    I love how the lack of knowledge of US history is indicative of how they ARE a citizen.

    I’m really glad they included the Cambodian man and he spoke about the Khmer Rouge, recently I went to Cambodia and learnt about it for the first time and like he said half the country died. It’s shocking something like that happened and no one knows about it. Children and adults dug there graves and died in them after travelling to the field from a prison. Once you went to prison you would definitely die only 4 people who were arrested escaped. What scared me the most was seeing the blood in prison cell floors and going to the killing fields and seeing bones and scaps of clothes

    • @thebookishkhmerican4303
      @thebookishkhmerican4303 5 ปีที่แล้ว +60

      Ann I didn’t know anything about the Cambodian genocide until I was in my last years of high school because of my own curiosity to discover my family history. My Cambodian family never talked or mentioned anything about the war or even being Cambodian and what that meant to be Cambodian. The history is not taught in schools at all here in the U.S. or even in our homes many times and it’s a very sad reality.

    • @thebookishkhmerican4303
      @thebookishkhmerican4303 5 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      Hannah Ramsey I totally agree with you. I am Cambodian American born in California, but later moved to Hawaii and I never learned anything about Cambodia or the history at all until high school when I became personally curious about discovering my family history. Now, I’m definitely know a lot more than before about my roots through my efforts to learn Khmer and now having very close friends within the Khmer community, but every once in a while, I still feel that disconnection to my cultural roots because I have that American side of myself also. It’s a fine balance between the two, so I definitely wish that schools here in the U.S. would at least talk about it and include Cambodia and Cambodian people into the conversation about the aftermath and consequences of war and what that looks like rather than only talking solely about the Vietnam war and World War II.

      I don't know if you are aware, but U.S citizens do not have an obligation to take people into their country just because they WANT to be U.S citizens. If these are such great people that have something to offer our country, why are their countries a complete disaster with horrible under-developed economies and mass violence? Doesn't the negative culture of ones country say something about the society these people were raised in, and therefore something about them as individuals. All I am saying is taking in people from violent backwards countries is a risk to Americans, and we deserve to have a seat at the decision table instead of having our immigration policy dictated by what Democrats in Washington D.C think is morally acceptable. Look at a place like Long Island where MS-13 is particularly active, and it becomes apparent that loose immigration policies have consequences. However liberals will never fess up to the deaths they have caused because of the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965. It is not about being closed minded nor racist. It is not racist to preserve your way of life, in fact it might pass for intelligence.

      emma mcguire i think that a big part of that is us citizens take a whole year of tests that are a lot less strict (passing wise) in 7/8th grade and we generally won’t retain all of that information whereas citizens who took THE test had to retain a lot more information in a lot less time at (usually) a lot older age, so they take a lot more effort to remember. I think that they know more because either they learned it all more recently than us born citizens and they took the test/studied for it so much that it’s permanently burned into their brains. i know all the information from the constitution was burned into my memory in 7th grade but now i couldn’t tell you much about it.

    • @jordanrinker4163
      @jordanrinker4163 6 ปีที่แล้ว +44

      emma mcguire and also the us education system has no doubt failed us all so even a whole year of civics probably didn’t teach us anything useful anyways

    • @LamesWivams
      @LamesWivams 6 ปีที่แล้ว +72

      The main reason is because U.S. Citizens typically learn these things early in their childhood, and then never have to use it again. Immigrants that come into the country are expected to prove their selves by either taking the test or having the knowledge. So in their case they have more incentives to learn and retain the knowledge. And if they recently became a citizen then knowledge learned is still fresh on their minds.
      Think of kids in the 9th grade. You ask them question about the war of 1812 and they would know more than someone who already graduated from high school 10 years ago. Why? Because they are learned about it the week before.

    • @giabarrone7422
      @giabarrone7422 6 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      I am American born and raised and was given the test (to try and prove your point) in the 7th grade. I passed it though. I would probably fail now, as that knowledge is completely useless in my adult life. For example, I am an engineer, so the quadratic formula is seared into my brain. If you asked the average adult, they probably wouldn't be able to recite it on command.

    • @BrehiaReacts
      @BrehiaReacts 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      True. Because for example in my case, we learned this type of information in Middle School and then when you get older, it's hard to retain that knowledge because throughout school I learned to study and learn what I need to to pass a test or class, but it's temporary knowledge because once the test/class is passed, I don't think/worry about it anymore because I have other classes to learn things for. & I think that's how it is for a lot of U.S. born citizens too (though not all of course). & Plus, as you get older (high school & college), there's more freedom to choose what classes you take so not everyone is going to pick classes like history and U.S. Geography so that means there's plenty of people not reviewing the knowledge & information learned in middle school, so it doesn't become permanent knowledge. So yea, that's why adult U.S. born citizens like me don't really know/remember this kind of knowledge unlike an adult that's applying for U.S. citizenship. Which is kind of sad.

    I don't even know half of the answers to the questions the lawyer was asking and I'm in AP American History😂😂😂

    • @gfox9295
      @gfox9295 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      AP American History covers 100s of years of history, it has to be more general. Whereas the citizenship test mostly covers the dawn of the nation (1776ish era) and the constitution and laws and such specifically... and maybe learning all 40+ presidents or whatever... but not the whole shebang. It's way more specific.

      It wasn't that he was asking test-specific questions. It's because he acted in a way that made him seem all-knowing because he was an immigration lawyer, yet he got so many wrong

    • @gfox9295
      @gfox9295 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      +natalie r He knows that. He even said at one point that a foreigner who moves to the US and takes the US citizenship test is more likely to know the answers he was asking than many (if not most) US citizens from birth who never had to take a test to join the club.
      As I posted elsewhere, here was the problem... He was trying to use the test questions/answers to figure out whether people were citizens or not... but there are 3 states of being:
      1) didn't know most of the answers/gave a blank stare/silence -- US Citizen from birth who didn't pay attention in school (aka "typical American") but didn't have to take a citizenship test...
      2) didn't know most of the answers but seemed more "foreign" to him for whatever reason -- immigrant who might be in line to become a citizen but hasn't studied for and taken the test yet...
      3) knew the answers = US Citizen (but not by birth) because they've taken the test or else they wouldn't know the answers.
      IOW, he was counting on finding some out through that 3rd option. But 1st/2nd options muddy the waters and tripped him up, causing him to get the most wrong of the three people playing the game.

      I like how you said "you" as in everyone in this comments chain is over 200 years old and was responsible for that. No shit Americans shouldn't have treated them as they did, but we can't change history. People need to stop whining and get off their asses and help the remaining natives on reservations who are often impoverished. A family friend of mine goes on a mission trip every year to help natives in Arizona, but I don't see her taking fault for the atrocities done to them. That's because whining about unchangeable history helps nothing, but you CAN help by actually doing something like Native American Reservation Poverty Relief, or donating to such a cause.

      At least in America there are a variety of foreigners. Go anywhere else in the world and do you even see a variety of foreigners? And if you do see them, I bet you can count the number of them on your hand AND I bet they are tourists bringing foreign money to that country. Say what you want about America, but all the world's citizens come here by the millions each year, name another country where that happens...

    • @gfox9295
      @gfox9295 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh, it seems pretty human. I traveled a lot (for an American, at least) as a kid... 30 countries or so, lived in Japan for awhile... and plenty of Japanese people would say something similar to that, so... not sure why you're singling out Americans for sensing someone is "other" than them. All people do it to some degree or another.
