      Great tip! I actually was using up some leftover conditioner (from Paul Mitchell) and it was yellow. Such a strange color, yet I didn't think twice about it. Funny enough, this morning I felt like some of my silver strands looked a little yellowish. Eek! Glad I tossed the rest.

    So Glad I found your video today! Very informative. I just started my gray hair journey January 1 and so thankful I did especially now with Solons closed due to virus epidemic. I had been wondering when I should start using the purple shampoo and conditioner and after watching your video I will definitely start using it. Your hair looks great and love the cut. I have a medium bob but I’m considering cutting it shorter to get rid of my old color sooner.

    Great job and fabulous info. Spot on and I couldn’t agree with your choices more. Both are my faves as well. A bit of a difference back story…..My genetics decided for me and thank the heavens that I have great hair genes. My Irish Daddy (I just lost him last year) had started going salt n pepper when he was 20 and my Mother who was blonde started to “transition” from Blonde to Platinum in her 20’s as well. Daddy’s air was WHITE. That Kenny Rogers Platinum White, Beard and all! With my Mother having great hair genes as well, I was blessed as I went from Ginger to my first WHITE (not grey, not a lick of grey) at 17. THAT was a little young,,,,,,I thought. With a Chemistry background as a Nurse I thought hmmmmm, let’s RESEARCH (It’s addictive and I can absolutely relate!) and wow, did I throw myself into this. One portion of my “Rules of Research” was to NOT listen or follow anyone who said they had “great results with…..” if they were under 25 as I just could not relate to what they could know when the next video I saw they were blue or green or all of the above! So I did tend to follow some of the beautiful ladies that I am confident could wipe the board with me in Chem! They ran through every brand, additive (both good and bad) and they also did the WHY of certain chemicals and hair types with friends that were on their journey with her. She is a beautiful and lovely woman with grace and class and an attitude of embracing your journey. To her, it is just hair and it will grow back! A great attitude and a fabulous hat collection! LOL!
    Unfortunately, as a Nurse Practitioner (retired) I did not have that luxury. With working in 3rd world countries and having to be vaccinated and drink water from some sketchy places, at some point I found myself incredibly ill and with metal poisoning. MANY tests and a TON of Doctors overseas where they are miles ahead of us in treatment and nothing is “inside” the box, all thinking and research is outside of the box thinking, had me on a path to health again fairly quickly by medical standards, however…..NO MORE CHEMICALS ……as in, my beloved GINGER HAIR DYE. Cold Turkey. I think more….Red Panda? White stripe and Red outgrowth. I had offers from strangers to cut my hair for free LOL, I was quite a sight I am sure! But…..I got there….thanks to PURPLE and in some cases (look at the color wheel ladies, it will be your best friend) BLUE to tone out brassiness. Purple takes out yellow and Blue takes out Redish/Orange. Wow! Grade 3 Flashback as I was never an artist!
    After many years of crazy cuts and styles (a word I will use gently LOL!) I got there!
    I learned that Hair really and truly IS JUST HAIR and it actually WILL grow back!!! Who knew?!
    I learned that the ONLY opinion that counts is MINE unless I asked you for yours.
    I learned that time IS a gift and a valuable one.
    I learned that now my hair is PLATINUM and I mean PLATINUM WHITE, I am saving a fortune over all those women paying a ton of money to destroy their hair by bleaching it and making it what I would call “old lady bingo grey” or attempting to go to Platinum and ultimately destroying their hair (But it WILL grow back!).
    I learned that the best Q & A I have ever had was when a beautiful young woman asked me (with wholehearted enthusiasm and sincerity) “WHO does your hair? It is just stunning!!???” And remember this is after about 10 years of research, sampling, testing, etc etc etc, the best answer EVER was when my BFF turned to her and said “G-d”. Her reply was to whip out her phone and try to google it and asked what street “it” was on etc. I never laughed so hard until she FINALLY “got it” and said “I’m so sorry!” To which I replied “Don’t be honey, It’s just hair and I am not sorry at all!! Just remember to embrace the journey and use GOOD PRODUCTS!”.
    So, to you my new found YTuber, I say thank you for sharing what you did and how you got there and your tips and brands (100% spot on!!!) even though I am completely Platinum now and I do love it but no more expensive trips to the salon unless it is for a trim.
    A side note, I did accidentally find a brand called SHRINE DROPS (yes that’s the correct spelling) and it is from the Netherlands I believe and they make a 40 ml dropper bottle full of the blackest Pigment of Purple you have ever seen and all you do is add a drop or two depending on your current hair colorr or where u are trying to get to and it immediately removes any brassiness. You can use ANY conditioner you like (this saves on having to buy two types of conditioner as the color only goes into the conditioner at the level you want/need. So just a clear conditioner and a clear shampoo. Nothing goes into the shampoo. And you can just start strand testing from there to see how many drops, how much conditioner and how long it stays on your hair and voila, you are more perfect then now!!! It is cheap but good ingredients and you are using YOUR choice of good conditioner with your friends only slogging 1-2 bottles to the island for you as the wee 20-40ml comes in the mail very quickly and a 40ml bottle with last you a year, I am confident. Research it up!!! 😉👍🏻! It is called “SHRINE DROP IT HAIR TONER” and I get the one called WHITE but they do have every color under the sun. My GF tried the Champagne Blonde and it looked incredibly classy on her but that is who she is, fabulous. You can mix and match so you could get White AND Champagne if you wanted something different for a holiday. It’s all very personal and saves on luggage allowances LOL!
    Good luck and enjoy that journey and thank you for sharing your research as you are truly helping women feel beautiful in their natural color as they mature yet continue their rightful path to beauty. You are a hero to so many that may not have they nerve or strength so to draw from you is a beautiful gift. ♥️

