I have a coffee table layout where the train just chases it's tail. It serves no other purpose other than to entertain ME and I love it. Keep up the good work, this old dog is learning some new tricks.
I thought it's for your enjoyment. The love of creating it. No rules, except what you want in creating for your self, If any. May be to share with others, if you so chose to share. Your creation, your rules. I for one am very happy you are sharing you knowledge and your amazing talent. Thank you for sharing.
I'm certainly not trying to indoctrinate anyone. Just having fun. I am only sharing everything because of you Vincent. You were the one who said in the beginning of the 'River Road' build . . . "show and share everything (unquote)" . . . lol. You did! Remember? Cheers ~ Boomer.
I very, very rarely comment on other peoples creations, but your layout and videos are a massive inspiration for me. The detail and skill involved in creating this most realistic layout are second to none. It takes a great amount of skill to pull off a prototypical location and you have done it beautifully. Critics exist in all walks of life, you don’t have to explain yourself, just keep up the great work.
I recently watched # 42 and pretty much agree with most of the comments. I have been modelling for close to 50 years now and have run across these kind of people , most likely they don,t have a layout. Keep up the excellent work .
Hello Boomer I am new to the Langley area moving here from Victoria about 2 years ago and would like to meet like minded modellers and where is the best spots to train watch , I do dioramas now as we live in an apartment, no room lol. thanks
@@richardchalmers2794 Try the 208th overpass in Langley. Try the Milner Grain Elevator at Glover Road and Crush Crescent. Try Fort Langley at Glover Road and Billy Brown Road. Try 1.6 kilometers east of Fort Langley on River Road (past the fort) at the CP/CN junction. Lot's of action around. Cheers.😁
Wait, wait, wait... from day one on this diorama you made it clear that module 'A' was all about the barge slip. Whether the background facilities are in service or not, it's all about the barge slip. That is the first thing you see when you walk into the room, it is the primary focus.
Yes indeed it is. Furthermore, I re-activated the "out-of-service" Warehouse (third building), and the Steel Company which will load onto flats etc. I even added a siding for it that wasn't on the prototype. That makes three industries on module "A" including the Barge Interchange. So I did add two extras from the outset. Cheers.
Well said. Its your railway, your entertainment. Love what you have done, it has inspired me to be more creative with my scenery on my railway with no purpose. Please keep the videos coming.
Thank you Sir. Furthermore, there are two "other" industries on module "A" anyway. That makes three. Jeesh . . . how many more industries does one need in ten feet?
Boomer, I don’t know who made the comment, or what their intent was, but my take is that this is YOUR model railroad and it is to satisfy your pleasure of modeling. Any other purpose the model serves is secondary to your love of the hobby and should be thought of as such. If you want to strictly enforce “the rules” regarding the “purpose” of the model then this moves from a hobby of passion to bordering on becoming an obligation or job. If they disagree with your interpretation, or application, that is an internal struggle of their own that they should keep civil or to themselves. I apologize for the fiery response but it takes a great deal of confidence, time, and effort to put these videos out for everyone to enjoy FREE of charge so I have nothing but respect for you, your efforts, and the inspiration you provide to many of us in your audience. With all the strife in the real world, the hobby world should be a place of camaraderie, not division.
I think the comment was meant to be constructive. But then there is always a risk when you "rock" Boomer's world . . . especially when I have clearly layed out the plan on dozens of occasions. Sometimes, a gentle reminder is due, something I'll admit I need to work on. My mother told me I was no shrinking violet and my father told me to keep it loaded . . . lol. Cheers ~ Boomer.
I agree entirely with what others have already written. I appreciate that you take your time to freely share your art with us. I'm surprised though that you have crafted a defensive response for this one viewer's comment. Are all artists so sensitive ;-) Your loyal subscribers have offered their assurances that your plan is as outstanding as your skilled implementation. Bravo sir. Thanks again for sharing this with us.
What’s the reason? You don’t need a reason, it’s your world make it what you want. The fun is in building it to me. Btw I admire your patience for accuracy and detail… great job man. 👍
There model railroaders and then there are railroad modelers. I personally am here to watch the skill and effort detail that goes into making the model as realistc and as well detailed. It is a master class in modeling that encompasses a railroad. It is a winner in my books even if it was just a static display. Keep up the great work, Reason = keeping your sanity. Pupose = staying out of 'trouble' :)
This hobby is for your enjoyment, and it is nice that you share your skills and abilities with the rest of us. A parallel is graffiti some detest it but to model reality it exists and should be represented. You talk about reality and the real world stops rail use and this also should be represented to be accurate. Comments are made as it doesn’t sit well with our individual ideals of the hobby, and that is what makes it great as you can open a box and run it or tear it apart and build a masterpiece. It brings enjoyment and that’s what counts. I enjoy your purpose filled layout
A good reason for this railroad is to help other modelers with techniques and ideas to help make our railroads more realistic and visually enjoyable. If this railroad never runs, it’s been an inspiration to many of us to see what can be done with patients and skill. Purpose is a personal thing. Don’t ever say someone else’s imagination and work is without purpose.
Build whatever you want. some modellers don’t even keep em around, just take a few photos then start the next incarnation because they enjoy the model building journey. I plan to build a static diorama that will only be used for photography. Just for fun…
Pretty certain there's lots of "purpose" and there's lots of "reason" ! I love your video's , I'm getting ready to try dry brushing some static grass later today (one of your tips). Unfortunately the internet has become a breading ground for the uneducated, misinformed, and for some reason people who obviously only have "trolling" on the internet as there hobby which is the reason I am slowly disconnecting from it. There's six thousand other subscribers out there who think your great to. Keep up the amazing work.
