She is cute, but her co-lead, Anni-Frid Lyngstad is the one that got the TV and modeling gigs, 1967-1972, during her EMI Sweden and TV era. Yes, Frida got her TV Show singing gig's because of her vocal talent, but that is were she got noticed for her beauty and her fit body by the modeling people. If you pay attention to ABBA, it is Frida with the fun, flirty, and confident personality. Frida was that groups pro vocalist and on stage pro. A natural front and center performer/entertainer. She is the one that got the sweet deal contract in 1972. Stig Anderson may have been Polar Music but Frida had the pull. B & B were already with Stig Anderson Polar Music, They were house producer's writing and producing for lots of artist to include Lena Andersson. Bjorn and Agnetha were married. Benny and Frida were bf/gf. But Frida was not committed to the group. She quit the foursome after their cabaret shows winter of 70/71. EMI Sweden wanted Frida to re-sign/extend her solo contract (1967-72). Stig wanted Frida at Polar as solo artist and to return to the group. It took a year to get Frida to commit. Frida was a hot property in 1972. She checked all the boxes. Pro vocalist. Pro on stage. Stage/theater cabaret TV modeling, etc... Lots of experience. If Frida said "no" in 1972, no ABBA. ______ ABBA: Bright Lights Dark Shadows The Real Story of ABBA By Carl Magnus Palm