    Hi, I'm from the UK. I also use purple shampoo 😁. But my hairdresser told me to put it on wet hair. Not too wet. I leave it on for 20-30 mins. Rinse it out then shampoo and conditioner. It's fab. I was you colour hair. Now I have white hair at the crown of my hair salt and pepper grey at the bottom, and a mixture at the front. I'm 55years old ,and I love it. I have it in a pixie cut now. But just waiting for our hairdressers to open.🧓xxxx

    Thanks for a great explanatory video and recommendations! Love your hair! Am confused and lost about what to use and what to avoid. My natural hair colour is jet black. So black, it had a blue tent. People have always asked me what colour brand am using. My answer was, am born with it. I started having few grey hairs at my late 20's. I started colouring my hair black in my early 30's. Now that am approaching my 40's not sure how much of my hair is natural black. I completely stopped diying my hair 6 months ago! Didn't want to lose any length. I have tons of healthy strong hair. At the beginning I thought all of it will go grey. But most of the growth was silver and not as much as I expected. Been advised to stay away from toners as it might turn my hair brassy. I didn't even know what that means. I hated the contrast between the silver roots and the rest of the hair length. A colleague suggested using head & shoulders shampoo. Cause its really good for lifting colour, without damage. I guess it worked. Not in a nice way though. Now I have patches of faded black. Kinda brown with orange tone. Lots of the silver is turning dirty yellow. Is that what brassy means? Am not sure if it's the H&D shampoo. Or is it the time factor?! So I thought I'll have 2 tone of colour. I have something like 4. I do look like my cat! Certainly not as cute😭😭. Not sure if the purple shampoo will work for me. Definitely worth a try. Would love to see an update on your transition:D

    • @theadventuresofislandgirl7898
      @theadventuresofislandgirl7898  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The yellowing is what the purple shampoo or conditioner can help with, but I think in a preventive manner rather than to fix it after the fact. I've found that once the hair turns yellow, it is difficult to eliminate. I just cut a bunch of my ends off because they turned yellow after too much UV exposure on a beach vacation a few months earlier. Personally, I'd stay away from Head and Shoulders (or any other harsh hair products), and stick to the better quality products. If for no other reason than to be kind to your hair.
      Everyone's hair journey is different, and multiple colors are the norm during a transition. At one point, I felt like a calico cat myself. I'm working on an update video, as I'm now fully transitioned. Now that we're all quarantined, I should have more time to tackle that project. :) Good luck with your transition!

