I used to spend time alone in the woods. Drank from springs I knew were clean. Several years later I went back for a day trip. Drank from the same spring I used to drink from as a kid. Got giardia. Nothing is guaranteed.

If it's from a clear lake and I can't get a fire going, I'll life straw it. But I'll never drink it straight from source untreated.

@@emcoop8552 Likely the muskrat he ate had parasites in it since he started getting sick and weak only 2 hrs after eating it. The show even showed Ray catching a fish and showing it's gall bladder being filled with parasitic worms, so the producers heavily believed it was parasites in the animal that made Donny sick.
I'm actually glad the show addressed it because too many wilderness shows skip the dangers of parasites in animals and makes it look too much like every catch/kill is always clean and safe to eat.

I definitely saw some pink/red in that meat after he cooked it. Either char it completely thru or like others have said, boil it first. Guy built a killer shelter though.
Oh yeah. Pretty sure he got owned cause he didn't cook that meat properly. I reckon he would have stayed out there just as long as everyone else did.
Oh my GOD no no no no no.... the pink you saw was from the smoke, it occurs when nitric oxide from combustion absorbs into the myoglobin in the meat... the same phenomenon responsible for a "smoke ring" in barbecue... if anything was wrong with the food at all, it was the wood he cooked it with releasing too many carcinogens into the meat - I don't think thats the case, I'm about 90% sure it was from his lack of food combined with the heart medication he was taking - you're not supposed to take it without food, which he was forced to do, that's also what Donny himself assumed to be the problem, and I assume he knows his body as well as anybody does.

It wasn't the meat. He was sick before launch. He says he had a gastronomical issue he'd been dealing with and thought he had overcome it.

you've got about a month of foraging season, after the 2 weeks needed to get going well with the nets and trap, before bad weather forces you to just hole up for the winter. So you've got to harvest at LEAST 300,000 calories in that time, in order to have a shot at lasting 100 days. When there's no seals, whales, walrus or narwhales, your best shot at this is via making lots of net weirs for fish and waterfowl, setting baited treblehooks for predators, baited snares and baited, netting-wrapped "boxtraps" for rabbits and small birds, and baited junglewhips for big game.

@@jasielavina8286 if you don't catch fish. Your doing somthing wrong and need to put more effort into ur fishing tactics. (Fish traps) or better fishing spot. Or better bait. Whole bunch of stuff you can do. You could bait water with bugs on waters edges and spear fish when they come up close to grab the bait. (With wooden spear) efficiency pays off and smart primitive techniques do too. At night time if you put fire near the waters edge it attracts the fish to the fire. Just like shiny fish hook but in this case the shiny object is the fire.

If u can’t defend yourself against a parasite that doesn’t make you weak
you dont need the ferrorod, cookpot, sleeping bag, gillnet or paracord. That's 5 picks that can be substiuted for by things made on on site, The saw edged shovel and modified crunch can do MORE than the belt knife, axe and saw, and save yet another pick. This lets you take the gorp, the salt, the 12x12 tarp, the rope hammock, the duct tape, the e tool, the multitool, the slingbow, the fishing kit and the snarewire.
Yeah, having multi-functional tools is very useful and saves space for other things, but it's also a double-edged sword. Take for example a folding shovel that also works as a saw and an axe. If it breaks, you have now lost THREE of your tools, instead of just one.
