Oh god don't remind me, that is the one of the biggest Oscar fuck up years. Giving Best Picture to Forrest Gump when it should have gone to Pulp Fiction or at least The Shawshank Redemption. Now they regret it, but now is too late.

He's easily my favorite panelist. Even when I disagree with what he says, he brings up some really good points that sometimes sway me over to his opinion. For instance, I actually liked Pearl Harbor but after hearing why he hated it, he did kind of make me see it in a new light.

Minor TH-cam celeb I follow posting in a series I follow... play it cool, don't be a starf***er, don't blurt out random Echidna, Dolphin or Duck facts and questions, or about wanting more Let's Plague and Huge Quest.
Yeah I can see where there is sometimes confusion on the panel with the questions... Andy frequently gets off topic or alters the question significantly from what it seems to be asking in spirit.
To me the spirit of the question usually "reads"; "Most Iconic (Insert qualifying word here)".
Like with the Tim Burton question - his most Iconic movies are typically considered ESH, Beetlegeuse and (arguably) Sweeny Todd. Those movies are stylistically dripping in everything Burton has come to use in future works, and considered his best most iconic works (with Batman and Peewee' getting honorable mentions). But Andy decided to judge that round a little more strictly to the wording.

      What about 1978?
-Grease. The of the greatest musical movies ever
-Superman. The movie that pioneered, serious box office super hero movies.
-National Lampoon's Animal House. One of the best comedies ever. And actually was the one that took slap stick to a new level. And is the leader of gross out humor. Done right!
-Every Which Way but Loose. A great Clint Eastwood movie. That took him out of being typcasted as the bad ass hero. And grounded him as an everyday guy.
-Revenge of the Pink Panther. Peter Sellers, last full time performance. And he went out with a huge bang. Making not only one of the funniest comedies. But, also one of the funniest sequels to an already established franchise(which is much harder to do).
-The Deer Hunter. One of the rare times. Where you can see how great Christopher Walken really is. He has amazing range. And can pull you in. That Russian roulette scene. Awesome. It brought out Walken, DeNiro & Streep into the spotlight. And all were terrific.
-Halloween. What can i say? It brought out horror movies from the shadows(after almost a 15 year drought). And made em relevant again. It was one of the first slasher movies. But, also perfected it. There's been alot of movies that tried to duplicate the success. And even succeeding with the formula(Friday the 13th). But, none can say. They made a flawless slasher movie. It's the only one.

Best year for films, arguably 1994, Pulp Fiction, Forrest Gump, Shawshank Redemption. Any of these 3 could have won Best Picture and no one could complain. There hasn't been another year where 3 truly great movies have been released.

Those aren't great films; they're relics of pop culture which people often reference.
      Forrest Gump was never great.
Pulp Fiction isn't even Tarantino's best film.

    • @JakeJoeyYoey
      @JakeJoeyYoey 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I agree Pulp Fictions not his best, in my opinion Django is. But this still doesn't change that Pulp Fiction is a masterpiece. Like I said, there's never been a year with 3 films like these being released.

    • @goldifying
      @goldifying 9 ปีที่แล้ว +8

What do you mean, 'like these' ?
1980- Raging Bull, Empire Strikes Back, The Shining
1981- Raiders of the Lost Ark, An American Werewolf in London, Das Boot
1982- E.T, Blade Runner, Pink Floyd - The Wall
      E.T.C.
My point being, any of these years decimates your selection and yet I've chosen to refer to a decade seen as a general low point in art and culture and when box office gross was historically the lowest it's ever been.
The films of 1994 are particular to you and your generation; they represent your awareness of culture and society in relation to the present 'pop culture' landscape, whereby everything is a 'remix of a remix', and from there comes your flimsy denotation of what constitutes a masterpiece.
*Note that Forrest Gump is the worst offender of the 3.

I'd say some important years for American cinema were 1939 (Gone With the Wind, Wizard of Oz), 1974 (Godfather Part II, Chinatown, The Conversation), 1967 (In The Heat of the Night, Bonnie and Clyde, The Graduate), 1976 (Rocky, Network, All the Presidents Men, Taxi Driver), and 1994 (Pulp Fiction, Forrest Gump, Shawshank Redemption). Feel free to add on more years that you feel are extremely important.