    • @helensharmony7331
      @helensharmony7331 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have to agree. I used to dye my hair black and whenever I would use H&D shampoo it would turn kid of orange. That’s what is referred to brassy. So if you want to go gray unfortunately it seems you have to go through an ugly phase. When you stop coloring your hair after a while it begins to “discolor’. Turns brassy. Then you will able to see what looks like highlights, but it’s actually your white and silver hair under the color peeking through. So if you were a dusty blonde it would be easier to transition to gray because there would be less of a contrast. I decided to stop coloring my hair. I don’t want o bleach or cut any length so I started using H&S shampoo followed by Tresemme Purple Blonde Conditioner. It leaves my hair super soft and shiny. My hair was Brown black # 20 from Colorsilk. It is now a lovely brown with highlights which are my grays peeking through. I’ve only just started this but it’s working. I’ve skipped coloring for the last to months. I can’t wait to go salt and pepper. It’s gonna be a long journey. Proverbs 16:31
      Gray hair is a crown of glory;
      it is gained in a righteous life

    I enjoyed your take on purple shampoos. I'm about 8 months into my grow out, and my natural hair is bright white. I get lots of compliments and I really like it. My style is a chin length layered bob, and I have heavy blond highlights and a little bit of medium brown hair to grow out yet. However, a few weeks ago I had a keratin treatment. I've had several before, and I love them, but this is the first on my natural hair, and yes, I had yellowing for the first time. I discovered the Pravana purple shampoo as well, and it has helped the most to bring back the bright white. I especially needed one that is sulphate free because of the keratin. Recently I tried putting it on dry hair, and leaving it on for about 15-20 minutes before showering, and this gave me the brightest color I have had since the keratin treatment. I haven't tried the Pravana mask yet, so thanks for that suggestion.
    Your hair looks wonderful, and will be a great salt and pepper look when you are fully transitioned.

      @theadventuresofislandgirl7898  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for your comment! I absolutely love the Pravana mask (more than the shampoo, even). I am a huge proponent of sulfate-free hair products. Glad the Pravana helped get rid of the yellow. If my hair were longer, I'd probably consider a keratin treatment. I was an early adopter of the Brazilian blowout (I had my first one in China way back in '07, although I think it was called something else at the time). I have naturally frizzy hair, although now that I've stopped coloring I think my hair is much healthier (e.g. less frizzy). Guess I'll find out if I ever grow it longer again. :)

    I have long, curly grey/silver/white hair, and my favourite violet shampoo and conditioner is Light Blue Shade, which is readily available in Canada. It's got a really light, pleasant fragrance (which is super-important to me, as I'm very sensitive to perfumes) and is very moisturizing (which is surprising, given that the shampoo isn't SLS-free,). It's also super-affordable and can be bought online or at a drug store for between $8-$12 for 450ml. Only drawback is that if you're vegan, the conditioner will be a no-go, as it contains silk protein. Also, if you manage to find it online in the U.S., it's like twice the price (which still isn't bad).

But one out of four is okay because I loved the advice you gave in this video. I noticed you haven't shown us your hair since Jan. 2019, so have you completed the transition to gray? Would love to see your hair now. I noticed that Pravana The Perfect Blonde has changed their formula and bottle (from the one you showed in the video) and a lot of people said it turns their hands purple now. Are you still using Pravana? Thanks for all your great advice. Cheers.

