great to hear Joel touch on some of the first & second gen SD pioneers of shaping, and production. I met Donald, Velzey's "protege", around 79-80 down at the beach, and wound up hanging around and surfing with him and his factory crew from time to time. that old "factory" up on tremont st in O'side. Donald's bay was just inside the front across from his office, with Art Collier (now shaping boards and wind boards in Oregon) in another room doing shortboards, and Hank Byzak in the next one powering out longboards. Along with World Champ Dale Dobson, Teddy Gomez, Les Potts (back on Maui), and others as well. What a great ambassodor Donald was; we lost him too soon. Still getting my boards from Hank, down in the valley in O'side. And talking about Tony Channin and his factory up on the hill with guys like Brimo, Perico, Tracy, etc, and later Kevin; all under the watchful eye of Randy Wong. Tony sold to the Bing guys, and they're in there now, next to Bahne's operation, and the Ding King, with Jim Phillips still shaping around the corner. All those OG guys (Donald, Tony, Bahne, Grubby Clark, Velzey, Hansen, etc.) were always squabbling over deals and imagined slights and moneys owed... best friends one week, enemies the next; and then best buddies again... good times! That would be a fun subject for Joel to expand on... And It's good to see a lot of the younger guys like Ryan and Derek keeping the "hand shaped" boards alive. Shout out to Devon Howard, a nice guy, for sure... See ya in the water!
Joel has some good points. He's been blessed to have the support of Vans over the years, yet I think they should of had his back against the wsl. The wsl needs vans more then vans needs the wsl.
Very few people relate and comprehend the story Joel talks, it's a new world out there. Would love to hear an interviewer Ino offense) with Joel who knows the whole scene ask some real pokey questions.
Good on you Joel. Standing up for longboarding, thats where surfing has it's roots. It's ironic that the first surfers we're longboarders and yet we get looked at as second class citizens. It's a shame that surfing like so many things has gone after the almighty dollar.

The other guy threw the first punch? This guy's dad, Joseph Tudor, along with Lance Hookano, were both convicted of FELONY ASSAULT and BATTERY. The victim had a concussion, a DISLOCATED SHOULDER, and cuts that required stitches. My own shoulder was dislocated in a surfing accident and if someone had deliberately done that to me I would sue, and so would anyone else.

legend I gave up on the Surf industry in 2007 when cell phones were getting popular I release my last independent surf movie nobody’s hero’s it was bootleg in Brazil. They did like 50,000 units. I never saw a penny it should’ve came out six months before campaign but my computer crashed so I had to re-edit it or it would’ve been the most influential movie in 2006 I still think it is my channel. It’s been locked for 16 years I just unlocked it if I get 10 K subscribers all open my vault surf skate snow, Moto music, skim boarding.
It’s more refreshing than “like” every three seconds….much better…I’ll take it! And the WSL can suck it…money grubbing comp mongers! People surf because it’s PURE. It’s ROYAL. When you are out there…you are representing Hawaiian tradition at its best…why did they do it? For pure joy…THATS ALL….remember that when you paddle out…respect, help, kokua..be humble….it’s not about INDUSTRY…well, it IS…if you’re making a living out of it…but that’s not what it’s about…no one should be making money from it…that changes the whole mind set- All these conversations, concerns and talks about something that was just supposed to be FUN…just FUN..Aloha🤙🏝❤️
The best thing that could happen to pro surfing is if the Oprah-lead WSL folded. It's turned into a made for tv movie. Surfing should return to its early rebellious roots and go back to small, fun, local comps and minimal money. It would be a breath of fresh air compared to the glitz and glam, dog and pony show the WSL is trying to turn it into now. As popular as it is, surfing will never be a mainstream sport and will never have high Neilson ratings.
