  • John from www.growingyourgreens.com/ takes you on a field trip to a backyard fig orchard in Las Vegas, Nevada that is growing a wide variety of fig trees.
You will learn all about growing figs, how they can be planted close, how easy they can be to propagate, some super rare varieties, and how you can grow, propagate and eat the fresh figs that have been used in traditional cultures for thousands of years.
First, you will learn how you can grow fig trees in a 5-gallon bucket that is a self-watering container. You will learn more about the easy annual and perennial vegetables that are being grown in the back yard.
You will discover more about water filteration, as well as about other berries and fruits that can be grown in the Mohave desert of las vegas. You will learn which citrus fruit trees & stone fruits that grow best in this extreme climate.
You will learn how a banana grows outdoors in Las Vegas, you will learn how to properly plant a fig tree and water the fig trees for maximum growth and production.
You will learn why you will not want to fertilize your fig trees too much unless you want more vegetative growth instead of fruits.
You will discover the best variety of fig to grow in Las Vegas as well as colder climates. You will learn more about some of the really rare varieties of figs that are being grown, and how you can make money from growing figs by selling these rare varieties online.
You will learn how to protect your fruits against birds and rats. You will learn about a special protective covering that can be made from a water bottle to protect your fruit as standard net bags are not rat proof.
You will learn if you should grow grapes in the desert. You will learn why you should not go to your local nursery to buy your fig trees as you may not get the right cultivar that will grow best in your climate.
Finally, John will interview Britt, the gardener that is growing vegetables and figs in his spare time to grow figs, fig cuttings, vegetables, and fruits.
Britt will share his passion for growing figs, food and relaxing in the garden. You will discover if figs are really vegan or not, and so much more.
After watching this episode, you will learn all about the cultivation of figs in small spaces, the best fig varieties to grow in the desert, how to plant them, how to water them, how to propagate them, and much much more.

I stopped trying to make clones via cutting.
Now I cut a plastic pot to fit around the branch, sew it back together and then fill it with dirt.
It grows the same as it would through out the year but after fruit is obtained you simply cut that section and you already have a healthy root bulb ready to go.

I’ve seen this self watering system with trees in the ground and didn’t like the method but this in planters is a great idea no more flooding ruts in pots and saves time on watering and precious water Great video!

Last year in February 2019, I bought a fig tree plant online! When i got it, it was just a small very small pin size piece of green growing. I left it on the kitchen table until May, potted it. Oh my Gosh! it is huge now, I put it in a 30 gallon breathable grow pot! Moved it inside for the winter, moved it back out In late April or early may of this year!! This fig tree is huge now! I did not expect it!! It is a Violet De Bordeaux Negronne Fig. I really hope they come in! I grew up with a fig tree, that was huge, the one thing i remember is wasp loved them, and the tree got really, really big. My parents would have to cut it back a lot! I wish i could show photo's im so proud of it! I priced figs in the grocery store (Publix), they are expensive, so , I pray that they fig comes in in August!

I'm in Zone 7B - planted 2 Chicago Hardy's last year and they took off in their 3 gallon pots!
Ended up taking 8 cuttings throughout the year and now have 10 established, potted figs...
Leave in pots or drop in the ground? Maybe split half and half and see how they do? I worry about winter die-back, but also don't really want to move a 100+lb pot every Fall!

John, in a small yard like this, with the house and fences, how do his fig trees get enough sun to be productive? Plus all the plants are so close together.
    I'm in North Texas.
I have just bought my first fig tree. Should I plant it close to our south brick wall for warmth and sunshine, or in our back patio area which gets about 5 hours of sun and is easier to tend more closely, and closer to our water faucet?

Could you direct me to more information on the big blue KDF filter and why it saves money? I have a brother in a vocational program, and he needs a filter for water hose as they are adding water to a koi pond and aquaponics system, and are having issues with getting pH balanced, lime in the water, and string algae. He is in central Florida.

You never talk about how to keep a young fig tree alive through summer and winter... do you put them under the shade when young when the weather is 100+ degrees? What kind of soil to use? and why? What type of fertilizer? How often? How much? You seem to just ramble about plants and not a lot about how we can be successfully grow one...

Did he ever try to put fresh oil in the garden see if it prevents Jerry 🐭 from eating figs, I saw jerry 🐭 crazy about oil and crave for it, maybe when the oil present he will leave figs alone? I’m not sure about this method yet because I don’t have a fig tree to do this experiment with, but I saw the way jerry 🐭 crave for oil so maybe it will work?

Sadly rodents are a daily battle. I have to set the traps each night and pick them up in the morning so my dogs don’t get hurt. I’d prefer to let the hawks and owls (nature) deal with them but when the rodents dig their holes/nests close to the fruit it’s hard for their predators to get them.