When Agnetha says: "We don't know what will happen in for example '89, and that's what this song is about", I got the chills, because they couldn't have been more right - no-one could have foreseen the collapse of the Soviet Union, the end of the Cold War, the fall of the Berlin Wall or the reunification of Germany!
Just a coincidence, she was paraphrasing the line in that song, which was written in '79, so they wonder what would happen ten years later. So like you say, no one could have foreseen all those things, and that includes all four members of ABBA ;-)
Well, every 10 years (decade) or so some changes usually happen in the world, be that cultural, political, or economic... course there's no way to predict it precisely, but what we do know is that the only "constant" in this world is "change", and hopefully for the better. ;) For example around 1970 - Vietnam war, 1980 - the end of the disco era / cold war, 1990 - the fall of the USSR and its satellite countries, 2000/1 - 9-11, 2010 - lots of geo-political changes, etc. As you can see some big changes happen every decade or so, and that's what ABBA has "predicted" ;)
Writing the kinds of songs that they liked to hear is actually why writers write novels. We write the kinds of books we want to read and if other people like the book or in this case the song then the result is a perfect match.
Agnetha's musing about what the world would be like in 1989 is particularly interesting since one of the singular events of that year was the tearing down of the Berlin Wall. It would have been hard to envision that in 1980.
NO ONE COMES CLOSE TO THIS PERFECTION IN MUSIC FOR ME. THE DIFFERENT STYLES IN SONGS, THE GIRLS VOCALS, SOLO, AND THE GIRLS HARMONIZING, OUT OF THIS WORLD. THEIR RANGE OF USING SUCH DIFFERENT INSTRUMENTS, I MUST BOW DOWN IN RESPECT. I DO I DO I DO I DO I DO, MADE FALL IN LOVE WITH SAXOPHONES, MOVE ON, WITH FLUTES, ONE OF US, WITH THE MANDOLIN, AND ALL OF THEIR OTHER SONGS, THE PIANO, GUITARS, SYNTHEZISERS, DRUMS.......AND NOT TO FORGET, RUTGER GUNNARSSONS WAY OF PLAYING THE BASS. JUST CHECK OUT THE BASSLINES IN THESE JUST A FEW SONGS: ONE OF US, DANCING QUEEN, GIMME! GIMME! GIMME! ( A MAN AFTER MIDNIGHT ). HE WAS A GENIOUS BASS PLAYER. BJØRN AND BENNY, MASTERS OF MELODIES AND LYRICS, AGNETHA AND ANNI-FRID, MASTERED THEIR VOCALS. AND WHEN THEY JOINED FORCES HARMONIZING, A THIRD POWERFUL VOICE CAME EXPLODING THROUGH. THANK YOU FOR THE MUSIC, SO FAR ABBA🤩🤩🤩🤩
I don’t think the members of ABBA fully realise the importance of what they created together. Their recordings are as significant as The Beatles, or Beach Boys. It’s a shame that there isn’t more footage of them performing as a group, because those performances were spectacular.
Morning Sky I think you should probably go and have a listen to Good Vibrations and God Only Knows again. All of The Beatles, especially Paul McCartney, were massively influenced by Pet Sounds, so for that alone, I think it’s fair to include the Beach Boys in the “significant recordings” category. The vocal only arrangements on Pet Sounds, are stunning. If you haven’t heard them, it’s worth tracking them down.
They have toured surprisingly very little, and have done most of their work in the studio, in part due to Agnetha's fear of flying, but generally felt more comfortable in the studio.
@@BillAnt , They toured a lot, they just did not your in the USA that much, probably on advice from their management. The USA didn't like them that much, whereas elsewhere around the world, they were as big as The Beatles.
@@BroccoliBeefed - I remember hearing that way back in 1892, when I first heard of them. Then after hearing more of their tunes I thought they were as good as the Beatles, but in some ways better. Much better arrangers for one thing. The beatles tended to reject nice orchestral arrangements for a more raw sound, which to me is just a kind of puritan arrogance, but to each his own. They never would have done much orchestration on their own, or if left up to them only - it was always someone 'else's input, whereas Benny & Bjorn were masters of every instrument and style, AND master arrangers. Benny has an album of just accordion music which is genius level. ABBA - the most under-rated group in history.
Agnetha was not known for her technical abilities nor her live performances. Her co-lead Anni-Frid Lyngstad was an exceptional multiple genre vocalist and had total control over her instrument. Frida also was great on stage so she was leaned on heavily during their live shows. Frida's background was a stage singer performer and TV too. Agnetha was a studio pop singer. Some live stage, but very little. Their backgrounds are totally different as well as their singing style. Agnetha is more pop style. Frida is more classical style. A great book discusses the girls vocal abilities. Frida gets lots of attention. ABBA: Bright Lights Dark Shadows by Carl Magnus Palm Benny, Bjorn and Michael Tretow, ABBA's engineer and her peers considered Frida a master vocalist. Frida gets lots of praise in testimonies from peers about her vocal abilities, starting back in grade school. Hit the stage at 10. Swept all the talent hunts. Pro at age 13, 1958. Frida had over 10 years on stage before her big break in 1967 -- National Best Vocalist. It made her Nationally known, was put on TV lots. Modeling. Radio shows , etc..... She has lots of live stuff on TH-cam and on her solo releases. Agnetha's solo career was in the studio. She does not have much solo vocal centric live material. What I mean by vocal centric is front centre, lights, camera, little or no backing music. This is what Frida did since grade school. Front and center, vocal centric songs that requires phrasing, inflections, carrying the melody, etc.... Frida's roots is classic American standards, classical and jazz. All vocal centric where the vocalist carries the song.
@@danbike9 Have to disagree with you on everything you said about Agnetha. Without taking away Freda's indispensable role in ABBA, to me, Agnetha was known as the soul of the ABBA sound, hands down. I am constantly mesmerized by her masterful expression, and range, of her lead songs every time I hear them. Her extremely complex, energetic, and intricate but harmonizing background vocals when not signing the lead completed the excitement and uniqueness of the signature ABBA sound. I have yet heard a single cover of ABBA song that can come close to the original - would venture to say that it is because Agnetha's angelic voice was missing. Her stage freight may be real, that only makes her live performances so much more amazing and special. Somehow, my eyes always lock on Agnetha, a person who's said by some not to be known for her live performances, 99% of the time when I watch concert videos of ABBA, and I have feeling I am not alone.

