► Still Wakes the Deep Story Synopsis
STILL WAKES THE DEEP is a return to the first-person narrative horror genre for The Chinese Room, creator of critically acclaimed games such as Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs, Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture, and Dear Esther.
You are an offshore oil rig worker, fighting for your life through a vicious storm, perilous surroundings, and the dark, freezing North Sea waters. All lines of communication have been severed. All exits are gone. All that remains is to face the unknowable horror that’s come aboard.

The greatest thing about this game is that you feel so much for people that you have (in game) one or two conversations with. The acting is just THAT good.

I think the story was pretty simple and basic but the voice actors really managed to elevate the script! I probably wouldn’t have care that much about what happened to Caz and the whole crew if it wasn’t for the performance of the whole cast.

The thing with the notes between Brodie and Finlay is Finlay probably arguing back and forth with Brodie about what they should do. Finlay thinks they should destroy the rig and the creature. Brodie kept wanting to keep the rig from going under in hopes that someone would save them. Finlay kept giving Brodie chances to keep the rig afloat etc, but after Brodie dies, all bets are off.

Nothing like a classic cosmic bodily horror where it's so big and awful, the only choice is for humanity to try and defy it as best the can. Also nice to see a different type of Scottish representation that isn't played up as a stereotype of somekind. Thanks for being brave and exploring this!

Really enjoyed it a lot and as a linear horror story I think it's super well made, with great VAs and both horrific and gorgeous visuals.
Horror doesn't necessarily mean scary and can take many different forms, disturbing, gore, psychological, extremely tense etc so I think it fits in the genre. Even if not that scary there were some good tense moments and globally the atmosphere was pretty dark and psychologically heavy.
Thanks for the playthrough, it was awesome :)

Thanks! 🙏 I really enjoyed this, especially Caz. For such a short game, I felt like we got to know him quite well. Acting was top notch.

The game was definitely on the linear side. Even moments where you had a bit more freedom as to how to aproach it, like when hiding from the monsters roaming around, you pretty much got told where to go. Maybe the yellow paint did detract from the experience in those situations? Like, if the hiding spots were harder to find and you had to do some blind runs to areas where you think you remember seeing some hiding nook or whatever maybe those moments would've been more scary.
Idk, in any case, I really enjoyed this. The voice acting was great and the setting was pretty cool.

A small interestIng tidbit is that this game was localized into 博多弁 for the Japanese version which is a very interesting deviation from the usual options. It's caused a minor splash among Japanese players, but I love that the localizers managed to get a similar feeling across.

Google tells me that's a dialect from Fukuoka. Does it have similar cultural connotations to a mainstream Japanese audience that Scots does to English and American audiences?

    • @yaobikuni1349
      @yaobikuni1349 26 วันที่ผ่านมา

@@Chetverikov Honestly, that is a bit hard for me to say as there are quite a few dialects that are just as strong as unique. For example, 東北弁 is frequently used in media to depict people who are very rural and thus the accent has a very strong “hick” or “rube” impression. There are quite a number of other non-standard dialects like 関西弁 or 土佐弁 that have seen popularity and familiarity increase, the former most especially, so they have become less “exotic” as a result. With all those considerations, I do think 博多弁 was a pretty inspired choice as all the Japanese LPers I have seen have both been impressed, befuddled and ultimately satisfied with the choice.

You are *so* ready for Silent Hill.
Lol But seriously, you pointing out how the game didn't really scare is a good reminder that horror as a genre is super flexible; it's either existential, psychological, ecological, external/internal, or just plain straight body horror. I quite liked this; the acting and natural writing really sold on the emotional beats. We don't really know these characters for long, and they're mundane, regular workers, which makes them dying even more tragic; their lives are thrown to the wayside when the big cheese in charge is the first one who tries to escape. Empathy itself really enhances the horror; if you don't care about the characters then there's no tension when they start dropping like flies.
I think this is The Chinese Room's best game yet. Short and (bitter)sweet.

A solid horror out of nowhere. Setting, characters, horrifyingly majectic sights and most of all voiceovers are just /mwah/
Welonz, thanks for the effort. Don't know how you juggle Hades, MGS2 and have time for side projects in addition to working, but it was definitely a treat.

TIL watching Welonz play this game. She will leave you to be savaged by monsters to look at a tv with a test graphic on it rather than go to the door to try to help.
She will also stab you with a screwdriver if you look even a little monstery.

Loved the look of the game and the fact they mined real workplace posters, etc. it really added to the atmosphere of the game.
Having said that, were I playing this I might have felt let down from the game play perspective due to lack of any real options. Seemed more like an interactive movie and you just progressed to the next scene.
Well acted and I could def see this as a horror movie.

This was a good LP (as usual with Welonz exploring narrative games), and I agree that it wasn't scary with purpose for gamers to learn full story. It was beautiful writing, Caz's tragedy will leave long impression in memory. I guess, the main downside (at least to me) is that the game can be played only once, otherwise you already know the plot and you hardly want to soak in depressing atmoshere again. I hate the term "walking simulator", but for the lack of better words will use it here and say that in comparison with other WS Still Wakes the Deep lacks exactly the replaybility factor. For example, I love from time to time revisit What Remains of Edith Finch, Gone Home, Firewatch and some other WS games because each time you discover tiny new things or re-think previous walkthrough in a slightly different way. But SWTD is too linear and strict with its exploration (you can't really go too far from your path in particular segment of the story), so replaying it would be too tedious to enjoy it. But it just a minor disadvantage, overall a very good game and I was glad to witness it on my favourite youtuber's channel!
I was pleasantly surprised when saw in the credits that Roy was voiced by Shaun Dooley (I knew that Roy's voice was familiar, but I couldn't placed it correctly before). He is a good British character actor whom I've seen in so many films, series and TV movies: Red Riding Trilogy (great, absolutely loved it), The Game (with Tom Hughes as main actor), It's a Sin, The Witcher, and more recently in wonderful and eye-opening mini-series Mr Bates vs The Post Office, and in the episode of Black Mirror ("Demon 79").

Unscathed? He nearly died from hypothermia. Besides the whole “it was all in his head” is such a bullshit story trope that’s been way over done. Nah. This happened. And he died sacrificing himself to save his girls. Not bashing you, just expressing my disdain for that particularly overdone form of storytelling

Did you guys hear, Pewds might be playing Minecraft again. If that can happen, what are the chances of seeing new Minecraft tips from Welonz??
For real though, I really enjoyed this game and the whole atmosphere. I hadn't seen any The Chinese Room games before but after seeing this I have faith they'll do well with Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2.
Aaand If you haven't already watched the movie yet, John Carpenter's The Thing (1982) is iconic and gives off similar the vibes to this game. Underwater (2020) is a good ocean horror movie as well but more akin to Dead Space (but underwater) lol. Gunner Wright, the voice of Isaac Clarke, was actually in it. Just go in completely blind if you're gonna watch it.