I respect the comment (concerning the out-of-service) Brewery, but fundamentally disagree with the reasoning concerning operations. I also respect the person. Having said this, there is no need "strain a gnat when we all swallow a camel" . . . lol. Cheers.
To paraphrase something you said in the last video: “let the prototype be a guide.” Not every spur needs to be active or switched every day. Or ever. It still contributes to the overall realism of the scene. Abandoned and out of service buildings are fun to model. Stay safe!
the reason and purpose of my railroad are the same, to survive. I love to model abandoned or out of service industries. it helps to set the tone for poor looking track and equipment. The line exist because it once thrived but nowadays it struggles to keep the revenue coming in with so many customers lost over the years. Cheers Rob
I've been watching you for a while now, and BTW you're doing an excellent job so far!! That said and as a modeler myself, I say if you're going for prototype, fine!! And in addition, I also think is that other modeler doesn't understand something about modeling that brewery (or anything else for that matter) is that you can always add an extra siding or something and "reopen" it again if you wish!! That's the beauty of a model railroad!! Anyways, keep up the great work and don't let the naysayers get to ya!! I look forward to see how it's all gonna turn out in the end!!! 😉
Prototypical... Such a double edged sword... This is why I endeavour to a 'hat tip' to prototyping - I like things to look reasonably authentic but without boxing myself into too much of a corner. Enjoy, cheers!👍
Exactly my sentiments. If I had another four feet of lead (off layout footprint). I may have considered it. But I thought I explained that in the previous episode. Oh well . . . Cheers and thanks for sharing. ~ Boomer.
As a recently new subscriber to your channel, anything I can say has already been posted. What you have taught me is; too slow down and do a little at a time; and, enjoy the journey. I now only work on 300mm at a time, trying new techniques and, colour choices. A common phrase in Australia is "to have a go" and that's what your channel gives me. The confidence "to have a go". Keep up your excellent work you're an inspiration to all who watch your channel. BTW Tamiya Flat Earth and IPA mix is my new favourite colour. 👍👍👍
This hobby is about creativity that lies within our soul. not to criticize or be to judgmental. Love and respect others and keep your options to yourself.
I love the type of guy you are mate! You are an artist, I love that someone cant handle that there is a trackside building not serviced by rail on a model railway. Especially a small shelf layout! who does that?!. You do Boomer, you do.. Why? because it suits your canvas. It makes sense.. Honestly, I have not seen any shelf layouts that even come close to the immersion level of River Road. This one will be treasured by many, even if they only get to watch YOU play with it :P I hold my tea cup up to you sir.. Cheers
The purpose of a model railroad is whatever the builder wants it to be. There are enough different things in the hobby to appeal to everyone. I operate on a friend's basement filling layout that had no scenery until recently. When my friend got it operational he found he enjoyed operating more then he enjoyed adding scenery. I'm sure there are those in the hobby who would say that's not model railroading. But if that's the part of the hobby he enjoys, no one should tell him he's wrong. If having the brewery being abandoned fits your operations plan no one can tell you you're wrong. It is your railroad and I'm learning a lot watching you build it. I'm even using some of your techniques on my friend's layout now that he's decided to scenic it after 20 years of bare plywood. Don't worry about what anyone says. It's your railroad, if they want a brewery to switch they can build one on their layout.
This is a good summary of the common approach to the hobby. Whatever floats your boat at the end of the day. I like operations as well. It's just that I only care about the "last mile" deliveries, etc. Each to his or her own and we all have fun! Cheers.
IMHO, this has nothing to do with the model railroad, it could be knitting for all that matters. Since I've been watching your videos for awhile, to me this seems to be your way of therapy. It's relaxing, de-stressing and you are having a blast. At the same time you are sharing with us some of your tricks of the trade, for which we are very greatful. We are right behind you! ;)
I'm usually pretty good at brushing off stuff like that. Thanks for the encouraging words. And yes . . . I am having a blast as you correctly described. Cheers.😁
Hello Boomer....I can't add anything new, it's already been said. * It's your Railroad, It's yours to do what you like*, and we who choose to watch, love to watch. Love your passion, love your modelling, love your Railroad!
Thank You! Obviously I share the same passion for modelling railroads and trains as most do. But, sometimes I just love to model things that are semi-related, but seemingly insignificant, even though they are a part of our rich railroad history. That, my friend, is the beauty of the hobby we all share. Cheers.
Dude. You gotta learn to chill. Critics gonna criticize. Just listen, accept it for what it’s worth (nothing). Life is too short, your work is exceptional and inspirational. It’s a hobby that’s an outlet for creativity and relaxation.
I hate to admit that at 75, the only operable layout I have ever built was a 22-inch radius loop of track on a bicycle wheel just to watch locos run and to prove that a moving model won't climb a hill. I have a lot of models, magazines, and books which I enjoy.
I get that. Books are the next best thing for me. I feel my best though when I am building a model. It's always been this way except now I can share some of it, which is cool. I'm having tremendous fun. Cheers.