@@danbike9 Agnetha takes the lead vocal in the majority of the songs because she has a more beautiful voice. She sang higher than Frida which is more difficult but they blended well together.
@@Bondsback2325 The lead vocals were equally shared over ABBA's entire catalogue. If we want to be exact, then Frida leads on one more of those actually released but I think we can even it up with 'I'm Still Alive' which, although never studio recorded, could be counted as an ABBA song. And of course, a great many of ABBA hits featured them on joint lead vocals.. 'Higher' being 'more difficult' as got nothing to do with it as Agnetha is a soprano so her comfort zone is above Frida's who in turn can handle the lower notes easier. One could argue that on songs like 'Dancing Queen' Frida is having to actually extend herself more as they both go to those higher notes. Bjorn, Benny and Michael Tretow realised soon enough the possibility's of what they had to work with. One was more punchy' , one was more bassy. Meaning there was both a cutting edge and depth that would fill those tape tracks. They noticed that Frida's voice took on a 'metallic' quality as she pushed to her higher limits. Added to Agnetha's soaring high soprano, it made for an amazing sound which we hear on DQ. They had all the bases covered and that allowed Benny and Bjorn to construct songs requiring huge octave ranges. It's sad (and a little annoying) when threads like this descend into the usual 'my favourite is more important' silliness and especially when false data is used to back up opinions. Because this vocal combination is something truly unique and unmatched. Change any of the two and that incredible sound of them in tandem is gone. The very best groups really do come about naturally, organically and often accidently. A modern pop Svengali and a record label, tying to manufacture a singing combo, would never dream of putting these two together. Agnetha certainly has what we would think as a 'pop voice', although 'pop' is a very broad term. It's lighter, higher and sounds younger, almost girlish at times. Frida, on the other hand, came from a different background. She's almost a throwback to the days of the Big Band chanteuse. Her long experience of improvised Jazz singing as well as operatic training was brought to the 'ABBA sound'. From the outside, they would seem a bad fit. But even though they had different singing styles, their actual voices were incredibly compatible. So much so, that they could blend into a sound that makes the listener think it's one voice, double tracked. This is the famous 'third voice'. One has to appreciate that these two women were solo singers, who had hits in Sweden, before ABBA got going. Their relationships with B & B brought them together in a happy accident. Both had to make the compromises that soloists do when now being part of a group. But they did it for the greater good. This group is well named. Because it truly is a group which is greater than the sum of its four parts. And no manufactured creation has come close to emulating them.
Unfortunately always forgotten when it comes to ABBA = Rutger Gunnarsson and Ole Brunkert. Such a rythm section, same like John Deacon and Roger Taylor in Queen.
Non of those guys a forgotten. Neither is Stig. The person that gets forgotten is Gorel Johnsen-Hanser. You heard that correctly. What you'll find is that there are essentially two types of musicians: Ones who are very good at reproducing other people's music and who tend to be good at reading music, and ones who are good at creating music and tend to be very bad at reading music. Classical musicians had no choice, of course, as there was no other way than to write it down.
@@sophiar6996 Yes, so am i! And also of Bjorn, as apparently he wrote most of the lyrics, AND they were at least mostly written after the music for the song was complete. He confirmed that the lyrics (and even the subject matter) of 'The winner takes it all' was written after the test of the music was already completed. Just astonishing.

