2 Hours of Peaceful Ancient Greek Harp Music

- A few weeks ago I was making a cover of the ancient Greek tune "Seikilos' Song" (an ancient Greek tune which I arranged into a full soundtrack like composition, watch it here: • Seikilos' Song 🏛 Anc... ). I discovered Seikilos' Song was composed in an interesting sounding ancient scale. I started improvising melodies on that scale and decided to make an ambient track out of it. All melodies in this track are improvised, yet inspired by ancient Greek music with a bit of a soundtrack feel to it. Ideal for those who like background music when studying or relaxing but want the music to bring them into a somewhat mystic ancient atmosphere. Relax and enjoy!

There are 2 famous scenes where Odysseus starts to cry while he listens to Demodocus, the bard or minstrel at the court of Alcinous. In more modern illustrations, Demodocus is depicted with a harp.
Achilles playing to Patroclus by the ocean under a tree. Patroclus has his back against the tree just listening to Achilles play. His fingers lightly plucking the strings as the ocean waves crash in the background.

We know that the Byzantine modes or HXOI are modified ancient modes that recipes for melodies. Often people read ancient notation and the results are very simple melodies that do not fit the high degree of skill seen in the sculpture of that period. Most likely the notation gives us only a simplified scheme of the melody. The Greek kithara was shown by P Pringle to produce microtones like you can get by using the lever on an electrical guitar. This shows that the construction of the kithara enabled the player to make very many pitches....a lot more than could be notated by the ancient Greek symbols for instrumental music.
@@alexgabriel5423 Thanks for the info Alex. I know Peter Pringle but I didn't know he showed that the kithara was able to produce microtones. With all this extra knowledge I'm motivated to compose a more authentic sounding ancient Greek track, but I'll have to find the time for that first. :)

I agree, mixolydian has a slightly more nuanced feel than ionic. So when I "discovered" the mixolydian mode, I just had to compose something in it, because it's nice to know how you can compose something happy and peaceful without sounding it like a standard major pop tune.

In case you did not know, harps in ancient Greece were played using a bow on the main, for a more continuous sound, like violas and similar chord instruments

Hi again! I just want to tell you that, for me, this is the most beautiful video that exists on the Internet. Many times over the past year, I have found myself returning to this video whenever I most needed to do some deep inner reflection and really focus on moral improvement. The music -- how do I even begin to describe how exquisite it is? -- is the most sublime composition I have ever encountered. It makes me think of immortality, forget all the pettiness I've ever felt in my daily life, and, for a brief moment, be completely invulnerable to emotions of sadness, envy, and anger. Your music paints a picture of a perfect soul, the kind of soul I want to have. I don't listen simply for pleasure. In fact, I only put it on when I am in the mood for serious thinking and self-interrogation. To listen to this music without striving for edification seems (to me, at least) to not do your talents justice. Of course, the images of both nature and architecture also make me more appreciative of life and creativity in general. I could go and on and I know I sound a bit crazy, but I want you to know what a fabulous job you have done with this composition. Plato himself would be captivated by it.
Hello MrShengai, thank you so much for your beautiful comment! The truth is that I made this specific composition without much thinking, actually more like a partly intuïtive improvisation. That makes it a more fluid and perhaps simpler composition compared to my other compositions. But I wanted to channel a specific ancient etheric sound and it seems that resonated well with you. I really like the fact that you use the harmonies I've provided here to retune your mind into harmony again. I think striving for beauty and harmony in life is a good way to develop both your creative skills and your character. Thank you for your comment. I hope you do find that peace but I believe it's not just a matter of hope. Sometimes all you need is something that is so captivating that you keep thinking about it and those nice thoughts drown out the negative thoughts. That is really a powerful thing. For example: Last few weeks I've been trying to play the Rohan theme from the Lord of the Rings soundtrack on my viola. I've spent a lot of time listening and playing that tune which means that I think a lot about that beautiful peace of music and the movie it was from. And after a few days I've noticed there's less space in my head for worrying and I feel inspired by this little musical project and therefore in a good mood. So hopefully you get inspired as well by some music or other beautiful thing online or in your life and experience the healing that comes with that :)

Studying Plato while listening to this music is terrific

The Myxolydian mode has many harmonics or overtones. The ancient modes as they are learned in W Europe are in equal temperament whereas the Byzantine modes are in microtones and in a Pythagorean system with one whole tone made up of 9 little parts or commas of Pythagoras. Several keyboards with different tonal spacing are needed to provide all pitches used in the Byzantine repertoire. The Byzantine modes still used in the Greek church are known to be modified ancient modes in a hypo form. Therefore the ancient modes must have had a tonal makeup that is like that of the Byzantine modes. The Ottoman tanbur is the instrument on whose neck there are the marks necessary to play Byzantine modes. The instrument then predates the Ottoman Empire.
That's pretty interesting Alex, thanks for your comment! The difference between equal and more 'natural' temperaments can indeed be quite profound. Maybe one day I will compose some Byzantine tunes in a more authentic tuning because those ancient temperaments have something pure about them that is lacking in modern music.

