"Nema slučajnosti", said my Croatian language teacher when I told her that the day I was planning to arrive in Switzerland via night train would be the same day the Uni Boys would play their first and only show in Switzerland on their summer tour..."there are no coincidences", she translated to me. We were quite literally crossing each others' tracks. I would be in the right place at the right time, so I said I must stay a night in Switzerland to see the boys before heading to Paris.
The venue used to be a prison. About 2 kilometers outside of central Lucerne, it is already a bit rural, with cows and a couple of small farms and shared gardens around this interesting building atop a hill. Why anyone would feel inclined to commit a felony in a country as civilized as Switzerland is beyond me. Maybe because everyone is so quick to tell you what you are doing wrong all the time, that no one could possibly be allowed to do something worthy of being locked up. Perhaps that's why it now a venue. The owner said that the lease is free from the city. I guess Lucerne wants to make sure the artist crowd gets a place to express themselves. In LA, the city is more likely to throw you in an actual prison for trying to play your music.
The crowd wasn't huge, but they were interested. Please note that in the song "Up to You" that Noah sings the lyrics "It's prison time"...while playing in a prison. Michael was incredibly playful. Goofing around and doing his best Paul Simonon impression right to me standing in the front row. So entertaining. The beer was good, the people were nice, there was chocolate backstage, and it was a good gig. The day before I left, over 2 years ago, I saw the Uni Boys in Dana Point, then I rode off into the sunset the next day on the motorbike. And now here we all were, "2 years away from you" and in CH of all places. On Your Lovin Mind hit hardest for me... That song really started to slap for me about a year ago. Glad to finally hear it.
Anyways, I hope you enjoy another good old bootleg of the Uni Boys, with quite a personal travel story behind it. Hoping for many more of theres in the future. Hope to see them in 2025 back in California.
