I used to make these 50 years ago. (I was really young 😉). I came across your ebook on Etsy and purchased it. Your directions are great and the pictures so helpful. Then your video brings it all home. The hardest part is finding the right egg shells. Don’t ever see any that have a flat bottom on either side or bottom. That said, I have been making my gumpaste critters and royal icing flowers for 4 shells waiting for finishing. Thank you so much! This is so much fun all over again!

Thank you so much for the video! I bought a Wilton kit at a yard sale which had the mold and directions but the directions were very confusing. You made this look like something I could actually do!

These are wonderful. My late mom & a paternal aunt used to make these when I was younger. My aunt's were really something special b/c she made molds in the sizes & shapes of the many, many birds eggs that nested around her home, the farm, & the woods on all sides complete with the hollow sections opened up so she could pipe in a bird in the shape, size, & color of the bird who's shell she was replicating in sugar. Now I pride myself on having nimble fingers (in a previous lifetime or so it feels now that I'm about the age they were when I was the one getting in the way as they worked) but my hands & fingers have/HAD NOTHING ON MY AUNT! She even made chocolate interior eggs then painted the outside using icing or softened/melted candy, which today would be the easy melt & pour stuff only the stuff they used was homemade from scratch - And a damn good candy thermometer. LOL. My aunt's small eggs, esp those she made candied nests for where as close to the real deal egg it'd make you wonder if it was really candy or the decorate shells she made (entire egg) by blowing out the centers. Basically the odd-ball, but beautiful things we look back on & thought were magic until we grew older & forgot the last strands of answers to the universe.
The old ones used to say that the reason babies smiled & laughed was b/c we are born with the knowledge of all the secrets in the Universe but as we get older, we become more jaded & forget.

I made these yesterday with my grandkids (2,6,10 years old) They had a great time decorating . Wish I’d seen this for your excellent tips. I’d made these Decades ago with my children but had only done once since long ago. I make the shells ahead of time but I got them too thick. And I oven baked at 200 after scooping them out. I’ll try your methods next year.

I take it the hardened sugar is not reusable? I live in Washington state very wet and rainy. Could these be dried in oven to speed up the process?

I have used those too for my large eggs. To make an upright egg, use the bottom of the egg mold as your front. Get an egg shaped cookie cutter to press into the egg to make the opening around the flat part that would be the bottom. Follow me?
