The problem with trying that is that you have to get very close to an incredibly intense fire and this carries a high risk of injury. Both of those items have to be placed in just the right way in order to be effective. If the tea towel is too wet this can create a fireball as drips of water enter the pan. If the lid is made of metal then that will conduct heat directly to your hand with the potential of causing burns. The safest way is to dial 999 and get us out to deal with it.
Fire blankets are also risky ones for obvious reasons. Better to have special extinguisher.
It is quite difficult to give an exact time it would take for the oil to cool down as there are a lot of variables involved. If a pan catches fire even if you do turn the heat of the hob off then you should always call the Fire Service. Oil fires are incredibly dangerous and should be left to trained firefighters to put out. The best solution is to never let a pan of oil get to the point of ignition and to always pay attention to it.

I kind of feel like chip pans should stop being manufactured in this day and age. you can get a deep fat fryer for the same price, hell they even make 1 teaspoon oil ones these days. God... i sound like such an adult ¬¬
Why donnt you pour water on it
Eleanor O'Donoghue Have a watch of the video and it will explain all. Basically oil fires burn at such a high temperature that any water put onto it would instantly turn into steam. This creates a fire ball of burning oil which can cause horrendous burns and destruction. Follow the tips in the video and this should never be a problem.

how long does it take for a heating oil(with fire) to settle down? lets say we have a situation like that in our home..we switch of the heater and then what? just w8ing? what if the pan is cuped? wouldnt that crrate more presure and the danger of something to be exploding? i cant w8 for the firefighters.when thing slike that hapen we need to act FAST!
I though using a wet tea towel would solve the issue? Or maybe put the lid back on?
thecodingguys never wet dunk in water wring it out to be damp but not a single drop of water escaping this is why you don't use towels too dry bigger fire too wet bigger fire fire blanket might work though but I wouldn't know the safest way to use one best bet call fire brigade
why 999, and not 911......is 999 what you use in Britan
999 is the number used in the UK to contact the emergency services in an emergency. It is the equivalent of 911 used in America.

Most numbers around the world seem to be 999, 911 or 112. 112 is the European wide number, Australia uses 000, NZ uses 111.
I assume that in most places, it was a matter of which sequences were on reserve or easy to make available at the time the service was initiated. In the USA, back then, anything with a 0 as the second digit was taken as an area code (which no longer applies now that the area code is required for even local calls), and most of the other sequences were for local exchanges, but somehow 911 was made available as the emergency code, ether because it had been set aside from the start, or by changing any 911 local exchanges that existed at the time. Even before that, 411 was reserved for directory assistance, but I don't dare try it now; they'd probably at $10 to my bill.
dont suggest doing what i did i some how puck the pan up without burning myself i lobbed it in the garden stomped on it. wasn't as bad as this it was enough where i had to make a decision to take action or dial 999 this wasn't recent i was 16 im 27 now i cook oven chips now :)