THANK YOU, Hans. This music is taking me to Epidaurus for healing of my broken body/brain after a fall/concussion/broken wrist. I know nothing of the Lydian mode, but this allowed me to sleep after a terrible night at the ER. This music may derive from the holistic healing practiced at Epidaurus? Anyway, for me the visual and sound presentation is healing for my soul and for our world soul (from which all healing arises): the gentle sounds suggested by nature penetrate the brokenness of our human efforts (including the most noble) to solidify/hold onto the beautiful forms in nature. I appreciate the beauty and nobility, but even what humans do not destroy is eroded by nature or gives itself over to the sounds or clouds of music, only to give birth to the next natural revelation, often from the water from which we emerged and which resonates within our tissue and connects us all, no matter what arises next, whether a flight of birds or an ancient piece of marble. An olive (?) tree of life may arise, and we are left with its reflection in the water, which dissolves into the soft darkness where we stay for a while. Only the music lets us know it is not the end. At this time when our world is being destroyed by human hubris and greed, and our imperfect democracy (thank you, Greece) as well, this presentation and music of the spheres offers much rest and restoration for our souls, and I venture to suggest for the worldsoul of which we are a part. The sound vibrations will go on, and something more will emerge. Thank you, Hans. Thank you, universe.
Hello Mary, thanks for your kind words and interesting comment! I'm still kinda unfamiliar with the Greek classics so I had to read up on Epidaurus. I really find Epidaurus an interesting place and it sounds like they practiced a really wholesome way of healing that I approved very much of.
I'm so glad my music has contributed to a bit of peace for you when you needed it. The way you describe the changes as seen in nature and in the world remind me of Taoism. I like to see most worldly events in this way, as developing and ultimately passing and devoloping into something new.
It's interesting that you mention that music and sound is something like a universal energy that keeps on existing, while more material things pass and perish. Many ancient worldviews have this concept of life being created by a sound and when we look at the science of cymatics we can see that sound creates a harmonious kind of order. And I think that music has the ability to return disharmonious people/cells/materials back to this harmonious order. So yes, I very much like and totally agree with your comment! @@OurMagicalNature Thanks for responding. I am a fan of Norse, Celtic and Greek paganism. The Norse Goddess Nerthus fascinates me. Tacitus records how the Mother Goddess icon would be taken from its island sanctuary and drawn on a bullock cart through the countryside visiting village after village. The warlike Germanic peoples would lay down their weapons, uniting to rejoice as normal time was suspended in the presence of divinity.

Interesting, I haven't thought of that reference yet but now you point it out, it has a bit of that atmosphere indeed. By coincidence I've listened to the classic Tomb Raider soundtracks a few weeks ago and I also like those soundtracks.

Depuis les temps les plus anciens le tambour le tambourin et le lyre sont des instruments qui ont existé. Tu me dis que rien ne change s'est peut être les vibrations musicales qui ont changé le monde et pas les guerres qui detruisent le bien des peuples. This reminds me of Lady Jane by the Rolling Stones. Steve Vai always characterises the Mixolydian mode as 'The Sound of Summer' but this piece of music has a more haunted 'Lost Somewhere in Time' feel to it.
I know what you mean with 'The Sound of Summer". The famous Greek song Seikilos Epitath sure has that feeling to it. I listened to Lady Jane and it's a good song, also has that dreamy sound. and it sounds like it's also in mixolydian mode.

Thanks for your kind words! ^_^ Unfortunately it's been too long ago since I edited this video so I forgot wat the place at 20:10 is called but if you really want to know you could probably use Google's "reverse image search". It's a way of searching for information by uploading a picture to google and it searches its database and shows you related pictures and info. You could make a screenshot or a photo of the screen with your phone and use it in the reverse image search. I hope you will find it!