Hi Boomer that was very well said mate. I always go by the rule "it's your layout you do what you like" and the most important thing is to enjoy it! that's why we build layouts right?! to enjoy them.- Nicholas.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I have the same room size as yours, but I build my version of the barge job in N scale. As a consequence, since I had enough room to pursue my wishes of maximum operations (that's my purpose), I took some artistic license and reopened all industries. Was it a good idea? I'm not sure: I have hours of operations in perspective, which is not doable when you operate alone. My last session kept me busy for 1,5 hour and it was too long. As a consequence, I sometimes narrow down my operations to the still rail-served industries, even if I keep all of them ready, for variety. Tracks are here, I just decide not to go place by discarding some waybills. I think I will design some reversible scenery options to justify with obvious hints why I'm not operating a given industry ("look, there is a fence"). I'm currently building the barge slip (following your excellent advice and documentation, thank you again for your videos), and I don't think I would have enough room to keep the brewery in my operating list, since the slip, with all its fragile details, would be between me and the brewery track. Maybe it could also be a justification for not serving yours? I'm not sure if the slip would be the centerpiece of my layout though. I also have the Fraser bridge and the gypsum hemispheric silo as key elements. We have two different approaches of the same topic, different constraints as well; we've made different choices, and I totally love yours. Keep going, it is your railroad! ;)
Sounds great to me! I always thought it would be a fantastic subject to model in "N" scale. Furthermore, the SRY Trapp Yard in New West is right on the north arm of the Fraser River as well - another great subject for N Scale. Cheers.
If you let every comment get to you , your modeling will get mighty difficult being in a straight jacket. To quote another you tube modeler, “it’s my railroad” that being said, your work is fantastic and anyone who makes such statements is probably jealous of you awesome work! Model on my friend.
Very nice come back!! I personally feel the purpose of model railroading is to give the owner/ builder/ operator enjoyment! Period! Build that brewery!!! And have fun with it!!!
Operations are different for everyone. In my case I agree with the "doctrine" but the personal theology of operations varies from individual to individual. A finely detailed locomotive idling on a rustic siding is operations for me on a given day. Cheers.
Well! Criticism is always good, regardless if it is good or not. However, it is you railroad, so you can do pretty much what ever you wish. So far, your way at looking at the creativity and quality of the build is outstanding. As far, as for the purpose, your layout does make sense, to me at least, given that you are trying the stay close to the prototype and you still need to make it a workable layout. Beside, the pontoon real purpose is to move freight "somewhere."
Well said! I still need to make it a workable layout with operations. But that will come eventually. I'm in no rush, although I think about it alot. Thanks for sharing. Cheers.
Boomer, you have captured a moment in time, like a photograph. You are preserving the past, and making it come alive again. Isn't that really what it's all about?
It doesn’t matter if the brewery is in service or not it is part of the scene that is all just do it your way Boomer it is your build and it is looking great so far 😀👍
Pretty bad take from whoever said that. Seems like they're going by the book on HOW things should be done blah blah ect, instead of building a layout just to enjoy the hobby. WHO CARES! Its YOUR railroad. Love your videos Boomer. You have shared some great techniques that have greatly expanded my knowledge on the hobby.
The train will be switching in front of it anyway when it services the other warehouse. I agree - "out -of-service" - adds character. Besides, it doesn't mean the building can't be put back into service. Cheers.
Hey Boomer, he saved you a coffee though by increasing your blood pressure. On a serious note: wasn't it just yesterday that I mentioned modelling the passing of time? Our worlds are constantly changing and our models should reflect it. Simple as that. Even free-lance railroads need a serious dose of plausibility, otherwise we're just arranging disneyland.
I was there (at the Brewery), the other day and trucks were loading the "hops" on the others side of the building when SRY rolled by without a care. Cheers.
That's a great comment, although not so the arranging Disneyland?... some model railways are created as an artists' composition to give a physical rendering of an image or concept and are all the better for it and a fantastic visual feast, and an anathema to most that call themselves serious model railroaders. People and especially model railroaders are far too quick to have a need to categorize a model into their perceived idea of what must be correct. Whereas there may be a number of different pathways to get to the same summit and enjoy the same view :)
@@muir8009 True, we do tend to judge, and harshly, too. However... I can't help myself but feel let down when I see a model that poorly reproduces say a house or a tree in miniature. The type of model that has all the extraordinary stuff in mint condition and no ordinary, vanilla (Koester) flavour, a perfect little world, all nice and all shiny and all sanitized. Sorry. That's what I mean by 'arranging disneyland'. And personally I think I'm not so bothered about 'correct' as I am with 'plausible' and to take Boomer's correctly used word 'immersive'. My own enjoyment comes from the whole process from research and observation to execution while experimenting with paints say or learning new techniques to end up with a model that looks like something that might have or did or does exist. So it is about the pathway as you put it. But I will take a picture of the summit as well. Thank you for raising the point on being judgemental, it is a worthy one! Truly is, for us all.
Abandon or buildings no longer needing rail service with trackage on real railroads are used for storage or classification all the time as a time saver. I worked on a real railroad and this was a real practice.
Point - Counterpoint. On the layout I'm building, there are no industries in service to this date. ATSF serviced them through the 70's. Then a few left in the 80's and after the merger BNSF really ran only to San Jacinto a few industries left. So what to do. Model ATSF in the 70's, BNSF today or both. Quandary called and want's it's layout back. The depot was closed in the late 60's early 70's and I didn't want built it as a museum which it is today. You have an easy decision.
The period I model is around 2010. It was the change over of the "Lion Head" logo livery, to the "meat-ball" Rail Link logo. The Brewery, as a rail customer, preceded 2010 by a decade. It's a Kraft beer warehouse served by trucks on the side (not modeled). I don't need another industry there because I have three on module "A" alone. 1. The Barge Slip interchange. 2. The Long Warehouse. 3. The Steel company (yet to be built). No need for a fourth industry, or an explanation, why there should be in my opinion. My hands are full as it is . . . lol. Cheers.