      Thanks for your comment. My video is right up there with Easter church services and foreign language videos. That is pretty funny! About the Pravana product...I only used the older version that I referenced in the video, so I don't know about a new version. I will say that the Pravana masque definitely stained my hands and cuticles with a purple tint. I only stopped using the Pravana because I moved overseas and didn't have room in my luggage for the big bottles, so I left them with a blonde friend. :)

    Hi, I have stopped dying my hair back in March at the beginning of the virus shutdown. I decided to stop coloring my hair because of the damage it has done to my hair and scalp. I always had colored my hair with dark mahagony brown to dark Auburn. I am kind of embracing the gray and reddish highlights no matter what shampoo washes out the hair dye. What else should I be doing to go to the silver route.? Thanks

      @theadventuresofislandgirl7898  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Patience is key. :) Also, avoiding too much UV exposure to the grey hair. I learned the hard way that the gray/white/silver strands turn yellow really quickly with too much sun exposure. Had to cut a few inches off to get rid of some very yellow bits, after a two week beach vacation. I try to always wear a hat now when I'm out in the sun for a prolonged period of time.

    • @theadventuresofislandgirl7898
      @theadventuresofislandgirl7898  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@contessa5434 Blue shampoo (which I've never used) is supposed to be to tone down orange in brunette hair. Purple is to eliminate yellow in blonde/white hair. I'd say purple is the better bet during a transition. At least I had a very good experience with it.

    Kinda late, sorry.
    My hair is natural white and when I wash it with purple shampoo it turns violet. I only leave it on my head as long as a normal shampoo.
    If I leave it on longer will it not become violet??

    • @theadventuresofislandgirl7898
      @theadventuresofislandgirl7898  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for commenting. I think that the longer you leave the purple shampoo on your hair, the higher the chance your hair will take on a violet/lavender hue. That's how it works for me, anyway. So I'd say you might want to skip the purple shampoo altogether, or talk to your stylist about less potent options given your hair type.

      I don't see why not. The purple shampoo will keep the new silver growth bright and likely won't do much (if anything) to the dark brown part.

    Is a purple shampoo a little bit like a coloration? Just need to know if I’m going natural

    • @theadventuresofislandgirl7898
      @theadventuresofislandgirl7898  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, it definitely has some sort of element of coloring to it, because if you use it too often, your hair can take on a lavender hue. That being said, after a few washes with non-purple shampoo, the lavender tone washes away. So it isn't anything permanent, color-wise. But I'm not a professional hair person, this is just my observations. :)

    • @theadventuresofislandgirl7898
      @theadventuresofislandgirl7898  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hmmm...not really sure. What it did to my dyed blondish ends was turn them very ashy. The only way you'll know is if you try. The nice thing about purple shampoo (at least what I've found) is that it washes out after a few shampoos with regular product. So whatever happens likely won't stick around forever. :) Good luck!

    Not sure about purple shampoo, afraid that I will get purple hair! Which would be not so good, because my hair is almost totally gray after 18 months. Wonder if there is something else I can use what makes the color brighter without using purple stuff.

    • @theadventuresofislandgirl7898
      @theadventuresofislandgirl7898  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, too much of a good thing can definitely turn you lavender or purple! I only use the purple products 1 - 2 x a month now. As for other products, my hairdresser just showed me a new Redken product specifically for gray hair. It is called Graydient and the conditioner has more of a steely cast rather than the dark purple of the Blondage product. I haven't tried Graydient yet (as I have two liters of purple shampoo and conditioner...hahaha), but it looked promising. Will give it a go soon and report back. Thanks for the comment, and good luck with your product search. Let me know if you find anything you love. :)

    • @theadventuresofislandgirl7898
      @theadventuresofislandgirl7898  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      UV rays can definitely turn your silvers yellow. I have not started using any sort of UV treatment on my hair. I think I will though, as more of my hair is getting silver/white and I live in the tropics with daily, strong UV exposure. I do use a heat protectant spray when I use a curling iron. I am currently using Hot Toddy from Drybar and like it a lot. There might be some UV protection in there.

    I actually had my hair colored gray because the growing out took too long and the dark hair looked even darker with the outgrowth and I looked pale, old and tired. The overall gray was a much better choice and I think makes me look younger...even though I have gray hair....go figure.
