If you go on Google directions, it will give you good hints for walking or biking between two locations. Sometimes you can put together a commute that is a combination of biking and public transportation. I worked as a software developer/project engineer for several years. I always felt like an eco-friendly commute was helpful to being an effective engineer.

Do NPD engineers also develop machines that will manufacture those products?

In some companies yes but mostly the machine development belongs to a manufacturing engineer or process engineer. It all depends on the company.