The purpose of any model railroad is to bring pleasure to its builder, and he or she alone get to decide for themselves whether or not it has fulfilled that purpose, not for any one else besides them.
Just ignore those wankers. The internet is full of people with half a thought trying to pass it off as wisdom. They don't deserve to be highlighted. If you're happy with your layout, it's successful.
I love the diversity of all the different styles and scales of layouts on TH-cam. Especially when they represent the creative passions of each individual. Furthermore, I respect those who actually model something to qualify their statements as well. Thanks for sharing! Cheers ~ Boomer.
A model tree by the same logic could be questioned; to what service does it service on the layout if does not provide shade or fruit. But if it is a point of the scenic interest that please you wearther or not it is in use; it serves a purpose. It your layout and you should always do what please yourself.
The purpose of the railroad or model, is for YOUR personal enjoyment. And God Dam its YOUR railroad. Your the Creator, create your world as you see fit. Man don't sweat the rivet counters there just angry little men LOL. On my railroad, there is no graffiti, or over weathered rolling stock, and if a 1920's engine or train runs past a 2020 loco and train so be it, cause I like it that way. =p . Thank for sharing you talent with us, and showing us how to build what we want.
Some people are locked into a very narrow view, and just do not see what others see. If you had decided to just put in some trees where you plan to put the brewery, they probably would not have commented. But, you are trying to capture the feel of the prototype, and that means that you need to have a building there. As you pointed out in Vlog #41, the building is no longer serviced by the railroad, so making it a serviced building is not capturing the essence of the scene. By having it on the layout gives that extra bit of realism that supports the main operational part of that section of the layout - the barge slip.
You summed up my feelings on the matter perfectly. The scene would make for a nice little shelf layout on it's own if someone wanted to model it from a different perspective with a switch lead as well. However, there is just no room on River Road to model it in service without altering the footprint as you described. I could add a siding there ( I might), but it's not a priority right now. Cheers ~ Boomer.
The reason and purpose, This means in its simplest form, the trains have a prototypical purpose for running. Beyond that, we add prototypically inspired operation procedures that minimize model railroad thoughts. A model railroad thought reminds us this is just a toy train that's not real. When we operate like the prototype, we want to think like this is a massive full sized train that needs to be handled with skill if it is to get where it's going safely and without mishap.
I never got the argument that a model railroad needs a purpose. Mine has zero purpose, I have zero industries or operations. Its not my thing. I guess its only purpose is to learn new skills and build models because that's what I ultimately enjoy.
Ruins of a castle on a mountain would be out of service, too - but still those things got often build by model railroaders for the one purpose to just look nice in the background - just build what you like to see as scenery on your railroad 🍻
If the real railroad is in service it has a perpuse without the Brewery so why isn't the model. We're all at a different level of understanding and that's why we enjoy different things.
Absolutely. If I rebuild the Glover Road "Milner" grain elevator (which is out of service), I will re-activate it in the model. It's up to me which has nothing to do with someone else's dogma. Cheers.
I don't need a reason for my railroad, because of artistic license. That's like saying I have to have a terminal for my Daylight when I'm modeling somewhere that's no-where near a terminal.
Artistic license is not a license for anarchy. In my experience it has license to make things fit aesthetically in the same manner as a the builder sees it. I'll never apologize for my confidence because I earned it. Cheers
@@boomerdiorama No need to apologize, that's why we all our own model railroad right? Some of us Like postage stamp scenes, while others like operations.
It's your game, so you get to set the rules. If you want dinosaurs, elves and crystals then go for it. There was a kind of tension in the hobby magazines between extreme rivet counters, extreme operators, and people just having creative fun. The uptight folks really alienated the creatives and kind of killed the fun of the hobby. John Olson and Malcolm Furlow made some cartoon cowboy layouts that got big press in MR; but then the car cards and switchlists guys were upset, and the correct to the last rivet guys were upset. Hard to make everyone happy but defend your space and your time from those assassins of joy.
So going by what this person said... that means from now on, no one is allowed to build a model railroad that is just based on scenery (example being Cajon pass, Tehachapi loop etc), because it's just running and no operations/purpose. Or maybe you can... but if you have say a farm house, you must make sure it has real smoke out the chimney and must have real ppl walking around..otherwise it doesn't have a purpose.
I have no personal issue with the person as you know. Operations, for me, can be two Dash 9's idling on a siding, waiting for the call. So, yes, your point is correct. Operations are different things to different people. It's the legalistic dogma which makes me sick sometimes. Cheers.
Ummmm.. counting bolts i guess but anyway I have alot of respect for you pushing back, some would agree and some not... l know when I get done one day on a section of diorama... are people going to complain of my godzilla standing afar. Thanks for the videos....
. . . what about King Kong? Man I used to love those old Godzilla vs King Kong movies where my mother would send us to the theater with home-made popcorn, and twenty five cents, to get into the Saturday matinee double feature. Cheers ~ Boomer.