    • @Nieghorn
      @Nieghorn 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I'll echo 1939 ... they had ten films up for best picture, which fall into 'cherished classics' category: Dark Victory, Gone With the Wind (The winner), Goodbye, Mr. Chips, Love Affair, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Ninotchka, Of Mice and Men, Stagecoach (every ensemble movie with diverse characters copies this), The Wizard of Oz, Wuthering Heights. There are also classics that didn't make that cut: Hunchback of Notre Dame, Gunga Din, Drums Along the Mohawk, Destry Rides Again, The Four Feathers, The Hound of the Baskervilles, Only Angels Have Wings, Young Mr. Lincoln, The Roaring Twenties.

I think it would be a good idea to assign a 'theme' to each Movie Fight, in the way that This American Life ties all of their stories together with a common thread. The questions posed to the players are from all over the place and nothing really holds it together in one cohesive piece. For example, next week's theme could be "Childhood Memories", "All Action", or maybe "Future of Cinema" and then have each question relate to that theme in some way. That would really differentiate this great show from the other movie review shows!

I'm so surprised about two years that weren't mentioned. 1993 and 1994. For me and for most people they had films that were iconic. Just picking 5 for each year I would go with:
1993: 1. Jurassic park. 2. Schindler's list. 3. The Fugitive. 4. Groundhog day. 5. Cool runnings (personal choice)
1994: 1. Pulp fiction. 2. Forrest Gump. 3. The Lion king. 4. The Shawshank Redemption. 5. The Crow (Brandon Lee's last performance)

The Grey is definitely the best film of Neeson.
It's a very personal (Neeson lost his wife, just like his character), raw and uncompromising film. It was surprising to see Hollywood churn it out. It's definitely not a product and a cheap/safe/escapist thrill ride.
I watched it in cinema and it really hit people. Frank Grillo's last scene alone is remarkable.
When the titles started rolling there was silence... Most left with their popcorn untouched.
I went it expecting to see man-vs-nature kind of thriller where the humans do MacGyver shit in Alaska. Instead it was a study of human nature and what it means to be a man. Yeah, it's a very "male" film.

Here's my 2 cents on them using Scott Lang:
Scott Lang is as interesting as Hank Pym. However, they've already made Iron-Man and Hank Pym is similar to him in many ways. Brilliant scientist invents this new technology and he's a little arrogant. Scott Lang gives an opportunity for a different narrative, a misguided man that is led towards being a hero. A man who is motivated by his love for his daughter. Hank Pym...well...he slapped his wife once and then he created Ultron. Since we already have Iron Man and it makes as much sense (if not more if you think about it) that Tony Stark built Ultron, I'm fine with them using Scott Lang, even more because Hank Pym is still there in some capacity.

i really enjoyed the episode but this might have been one of the weaker ones so far. the only reason i say that is because of all the discussion on what the questions really mean. clearly you are all preparing before the episode but then when you are answering the question, the meaning of the question becomes part of the discussion. it might be worth taking a little bit of time before everyone does their research to address any questions the panel might have about how to answer each question.
but, like i mentioned before, the only reason i'm bothering to write any of this is because i really enjoy the show and only want to see it get better. thanks as always for the videos!

    My favorite movie fighters are:
    1) Dan Murrel (He always makes the best arguments and is the most competent)
    2) Spencer Gilbert (Also competent and quite funny)
    3) Mark Ellis (Just funny as hell)
    So bring them more often!
I think this show should more often have a female fighter. There were too less women on Movie Fights. I can only remember Alison Haislip, but I think there were also others, but not many. (Maybe you can find a blond girl to join the show… that would be nice)
What do the other screen junkies fans think about my ranking? Any other opinion?

