and remains to be one of the most twisted, emotional, fantastically brilliant plays ever written. It's incredible, and I would like to see you try to argue otherwise.
Well for one it uses *old* English, a dead dialect. I know from personal experience that my generation finds it sloppy how Romeo and Juliet instantly fall in love, and it is, as you stated - a *play*. Not a novel, but a dramatic piece. It's more appropriate for drama, not an English room.
Joshua Binkley The novel didn't really exist as a form until the early 19th century. So I suppose all English literature until that time doesn't count?
This shouldn’t be what we have to read and watch. This play is definitely not one of Shakespeare’s best works so if they want us to get into poetry and olden plays and story’s make us read and watch someone of his best work!!!! Ps, I am also here for homework :p
There's a way that seems rite but ends to death. But if death is necessary to reconcile two families nevertheless. I ❤ the fact that they both loved each other. I hate the fact they had to experience death because of disagreements between the two families. Only if Romeo had patience, the ending wouldn't have been a memorial but a tutorial of more destruction. Romeo and Juliet or Montague and Capulet? The title is physically seen but spiritually witnessed for the sole purpose of the conclusion...................
Romeo and juliet is a horror flick about the dangers of falling in love and going against your parent's wishes. Had they talked to their parents instead of secretly getting married they'd have ended the family feud with no blood shed. Instead they started a chain of events that led to their demise. But life is not worth living without...puppy love...seriously this took place in the span of 2 weeks. For all you teens forced to read this, just keep this in mind.
I might be the only one not watching for school reasons, I'm actually intrigued by Radiohead's song Exit music(for a film). the song is kind of about this story and I wanted to know more of it.
I just realized 99% of the people watching are here for school reasons while I'm here (probably with also some people) who aren't just here because of school reasons.

I think Romeo is ridiculous because he had been SERIOUSLY depressed over Rosaline, hiding out in the woods, moping around for days, so, so sad that she rejected him, and then he goes to the party hoping to catch a glimpse of Rosaline, sees Juliet and --BAM!! -- he forgets all about Rosaline and falls completely in love with a stranger (and later stalks her home that night and they agree to marry about 2 hours later). wow. I feel bad for Juliet.
fr lol. I cant believe this comment is from 12 years ago
Exam in like 5 hours about all Shakespear's stories. I'm dead.
u passed it?
Good Luck Too Everybody Doing Finals Tommm ❤️💯
Ummm, did anyone know how to check pulses and breath back then??!
Nope
Wouldn't have worked, that drug made the pulse so low, no one could've detected it. Honestly, all of this could've been avoided if the friar had used more wisdom and told Romeo not to marry someone he met they day before, even if peace between the families was the goal. They would've been better off eloping and both families would've still had to face the damage their petty feud had done. Overall, it's still an interesting story.
Have a exam tomorrow thanks 😅😅😅😅
85% of the book doesn't make sense, this makes 100% sense, people say that Shakespeare is the best thing that has ever happened to the english language well i say R.I.P english because most of his work is like new words that no one has any idea what it means.
shakespearese, a dialect of English.
"Benvolio promises to help Romeo forget about her." (sexy music starts)
People still using this to this day 😭🙏
I love Romeo and Juliet it is my favorite work from William Shakespeare.

Exam today
5:32 AM currently
when you wait until the last day to finish all-semester assignments.

AHAHAH THE NURSE'S FACE
This 3 hours before an exam hits different.
friar lawrence low-key the goat
The G.O.A.T.
I know this is seven years old, but it's probably good to mention that Rosaline is a Capulet. I know that most people are going to watch this for school instead of reading the play, and that fact is pretty obscure yet important.
Exam in 28 min 34 seconds thanks
Recommend this to anyone who thinks it’s a romantic love story
Good vid I've got a exam tomorrow and this vid helps me revise
Our teacher is making us animate this story...
R.I.P
Praying for you
Thanks for this video. Its so stupid we are even required to know this.
300 years from now, kids will be complaining why they have to what and study the movie wreck it Ralph :D
Joshua Binkley If you think this is old English you'll be terrified when you see actual old English... this is only early modern english
Joshua Binkley The novel didn't really exist as a form until the early 19th century. So I suppose all English literature until that time doesn't count?
I watched this in 9th grade, and then I watched it again to remember last year.
wowwwww
This shouldn’t be what we have to read and watch. This play is definitely not one of Shakespeare’s best works so if they want us to get into poetry and olden plays and story’s make us read and watch someone of his best work!!!!
Ps, I am also here for homework :p
Nice summary.....I haven't read or watched this since high school.... Seeing it much differently now at 61!
Took my class two weeks to read the play. This took 9 min. It's a very good study guide a test or exam.
This helped me better understand the story.
Fun fact: the original cast were all men :)
It should’ve been Romeo and Justin
I feel that Romeo and Julian would sound more accurate.
I laughed soo hard at this
never has the comment section feelt more relatable
I like the narrator girl's voice. The summary is really good as well. Just the basic story, no ancient artsy stuff. Well done.
Good luck with GCSEs everyone!!!
You too
Romeo and juliet is a horror flick about the dangers of falling in love and going against your parent's wishes.
Rewriting Romeo and Juliet as a horror movie (probably A24 style)? Challenge accepted.
worse than 2 weeks the whole thing took place over the span of 4 days 😭
I might be the only one not watching for school reasons, I'm actually intrigued by Radiohead's song Exit music(for a film). the song is kind of about this story and I wanted to know more of it.
I read the whole book, and I am watching this because it's my favorite book ever!
very touching story. where with this existence we really need each other.. hopefully your creations will always grow
imagine reading and having a test on the original version of Romeo and Juliet in 1970 with no internet
She's thirteen........ wtf
+Livwen Absotol they made a mistake shes 14-15
+DarthFX™ I've heard she's 13.

I just realized 99% of the people watching are here for school reasons while I'm here (probably with also some people) who aren't just here because of school reasons.