@@boomerdiorama i dont have kong sold him a long time ago..but my godzilla is a one of a kind , about 24 inches in height and yes I do miss the old movies, my mom was a big monster, horror and kung fu nut...lol
Hi Boomer, I detect a level of frustration and disappointment, this is a hobby after all and you do a fantastic job showing your techniques and processes, after all you don't have to. People have the right to comment but they should not criticize your decisions on what or where goes on your layout. I would just like to say that I look forward to your tutorials as they give me great ideas for my own layout and look forward to your new videos. Too many Keyboard Warriors on TH-cam should really start to respect other peoples work and effort they put into showing others their techniques and layouts. Regards Gary
Good point. There was a little disappointment on my behalf for good reason. If I never bothered to take the time to read every single comment (that gets published), out of respect for the community, and at least try to give a thoughtful response (while I still can), without just spamming hearts, etc, I wouldn't care I guess. The reality is, at this point of the burgeoning community, I care about what is published . . . so be carful . . . lol. Cheers ~ Boomer.
Honestly, this makes me want to hang a bunch of clear tubes from the ceiling and add some track, dress a few locomotives up as hamsters and start posting videos tagged “super accurate scale model railroad” just to annoy these people.
I don't understand his quote. There are many background buildings that you can buy that are just a part of the scenery. This building helps make the scene.
People take themselves a little to seriously. the REAL reason for any model railroad is to please the owner / builder. If he or she is happy that is all that matters.
I have remarkable fun every day I work on River Road. I have never been bored with the artistic side of model making and dioramas my whole life. I feel my best doing it and ooze with confidence because I earned it on the back of poverty. I am full of joy when I express the gift I so diligently practice and strive to perfect even when I fail . . . often. Cheers and thanks for sharing your thoughts.~ Boomer.
I posted this (in quotation marks below) in yesterday's video in response to that person's remark (I've got your back 😉). I find those comments so unhelpful. Die-hards like that with a narrow view turn people off this hobby. "David....chill dude. There is so much purpose to a layout like this one. When you think about it altruistically the purpose is for Boomer's enjoyment not to serve a model of a brewery. Afterall no model can actually brew beer so there are never going to be customers. Chillax and enjoy the fun and realism."
I respect anyone who is bold enough to criticize. Just because I push back doesn't mean I don't like them. In reality the Brewery is in business. It changed to a Craft Beer Brewery served by trucks (off layout). The rail customer (at the rear) which I choose to model. no longer exists, and SRY Rail Link doesn't care anyway. Cheers and thanks for sharing. ~ Boomer.
Yeah Boomer, definitely see the purpose!! Out of service industries are always a part of our world. Whether they are or not, doesn’t say anything about the purpose of an adjacent railroad. It might just be a new startup will find the old brewery as its new location, or it will dilapidate into oblivion, in both cases it doesn’t matter. Also, because if you would like to model the brewery as a still working one, that’s your choice. As it is to choose to model the out of service one. Even when the brewery was still in service, I anticipate the part of the track in question was at the very least used partly or temporarily aa a classification track. For the visual story you’re telling it absolutely doesn’t matter. It’s a background building. It could even be transformed into a banana or cheese storage, which is predominantly served by road. The prototype defines all kinds of purpose, not just the ones purposeful to the railroad. Infrastructure as a prototype most certainly constitutes dilapidation, whether new or old, empty shells or repurposed ones. I think it’s exactly that what makes model railroading and modeling interesting. To show or give a glance of that side of the world, which is constantly in ‘motion’.
When I was on location at this very Brewery the other day. There was a truck servicing the bins on the other side of the building. Trucks replaced the rail service long ago. Therefore, my version is completely prototypical anyway. But in the end who cares really, it will get lots of show as a switch lead anyway. Cheers.
You know, a lot of negative or critical comments posted on TH-cam videos are written by old and cranky men, or by drunk and cranky ones. Some exhibit Jekyll-and-Hyde symptoms--you can always tell when they've been drinking. I don't know the comment that was behind your retort, nor do I have any specific reason to suspect whoever wrote it was impaired, but there's plenty of reasons to discount what people say in their comments, even the positive ones. Should any TH-camr want to turn off commenting (as YT makes possible), I'd have no reason to object. If someone really wants to comment, they can take the trouble to email. That alone would eliminate 99% of trolling and sources of other pointless blather . . . maybe even this very comment itself!
I don't disagree with your analysis and I respect your opinion as well. However, I like the open platform of (civilized) free speech and the promotion of online community surrounding the channel. It would probably be boring for me otherwise . . . lol. My rebuttal was not personal but, rather, more objectional. I welcome criticism on this channel, most notably from my subscribers, because their input makes the channel better and they don't usually have an agenda or mandatory group think mentality. Having said this, I will push back if some one wants to quote another respectable person, out of context, to support their own agenda. Cheers and thank you for sharing. ~ Boomer.
Once again great work , the criticism that was lobbed at you was uncalled for, it obvious that he has unfortunately not used any critical analyses in his thought processes. Just because the brewery is out of service , doesn't mean its not prototypical, buildings and infrastructure come and go, It called life. May be this so called respected modeler has now lost some credibility. I appreciate all the time and effort you put into these videos , my modeling skills have definitely been challenged have and improved. What more of a positive contribution could one make towards the hobby thanks
Man Boomer, you do fast fast work, my God, and it's museum quality to boot. Anybody that would talk negative about this stuff is in the naysayers club, and everybody knows what everybody thinks bout naysayers. Your the man Boomer, and when your at the top of your game, you think second place will wave back at you if you wave at them. Hell no they won't, they want your spot and will do anything to get it. Let that fools comments roll of your back like a drop of water rolls of a ducks back. You know I got your back jack . . . Cheers Big Buddy. And what a find of a diesel locomotive, man, I wish I had the money I'd buy that dude in a heart beat and donat it to a railroad historical society. Peace out . . . Cheers
everyone has their right to do what they want with their layouts, it is their time and money thon the train service. ey spend on it. I find your apporach is right, as you are to model things as they are in a certain time and place. It is common to see some warehouses out of business OR gone for trucks and to model that is as prototypical as having a customer who relies on rail services. If you are to model some things from real life, those empty industries are part of it today, just as having anything else. In a perfect world, there would be tracks zick zacking everywhere, even small car shop would have their own sidings, but reality does not work that way, besides if the brewery was active, you would not be able to classify your freight cars for the ferry and the remaining customers on your line. I prefer your way of doing and seeing things. Cheers from Sweden
If I planned on the Brewery being "in service" there would be no Barge Slip there. It's one hundred yards off the layout in reality anyway. Even then, there is no lead to service it. Cheers.
