Darius' Words - Epic Iranian Music

- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 18 พ.ค. 2024
- Music & vocals by Farya Faraji. Please note that this isn't reconstructed Achaemenid era music, it's entirely modern Iranian music sung to Old Persian lyrics from that era.
The lyrics are part of the Behistun inscriptions in Kermanshah, Iran, a monumental set of rock reliefs and inscriptions written inside Mount Behistun not long after the coronation of Darius I as emperor of the Achaemenid Empire.
The music uses a variation of Segah, one of our traditional modes and one of our most microtonal ones. The melody modulates between Segah and Shur from time to time. I also employed a technique of playing the tanbour found most often in Eastern Iran and especially Iranian Turkmenistan, the latter region in which I grew up as a child. Iranians in these regions play the dotar using parallel fifths, which gives it a distinct sound to the purely monophonic forms of playing found in other parts of the country. The instruments used are the tar, the dotar, the oud, the ney and the daf drums.
Lyrics in Old Persian:
Thâtiy \ Dâra yavauš \ xšâyathiya \ imâ \ dahyâva \ tyâ \ manâ \ patiyâita \ vašnâ \ Auramazdâha \ manâ \ badakâ \ âhatâ \ manâ \ bâjim \ abaratâ
Hya \ âgariya \ âha \ avam \ u
bartam \ abaram \ hya \ arika \ âha \ avam \ ufrastam \ aparsam
English translation:
King Darius says: These are the countries which are subject to me; by the grace of Ahuramazda they became subject to me; they brought tribute unto me.
Within these lands, whosoever was a friend, him have I surely protected; whosoever was hostile, him have I utterly destroyed. - เพลง

Wow! You have a gift for capturing the royal aspect of traditional music, Farya. I was wondering, could you do a version of this song with you in the video (like your rendition of 'Sah de')? The surroundings in your Orientalism video were so beautiful, btw! Reminds me a little bit of where I grew up.
please check out this channel literary Tamil. Is it possible for you to make a chola themed symphony,if so i would suggest the time period from 980's to 1044.

7/10 needs more duduk
Indeed, not oriental enough 😁
"make it more middle eastern, you know desert camel sabres prince dunes veil dancing head scarf, those kinda vibes"
Exactly! It needs to sound more Persian.
“Zero turbans, zero camels, zero scimitars, zero belly dancers, zero allahu akbars, zero deserts, how can anyone in their right mind call this middle eastern music?”
😂😂😂 Duduk, Sand and Camel 🐫 are missing
Only appropriate to release this banger after that 1.5 hours essay about musical stereotypes.
That's how I found this and I'm glad I did
Me too! I learned a lot
I was probably a bit more aware than the average westerner (I at least knew what an oud was lol) however I still learned a lot. Admittedly I didn't realize how awful Hollywood/western media was in that particular department
random person who just found this channel must be confused like: where duduk!?
Yeah, this is 100% on brand
same here, I am lost for hours now in this great channel :D
I declare that Farya becomes the soundtrack composer of any and all historical movies henceforth.
Hollywood "historical" movies ? That'd be an insult to Farya and his talent
Or... you could go [orientalist progression chord]
no, i would rraderrr go [double harmonic major]

Dear Farya, Your dedication is invaluable. In the face of the severe repression and indifference of the occupying Islamic regime of Iran towards Iran's ancient history, your hard work has prevented the glorious heritage of Iran from being forgotten. I deeply appreciate your music and the masterpieces you create, which keep the history of Iran alive and revive the lost national pride of the Iranian people. Your songs have moved me to tears many times. 😔❤

Came here after seeing the video about Orientalist music. Safe to say that I'm only questioning why this music isn't more present in western media now. The microtonality of the mode used here isn't even that jarring, and in fact I even prefer this flavor over the stereotypical Orientalist kind of music. I could easily see this song replace the usual soundtrack for a climactic moment in a film or game, especially since it has such a strong central hook much like any memorable song.
Catch me humming or singing to this for a while xD
Old Persian is such a beautiful language. Persian as a whole is beautiful, but Old Persian is my favorite

This is what the Scythians heard when Darius the Great marched all the way to the Jaxartes (Syr Darya) river and beyond in modern-day southern Kazakhstan.
As well as the Scythians who were in the northern parts of the black sea
Btw in Avesta Oxus river is called Yakhsha and Jaxartes is called Yakhsha Arta (upper Yakhsha)
Sir darya, the same river where Cyrus the Great died by hands of Thomyris.
@@mennyboy1528 He didn't
There are several different versions of his death
The most logical one was written by Ctesias
@@ramtin5152 and, what's that version of Ctesias?
@@mennyboy1528 Just like Herodotus, Ctesias claims that Cyrus the great died fighting Iranian tribal people except that instead of Massagetaes in central Asia (which as you can see in Cyrus the great conquest maps and Darius the great's inscriptions was already part of the empire), Cyrus fought Iranian people called Derebices/Derbikes reinforced by troops from Indian lands, in Tabaristan (where I live) satrapy of Hyrcania
According to Ctesias, Amoraeus and his two sons, led a rebellion against Cyrus and allied themselves with Indians (probably from Indus valley which a large part of it was conquered by Cyrus and later the rest was conquered by Darius), Cyrus personally went to Hyrcania to crush this rebellion
Hyrcania was way closer to Cyrus capital than central Asia was, and don't forget that Cyrus was 70 years old when he died and couldn't go in the middle of central Asia from the south of modern day Iran at that age back then, therefore it makes more sense if his last battle was actually in Hyrcania which isn't that far
The two armies fought each other in a battle but none of them got the upper hand until the Derbikes elephants (provided by Indians) that were placed in ambush, attacked the Achaemenid cavalry and caused Cyrus to fall off his horse due to the horse panicking
An enemy soldier throwed a javelin at him when he was still on the ground, which mortally wounded him, but, he didn't die right there
The Achaemenid troops quickly reorganised, held their ground and Cyrus Javidan/Immortal guard, shielded and returned him to their camp to get treated while the rest of his men repelled the Derbike army
The first day of the battle seems to have been a tie and probably both armies went back to their camps by nightfall with both sides suffering heavy casualties
One of Cyrus satraps, Amorges, a Saka/Scythian king, came to his aid and reinforced his army with 20,000 Saka cavalry
This helped the Achaemenid army to turn the tides to Cyrus favor and win the battle which resulted in death of the Derbike king, Amoraeus, and both his sons
The Achaemenids lost around 10,000 men while the Derbikes lost 30,000
Cyrus declared Kambiz/Kambujiye/Cambyses, as his successor and died three days later after his final battle due to that javelin wound and was burried in his tomb in Pasargad/Pasargadae
I'll explain why this story makes more sense in my next comment but it's going to be long

