Straw houses and elephant statues in the beginning....that's Thailand. Houses in Peking (Beijing) had been roofed with ceramic tiles since the 12th Century, and they do not care much about elephants.....
WRONG. They used actual photographs and layout of Peking of 1900 when they made this film. There were elephants in Paris (see Moulin Rouge and les Miserables) and you call that "Thailand"? LOL!
This movie is not accurate. The commanding officer would not walked with that cowboy swagger. And it leaves out the role of the Japanese who protected the Americans. Japan sent 20,000 troops to rescue everyone, and those little men impressed everyone with how well they fought. The Russian troops screwed up, even forgot to bring their ammunition.
The British got there first. They waded through the muck of the canal and into the Legation Quarter and were greeted by a cheering throng of the besieged, all decked out in their "Sunday best". The Chinese ringing the Legation Quarter fired a few shots, wounding a Belgian woman, and then fled. It was 2:30 p.m on 14 August. The British had not suffered a single casualty all day, except for one man who died of sunstroke.[13] There were only 8,000 Japanese troops. The British were the overall commanders of operations, The Americans numbered 2,500 Yes the facts are wrong.
This is a chopped up and butchered version of the movie. It only totals 100 some minutes, when the full thing is 2.5 hours or roughly half again that long.
people from the time weren't all racist bigots. The european powers didn't even belittle and portrayed Chinese culture as a whole as barbaric, in fact it was the opposite.