Ummm the brewery is just a scenic backdrop. Could've been a hill. Doesn't mean the hill needs a quarry or a coal mine (NZ coal mines were always in the side of a hill). From the start you'd stated the model was about the float barge carrier thing. There's a lot of modellers out there which follow the every industry needs it's own siding idea, or every whistle stop needs a fully functioning industry or three. I personally find it disappointing how many project their personal ideal model railway concept as being what should be done, and also their perspective of model realism extends only to the (albeit superb executed) scenery.
The Brewery is exactly that . . . a 3D flat background. It functions as a craft beer industry off the layout, served by trucks. Besides, module "A" has three industries already. No need for anything else other then details, etc, suggesting the realty of truck vs rail competition. Cheers.
Barge service and supporting trackage. What does he want... Nothing back there? Everything from the banks to the grass to the 50lb rail stub has a purpose. Because you thought it through!
Clarify it in my limited opinion - - - It is about what you like and how you desire to build and operated in your own fashion and screw everyone else as they are not you and they are not having your dream!
I still have fun even though some want to build their dream through other people's hands. It's easy to point and direct, but not so easy to build it. Cheers.
Hey Boomer…maybe the individual who made the comment is more interested in “purpose” than actually modeling something prototypically….the way you have…you model a “slice” of the real-world pie…or…and this is my own view…he is envious of your presentation, your positive following…AND your ability…I’m sure he has 600 cars, 35 locomotives and his track is still is unweathered…but he has a “purpose” 🤨 Keep up the GREAT work…and pissing off the repeat contributors on Model Railroader Magazine…who constantly recycle the same contributors over and over…that why I dropped my subscription 🤗
It a funny thing the old school model railroad community. They often lament about the fragmentation of the hobby, yet the online Model railroad community is growing and burgeoning. It feels fresh and new. I think some are worried the "new" and innovated way it is going now and they feel left out or something. Who knows, but it is what it is. Cheers and thanks for commenting.
That's an interesting comment about model railroader magazine. I dropped my subscription for what I thought was a pretty poor article which seemed to be rather denigrating to all the pioneers of the hobby (we're talking well before the war, both wars) which got me thinking as to how much interest and appreciation do these guys have in model railroading?
I couldn’t agree with you more, Boomer. The out of service brewery does have a purpose. It adds to the esthetics and beauty of your diorama. What should you do, leave it out because it’s not in service? A nice blank spot, that’ll really add purpose won’t it? Now I’m really looking forward to seeing this brewery. Additionally, when you build models like that you’re teaching the model railroad community a skill - how to scratch build. Yet another purpose for your out of service brewery. No purpose….really?
I don't know why there seems to be a push back against the doctrine of model railroad operations concerning a creative point of view. In the end, River Road is essentially my interpretation, of a real world experience, encapsulated in the comforts of my own home and modeled according to my convictions - not others, who can build their own. However, he show must go on! Cheers and thanks for sharing. ~ Boomer.
That quotation makes no sense. People model all sorts of things with no intention of "operating" them. Do those who model warships from World War I intend to operate those vessels in the water, otherwise the time and effort put into their construction was a waste? The purpose of constructing a model is simply to provide enjoyment for the model builder. Full stop.
Whatever is part of the story is all that matters to me. Besides, there are loads of opportunity for operations down the road. Furthermore, there are plenty enough channels on TH-cam which spam operations over and over again as well. Cheers.
So, you didn't install three turnouts to service all the loading docks, individually I might add, to improve your layout? I'm shocked and disappointed, Boomer! I dreamt you were made of sterner stuff so now I'm disappointed in myself! I think this is where I exclaim "how dare you!". 😉 Seriously, I thought a concrete apron along the front, with imbedded rail curving towards the lead but not connected, would have been a great addition to the loading hopper. But seeing the space between the lead and front of brewery, with the boxcar for reference, it would look far too contrived. A hint of past rail service could do it justice but not at the risk of contrivance nor be the reason for the layout's being.
Those are my exact thoughts Gary. If I had of known, prior to the build, I would have added two additional inches to the width of the layout (right-of-way). But this is what happens in model railroad planning all the time. Especially, since the layout is a production in some ways. Hindsight is great but a foregone conclusion at times. Cheers.
I think it is probably instinctive for people who want to see their vision realized through someone else's hands. The problem with that is they don't do the work. They only care to direct. I feel sorry for those who succumb to the former and the latter. I have witnessed many a channel go down for those reasons alone. You have to protect your business at the end of the day if you want to maintain the fun factor. Cheers - Boomer.
@@boomerdiorama Many of the most critical commenters are not even building a model or have a channel. If they do, it is pure trash. as I said before, f.... Love your channel. Great stuff, I am learning...
I enjoy your dedication to detail in the construction and weathering of your layout, but what I have a problem with is hearing you waxing philosophical about a lot of different ideas and concepts. I don't think most modelers come at it from that angle. They just want to build and operate. Just my humble opinion.
