    One of my favorite things about Rocky’s music is how much more experimental / Alternative it became over time. You could definitely tell that psychedelics had a huge impact on his life.

    So I just started listening to Rocky last week and I’m in the same camp as you. His music is super amazing. Where have I been this whole time? Why haven’t I heard this before. His music is so good and each album just gets better and better. The fact that the both of us first listened to his music after it was released has something to do with our immediate appreciation of it. It’s like the because of the contrast of its style vs what was contemporary at the time it was difficult for people to see how amazing it is, but because we have listened to it after the fact we can appreciate for what it is despite or because of it’s uniqueness. I’m so glad to come across a video that shares my perspective on ASAP Rocky and his incredible music. Thanks for sharing your point of view.

    Time for the d-riding and long winded comment:
    Testing is one of my favorite Rocky albums out in his discography, maybe a little higher than ALLA (not better than live love asap though), anyways. From the ideas presented on the record, even if weren’t hashed out properly to everyone, still made me enjoy the listening experience. The f**king creative direction and the crash dummy concept is phenomenal, especially when it came to the music videos and everyone being a testing dummy to society (or life?), the AWGE editing style was at its highest at the time, and a lot more. Sorry for gushing about this record and its era, love this thing.

    Testing is good album but not a great album or masterpiece. There are a lot of interesting ideas rocky experiments with but most of the concepts are half baked. Regardless the album has probably set the foundation for his next album and the feedback he received from testing is prob why he is taking so long (+ leaks)

  • @krate6579
    @krate6579 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Sorry but you're in the minority for a reason and the fact you only started paying attention to him in 2020 shows you are far behind the real ASAP wave and what popularised Rocky in the first place. Testing is trash and is his least popular album for a reason...
    If you're a hipster and like aesthetics and concepts over good music, Testing is for you. However, the issue is music is about the sound NOT the appearance or what it conveys symbolically. Nobody watches music videos these days and that's fine. People prefer to have their own artistic interpretation of the music and insert themselves as the artist and this is something Rocky did extremely well on his first three albums, particularly his first two. Music is to be vibed to and enjoyed. This album doesn't provide "sonic enjoyment" at all. Instead Rocky wants you to overthink the album (similar with Kendrick with MMATBS) and analyse what he's put together and think he's an innovative genius, when in fact it's just pretentious and mediocre with one classic song. Rocky's overobsession with fashion and design took a massive hit on his music career and this is why he derailed. Testing is a product of Rocky's crippling attention span and lack of decisiveness when making music. He made this album because he lacked a distinct creative identity so just did a mish mash of whatever. On top of that, his rapping skills are at it's worst on this project too.
    Funnily enough - Rocky not only had much better rapping skills on his previous projects - but also, he actually had a better creative identity as well. And his much better beat selection also helped bring those respective identities to life. Why make a video analyzing an album like this when you could deep dive into Long. Live. ASAP? Because Testing fanboys often diss Long. Live. ASAP as being some mainstream sellout album when in fact if you look past the mainstream singles which are just meant to be shallow bangers, it actually has loads of substance. Rocky constantly tackles his issues with fame, haters, and being part of the illuminati throughout the entire album and actually flows well, with fitting solemn/trippy/atmospheric beats. Long Live ASAP (who said you can't live forever lied), Suddenly (suddenly, everything changed before my eyes), Pain (so big you are, shining like a star, with your head in the clouds till somebody shoot you down [haters]), Phoenix (where do we stand, where do we go...it's all part of the plan), LVL (all this talk of illuminati ain't got a clue about me), Ghetto Symphony (riding on my enemies, this my ghetto symphony)...etc. Hell could have some analysis too. ALLA is another continuation of some of Rocky's depressive themes he was tackling on Long Live ASAP, albeit not so much talking about his coming to fame since he already achieved it (but more so reminiscense). Rocky's debut mixtape Live. Love. ASAP is more of a "pretty motherfucker", "swag" trill tape which will be more popular with casuals but it has consistency in theme as Rocky asserts his personality strongly throughout the album and you know who ASAP Rocky is after the album ends. With Testing I have no idea who ASAP Rocky after listening to the album, it sounds like he's trying to be different things and doesn't excel at any of them other than the trap banger Praise the Lord. A lot of these songs end up being mediocre or trash and could have been executed better by an artist that specialises in that type of music. This is why the album failed to have any songs that really generated any sort of cult fanbase anywhere. Moreover, at that point in Rocky's career (2018) we should not be "questioning" who he is. He already introduced us to himself extremely well on his first two projects. Testing is just devolution and just shows that Rocky is a confused trendhopper trying to bite Migos and Tyler the Creator's style when both of their styles aged like shit. Tyler had to switch genres to have any sort of musical popularity, as his Cherry Bomb / Goblin music was mostly forgotten.
    This video has already aged badly too because Rocky never released an album last year either. And won't this year too. You say this album grew on people is delusion because I never see anybody talking about it except obscure videos like this. Go on TikTok and every Rocky fan or non-fan floods their top 5 songs with songs from his first 3 albums and the only Testing songs ever mentioned are (obviously) Praise the Lord, ASAP Forever and Hun43rd. Maybe Purity but that's barely a Rocky song. A few Rocky songs have blown up a bit on TikTok and it's nothing Testing-related. It's usually that 2011-12 stuff, other than Everyday, LPFJ2, etc.
    Rocky showed on this album he's useless unless he's got somebody mentoring him (ASAP Yams) who was responsible for the whole initial ASAP wave in the first place. Rocky can't regenerate his old buzz/hype again, he's strayed too far away from the original movement that popularized him to the point where, most people even by 2018 had forgotten what his 2011-12 self looked like. To be fair, that's with most artists, so it's not an issue.
    I suggest you go back and listen to Live Love ASAP and also songs like Purple Kisses, Max Julien, Freeze and Back to the Future and really digest the sound Rocky has on these songs because it's far superior to these Testing songs. Testing does nothing for the genre.