Well. Now afterwards, its easier to understand WHY ABBA became a worldwide superband. Björn and Benny where good song wrigter each and one theirself. When they typed together, it became a HIT wonders. At that time, the producer, Stickan Andersson, (The founder of the Polar price awards), had an influence in the pop music world, so he had good opportunitie to launch ABBA globally ... We all know the rest
Agree with Björn and suspect many songwriters feel the same. It's like getting your child to take its first few steps. You might try to help but, after a while, things take off on their own, and your job at that point is to 'putsa', and to guide, take out the kinks etc. Great observation.
The comment at 2:25 can be found with the song, 'laaptmr'. I think 5 or 6 different varieties were recorded. Each had its own beat and sound and feel. In the end B@B choose the one where Frida sang it with a gloomy agony to it. I actually love the disco feel in the version pairing Agnetha's voice, but the lyrics didn't fit.
Спасибо за такой эксклюзивный материал... Это просто нечто. Думаю перевести его на русский целиком, но некоторые слова не понимаю. Не знаете, есть ли где-то версия с субтитрами хотя бы на английском?
Because the girls sang the lead vocals, with a handful of exceptions that Bjorn sang lead on and 1 lone ABBA song that Benny sang lead on. The guys sang background vocals on a lot of the songs, but the girls were the voices of ABBA.
Sadly mono is still alive in many senses. Many clubs, for example, use soundsystems in mono, and not to mention speakers on smartphones :S It's sad, because mono is only half the sound!
Johan Lindbäck, in mono sound both channels are together and you hear both channels and the whole sound. But I agree it sounds bad compared to stereo sound. In smartphone you hear full stereo sound when you use headphones and the sound quality is much better if you use hifi headphones.

How can you not like Benny and Bjorn? The girls, of course, sing well and are beautiful.
Now this is really cool. It’s like a time loop of their lives. To hear all four of them talking shop and singing the songs that made them famous. Talk about a time piece of history for them to look back on. This video is priceless. Thanks you for recording this and letting us viewers enjoy it 🤗❤️❤️❤️❤️
When Agnetha says: "We don't know what will happen in for example '89, and that's what this song is about", I got the chills, because they couldn't have been more right - no-one could have foreseen the collapse of the Soviet Union, the end of the Cold War, the fall of the Berlin Wall or the reunification of Germany!
Just a coincidence, she was paraphrasing the line in that song, which was written in '79, so they wonder what would happen ten years later. So like you say, no one could have foreseen all those things, and that includes all four members of ABBA ;-)
Well, every 10 years (decade) or so some changes usually happen in the world, be that cultural, political, or economic... course there's no way to predict it precisely, but what we do know is that the only "constant" in this world is "change", and hopefully for the better. ;)
For example around 1970 - Vietnam war, 1980 - the end of the disco era / cold war, 1990 - the fall of the USSR and its satellite countries, 2000/1 - 9-11, 2010 - lots of geo-political changes, etc. As you can see some big changes happen every decade or so, and that's what ABBA has "predicted" ;)
@@BillAnt
And the next 10 years...we have BREXIT and the possible collapse of the EU.
@@70AD-user45 < Well with this current Corona virus, not sure where we'll be in the near future, let alone 10 years from now. Hoping for the best.

so much talent in that group
Writing the kinds of songs that they liked to hear is actually why writers write novels. We write the kinds of books we want to read and if other people like the book or in this case the song then the result is a perfect match.
"The Winner Takes it All" is one of their finest, to be sure.
Agnetha's musing about what the world would be like in 1989 is particularly interesting since one of the singular events of that year was the tearing down of the Berlin Wall. It would have been hard to envision that in 1980.
Abba waren halt Seher und ihrer Zeit meilenweit voraus
Agnetha is such a sweetheart
It's also a shame they never wrote more albums together. They split way too early and had much more to offer.
At 7:50, Agnetha, the goddess of 'perfection,' said: "for a change," the singing was very good.
ABBA: Bright Lights Dark Shadows by Carl Magnus Palm
Benny, Bjorn and Michael Tretow, ABBA's engineer and her peers considered Frida a master vocalist.

The important thing to remember about ABBA is the session musicians that played behind them.
i don't have the feeling that abbas music is old from the date and year from the sound it could be music from today.

Wait, did Benny say he doesn't read music??? Surely I misunderstood that!

Mono still existed in 1981? What is Britain doing? I thought mono was dead when Abbey Road was released in 1969!