Thank You Bob. I happen to love waxing philosophical about my ideas and concepts whenever I feel like it because it's my channel. Thanks for the tips! Turn me off, if you don't like it. Cheers.
It happens and no hard feelings. I call out remarks like that because I welcome them as well. Otherwise, I won't address comments. I do it out of respect for everyone while I still can. There may be a day where I can't keep up. Who knows. Cheers ~ Boomer.
You don't need a reason for your model railway to exist. And if you do need a reason, what the f@#¢ is wrong with just having it so you can play trains. Done get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with having your model railway have a reason, a purpose. But at the same time, why do you need a purpose. For pitys sake, enjoy your model railway how you want to. It's "your" model railway, run it, do with it as you please. But don't be critical of other people's reason for having or doing what they want with their model railroad. Isn't this this meant to be an enjoyable hobby??
It is pretentious to suggest that a model railroads main purpose is operation. If this was true then the question must be asked: Why are model railroaders wasting their time constructing dioramas? Boomer I think you give the game away in the title of your channel 'Boomer Dioramas: The Immersive Model Railroad' It isn't 'Boomer Operations: The Immersive Model Railroad.' As you may recall I am confined in space traveling the world on a yacht. Doesn't dampen my enthusiasm for constructing non operational model railroad 'dioramas'. Most of the trackwork I model is abandoned rather than main line. It is far more interesting in a diorama. Just as a painter or a photographer attempts to capture a moment in history a model railroader chooses to do the same thing 3 dimensionally. Operation is only one component of model railroading but not the 'main purpose'. Some modelers are more interested in photographing their work, some prefer to count every rivet and some just prefer to watch their out of the box trains run in circles. Each to their own. I recommend your channel to any aspiring modeler, whether railroader or not. Your videos are a wonderful window into an experienced modelers 'reasons and methods'. Are your methods and reasoning the way I model? Not always, however, there are very few who document their 'reasons and methods' as well as you and I find myself inspired by your videos. It is a joy to see them appear on my TH-cam feed. Keep up the great work.
I have a coffee table layout where the train just chases it's tail. It serves no other purpose other than to entertain ME and I love it. Keep up the good work, this old dog is learning some new tricks.
I have an old rusty steamer Baldwin. It just sits there and entertains me . I'll never run it again. It would ruin it for me . . . lol. Cheers.
You're building it for YOUR enjoyment...that's what matters. Looks GREAT so far!
Yes indeed I am certainly having fun. Lot's of potential ops down the road as well when the time comes. Cheers.

Cool, thanks! ~ Boomer.
I recently watched # 42 and pretty much agree with most of the comments. I have been modelling for close to 50 years now and have run across these kind of people , most likely they don,t have a layout. Keep up the excellent work .
Thanks for sharing Richard! Cheers ~ Boomer.

thanks ,will do .
thanks ,will do .
Thank you very much! I appreciate all the support. ~ Boomer.
Great retort Boomer. The operations on the barge slip alone warrants the build of this incredible layout.
It has a purpose, the out of service brewery, it is telling a story, your story... pulls us in, plays with our thoughts! It has a purpose. :)
I like that . . . you know what's going on.😁
The sheer vision of one to share is invaluable to those of us whom attempt to imitate master modeling techniques.....lead on !!!!!
Thank you! The sheer vision of one to share, in the context of a supportive community, is a major motivator as well ;-) Cheers ~ Boomer.
I agree entirely with what others have already written. I appreciate that you take your time to freely share your art with us. I'm surprised though that you have crafted a defensive response for this one viewer's comment. Very nice beginnings to your railroad I look forward to seeing more of it as you have time to build it and video it.
That's the plan! I work on it every day . . . almost.
What’s the reason? You don’t need a reason, it’s your world make it what you want. The fun is in building it to me. Btw I admire your patience for accuracy and detail… great job man. 👍
Thank you! Cheers and Happy New Year!
The beauty is I can operate it eventually! Thank You! Cheers
Thank you for sharing. Cheers.
Yes. I agree. This railroad will most certainly run . . . eventually. Loads of potential for endless operations as well. Cheers.
Build whatever you want. some modellers don’t even keep em around, just take a few photos then start the next incarnation because they enjoy the model building journey. I plan to build a static diorama that will only be used for photography. Just for fun…
Right on! I know what that means. Cheers.
Stay safe!
Thank You Thom. I have been watching your layout ops. Things look good over there! Cheers.
the reason and purpose of my railroad are the same, to survive. I love to model abandoned or out of service industries. it helps to set the tone for poor looking track and equipment. The line exist because it once thrived but nowadays it struggles to keep the revenue coming in with so many customers lost over the years. Cheers Rob
I agree with that line of thinking. Poor out your emotions into your art whatever it is.
Great three minutes and good food for thought
Oh well. You know how it is Paul. Nice to hear from you as well! Cheers ~ Boomer.
Exactly. I am well into the build now, and I modeled in the option to open a bay door. It was always in the plan. ;-) Cheers! ~ Boomer.

Cheers
Thanks for sharing your thoughts and taking the time to write them. Cheers! ~ Boomer.
No need to defend your vision. It is a spectacular layout. Well done!
Thank You. Cheers.
Cheers.

Thank you for that! I appreciate it and you are right. Cheers ~ Boomer.
Cheers.
The purpose and reason of my model railroad is the pure fun of building. Nothing else.