George Lucas. People usually say he got bad with the prequels, as if he was great once but lost his way. But he was never great to begin with imo. He didn't direct Empire Strikes Back and that's why it's the best one. He didn't direct Return of the Jedi, which has the best and most emotional moment in the franchise imo (Darth Vader, Luke and the Emperor's final scene together). He directed Howard the Duck. He's done more bad movies than good ones and even the ones that are generally considered good like Episode IV do not show some great directing talent imo. He's bad at directing actors, focuses much more on imagery than emotions or depth and I can't stand how he paces his movies.
Old George Lucas is the most oveerrated director I can think of.
I dislike how he's remembered as one of the great DIRECTORS for creating the Star Wars legacy. He's the creator of something people find great, not a great director.

You guys were all wrong, the best TV show to see in imax is Firefly. Not only is it one of the best shows ever made (r.i.p.) it's so beautiful to watch. It's very thematic in the way it's filmed but I think imax would open up that world even more and really drive home that whole universe. Plus seeing the ship, Serenity, on that screen... I think I'd literally cry. Great fight today! Keep it up!

    2014 was really great:
Interstellar (One of my favorite movies),
Captain America 2 (My favorite Marvel Movie)
Guardians Of The Galaxy (My second favorite Marvel Movie)
X-Men: Days Of Future Past (My second favorite X-Men movie)
    Nightcrawler (Very original)
Birdman (Also very original and well acted)
    Whiplash (Top notch performances)
Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes (Outstanding performance by Serkis and great pacing)
Boyhood (Something different that was executed well)
The Battle Of Five Armies (Hate it all you want, I thought it was a great ending for a trilogy)
And some other titles, there were a lot of bad movies too, but lets focus on the good stuff.
For me, the best year for movies is either 1994 (Shawshank, Pulp Fiction, Forrest Gump, Lion King) or 1980 (Empire Strikes Back, The Shinging, Airplane!, Raging Bull)

Type? Horror. Since he did both Dead Alive (or Braindead) and LOTR's, it's only natural he could breath much needed life into one franchise: Friday the 13th. Hand's down he'd probably make the Dark Knight of 80's slasher reboots.

Besides, the way it starts with a genesis story is probably not going to make it into an American movie anyway. I think they'll do Unfinished Tales and the sequel book that Chris Tolkien has been writing if anything. But if it involves Hobbit feet, I doubt Peter Jackson will do it!!

DeepSpaceNinja I'm with the Ninja from deep space here. None of these even ring a bell, except for Wizard of Oz because I saw a few clips from it. Call us spoiled brats all you want, but you also need to account that production values from that time are so pathetic they don't stand up the test of time. Wizard of Oz looks like a freaking high school play with cardboard backgrounds. I was born 50 years too late for this stuff to be relevant.
It's just too far gone in the past. Plenty of so called classics of Cinema are unbearable for me. They just sound and look like shit. I'd rather read a book called Wizard of Oz than watch the movie. Books as a medium of entertainment don't evolve. It's just words on a page. Doesn't matter if the page is paper or a computer monitor, even if I prefer paper. But movies? If I was able to travel back in time with the proper equipment to show the people from 1939 Peter's Jackson's LOTR movies, it would blow their minds so hard some of them would probably straight up die of amazement.

28:47 what is the problem with John Carter? It is extremely good movie. For decades filmmakers were borrowing from Burroughs and his amazing universe and this is the first movie that does justice to the whole Barsoom series. And in that movie, he plays John Carter really well, he is smart, calculating, intricate, yes, the movie focuses on his first visit of Barsoom, as does A Princess of Mars, which only further shows, how good an interpretation this is, but it was in 1866, of course he was confused and he managed very well and just think back on his time on earth, how he played everyone, fought against uneven odds, you felt desperate with him and hopeful and the climax at the very end, when you went from victory, to despair and finally back to victory in a matter of minutes. I think it was an amazing movie and one that showed his talent.

Yes, the whole marketing process was terrible. But I don´t think it has damaged the movie. It has perhaps reduced the number of people interested and perhaps some people who were expecting some barbar conan with superpowers nonsense were disappointed, but for the majority, the movie turned out way, way better than what the marketing promised.