As always, amazing stuff Farya.
I'd like to request a future video: What do we know about ancient Iranian music? Such as those from the Achaemenid and/or Sasanian eras.
I understand that this is a difficult topic, as most of the evidence has been lost, but based on the few shards that are available, it would be interesting to hear your perspective!
Kind regards!
Could you do "Volga Boatmen"? Your performances are outstanding!!
Эй ухнем also know as song of the Volga boatmen, is probably one of the better songs for representing the Russians spirit of extreme perseverance and will to push going. I too would like to see Farya make a performance of the song.
At long last the incarnate Achaemenid bas relief has put his own inscription to music

Farya puts this out just as I'm going through this inscription for an exam, I love it. For anyone interested, the lines in question are DB 1.17-19 and 21-22, the first block of text from Darius' inscription at Behistun.
The section from 1:45 to 2:20, and the awesome tanbour solo right after, is unfortunately not long enough. We need a loop of that!
Indtantly liked this piece. Achaemenids finally get the recognition they deserve. Masterful and hard hitting, I love every second of this.
Awesome melody, rhythm, insyrumention and theme! This came at a good time since I'm getting more into the Ancient Near East and Iran.
Perfect as always.Glory to the King Darius and Achaemenids. 𓃬
Cool Arabic desert music bro! Reminds me of Gladiator by Ridley Scott, you know that movie? But I think it needs a little bit of that flute thing, I think it would make it very epic

@@goodfortune4317 In european languages they called us Persians. But, Persians in Iranian languages means Iranians. Persian in English and Greek and others does not mean Persian ethnics. It means Iranians of the greater Iran.
@@goodfortune4317 Yes, you are very right. Also, other countries have the same problem. For example, In Iran people call Hellas (Greece) as Yonan. Yonan is the name of Ionian tribes in western Anatolia not the entire Hellas. Then, Arabs and Turks and Indians also followed Iranians call Hellas as Yonan. China comes from the Qing dynasty in manchu they were not even Han chinese who make the majority of China, but since they formed the first empire every one in Europe called them China, Iran call them Chin, Arabs call then Al-Sin. Indians almost the same. There alot of the same issue everywhere.

I like the atmosphere of this song. It’s calming but also makes me want to dance! I subscribed! I came here from your other video about orientalism. I’ll watch all of it over the week.
Do you plan to tackle any Central, Western, Eastern or indigenous South African music? Africa isn’t really explored much by other musicians unless it’s North Africa.
In a perfect future, I'd definitely tackle all regions, but Africa will certainly take a while. Some of the most sophisticated and complex musical traditions are to be found there and right now I absolutely don't have the knowledge to represent them faithfully

This is cool. I'll definitely be using this and more of your work in my games now.
I wish I could take a time machine and visit Achaemenid Iran. Want to see what Persepolis might have looked like in its glory. 🌟
Amazing music!
Is it possible for you to compose music telling the life of Tigranes the Great, similar to what you did for Augustus, Caesar and others? It would be cool to see, since he has a very interesting life story, starting as a hostage in the Parthian court and, a few years later, becoming the most powerful man east of Rome. I can already imagine how beautiful a symphony it would be with Roman, Persian, and Armenian musical combinations.
I still think how sad it is the conditions of the actual Iran compared to the old Achaemenid empire, good thing Cyrus or Dario cannot see it
بسیار زیبا بود خیلی خوب بود 😍
I know the music is modern, but the lyrics make me feel something strange yet familiar deep inside my bones.
To know my brothers and sisters, Persian and non Persian are all connected by the awe of beautiful music, well, it makes me feel lucky to be alive during a time such as this 🥰
Much love to you the musician and much love to my brothers and sisters in sound, wherever in the world you are! 🌎🥰💕
It’s hard to describe but I don’t think I’ve heard this in my life. Something about it tickles my ears in such a weird but good way!
You're one of very few people making quality historical music, especially from the middle east.
The timing is crazy
Here from the Orientalism video. Thank you so much for the clarification in the description and pinned comment :D
I would really like to see you compose music from the Iliad/Odyssey. Particularly the monumental parts, such as when Achilles defeated Hector or the games in Patroclus' honor.
Considering this is modern Iranian music but sung in old Persian. What do you think the reaction would be if you showed this to an Achaemenid noble?
They'd probably be confused, and knowing the reaction most people have to music that sounds unusual to them, they'd call it terrible and say I have no talent lol
Uhh excuse me, I must be lost. I’m looking for a double harmonic somewhere…?