Hi Boomer that was very well said mate. I always go by the rule "it's your layout you do what you like" and the most important thing is to enjoy it! that's why we build layouts right?! to enjoy them.- Nicholas.
Thank you. Often times, it's the naysayers who don't actually build, but have the most to say about a subject. I say , prove it! Cheers ~ Boomer.
Thank You Richard. I understand your point of view well. Cheers ~ Boomer.
Yes Steven, it most certainly is about that as well. Good call! Cheers.

Well said! Thank You. Cheers.
Thank you! I'm really looking forward and having fun with the Brewery right now. Cheers.
I think having out of service building bring it interest and the ability to make something look weathered and worn

This is exactly what SRY Rail Link does. They shove the cars onto this spur when they sort the barge, etc. Cheers.
My hands are full as it is . . . lol. Cheers.
More then half of my railroad is out of service. Paved over, abandoned, or torn out. Welcome to Southern Pacific in 1974….
Lol . . . I love it! This deserves a notice from Boomer! - Cheers! ~ Boomer.😁
Please share love my SP too.
The purpose of any model railroad is to bring pleasure to its builder, and he or she alone get to decide for themselves whether or not it has fulfilled that purpose, not for any one else besides them.
I agree. A tough one to find immunity against though. Especially on social media. Cheers.
I wholeheartedly agree. Thanks for sharing! Cheers.
You are welcome! Cheers.
this railroad is great
It's coming along. Thank you!
What's the reason for this railroad? For YOUR own enjoyment!
Absolutely!
An idling Dash-9 on a rustic siding is a form of operations for me on a given day as well. Cheers.
The purpose of a layout is so you don't go nuts with nothing to do.
Lol . . . Lol . . . lol. I am in full agreement . . . or rather go insane. Cheers.
Checkmate . . . I believe he's checkmated 🙃
Thank you for watching and commenting! Cheers ~ Boomer.
I never got the argument that a model railroad needs a purpose. Mine has zero purpose, I have zero industries or operations. Its not my thing. I guess its only purpose is to learn new skills and build models because that's what I ultimately enjoy.
Thanks for sharing! Cheers!
Ruins of a castle on a mountain would be out of service, too - but still those things got often build by model railroaders for the one purpose to just look nice in the background - just build what you like to see as scenery on your railroad 🍻
Thanks for sharing! Cheers ~ Boomer.
@@BattleshipOrion I like them both. Operations can wait though . . . 😁
Lol . . . I like that! It sounds malicious, but I like it! Thanks for sharing.
Cheers.
if there is a industry out of service in the real world, put it in service on your model railroad, everyone needs a storageroom ;)
Either way works seven days to Sunday. ;-)
Ummmm.. counting bolts i guess but anyway I have alot of respect for you pushing back, some would agree and some not... l know when I get done one day on a section of diorama... are people going to complain of my godzilla standing afar.
Regards
Gary
Well said
Cheers.
Honestly, this makes me want to hang a bunch of clear tubes from the ceiling and add some track, dress a few locomotives up as hamsters and start posting videos tagged “super accurate scale model railroad” just to annoy these people.
Lol . . . I never joined a model railroad club my whole life. I was to busy working . . . lol. Cheers.
I don't understand his quote. There are many background buildings that you can buy that are just a part of the scenery. This building helps make the scene.
Not sure what you mean?
Cheers.
Boomer has teeth!! Good for you buddy, stand your ground. Bravo to you!
Lol . . . ;-)
Thank You! I'm having a riot building the Brewery in the meantime. Cheers.
Peace out . . . Cheers
Thank you Brian. I appreciate your encouraging words of wisdom! ;-) Cheers ~ Boomer
everyone has their right to do what they want with their layouts, it is their time and money thon the train service. ey spend on it.
I think so. The Brewery will always be in play regardless, as a switch lead and classification stub anyway. Cheers.
Cheers.
They that clown go find a screw driver and sit on it and spin....then he can look lime a human pin wheel...keep on doing your nice work.
Thank You. Cheers ~ Boomer.
Hey Boomer…maybe the individual who made the comment is more interested in “purpose” than actually modeling something prototypically….the way you have…you model a “slice” of the real-world pie…or…and this is my own view…he is envious of your presentation, your positive following…AND your ability…I’m sure he has 600 cars, 35 locomotives and his track is still is unweathered…but he has a “purpose” 🤨
Keep up the GREAT work…and pissing off the repeat contributors on Model Railroader Magazine…who constantly recycle the same contributors over and over…that why I dropped my subscription 🤗
~ Boomer.
Rule one applies
;-)
Seriously, I thought a concrete apron along the front, with imbedded rail curving towards the lead but not connected, would have been a great addition to the loading hopper.
Cheers.
How ridiculous. There are no laws about building a diorama or model railroad/railway. Most of us build whatever we want because we want to. F ‘em
Cheers.
Wow, that was a pretty foolish remark made by whoever that was. Never been a question in my mind what the reasoning and logic was on your layout.
Some people need a reason. Some don't. No need to apologize . . . lol. Cheers.
It is pretentious to suggest that a model railroads main purpose is operation. If this was true then the question must be asked: Why are model railroaders wasting their time constructing dioramas?
Boomer I think you give the game away in the title of your channel 'Boomer Dioramas: The Immersive Model Railroad' It isn't 'Boomer Operations: The Immersive Model Railroad.'
As you may recall I am confined in space traveling the world on a yacht.
Thank you Garry. You always seem to drop the timely, and well thought out, comments in the hour of need . . . lol. Cheers friend ~ Boomer.
