I am going out on a limb here. It's quite possible that how words were pronounced would eventually arrive at its spelling. A garret ( pronounced garrot in the islands) is a floor consisting of open space at the top of a house just below the roof often used for storage. I am saying this to say around the era of this song, it could depicted the then lifestyle of wealthy persons who built these colonial types of homes and possible used these upper rooms as additional quarters for their servants. I presumed that if these servants were not allowed to mingle with guests during their parties, they would possibly enjoy themselves somewhat by dancing up above and out of sight. This is just my suggestion and in no way am I rewriting or inventing history. Dancing was, in that era and still is today a great stress relief. Ok please don't bite my head off for this comment. Give your spin on the song islanders. I am from Trinidad.

Just heard an interview on Gayelle TV Trinidad with Lord Nelson
He said the name for the song was derived from the era when islanders who did not have US STATUS were know as GARROT … he also said that during a carnival he sang it informally as the leader of masqueraders on the streets as they were dancing and bouncing to the music …. Hence the name “GARROT BOUNCE” …. It was eventually recorded with live musicians and Calypsonian Sparrow took the song to Trinidad and it was well received … When Nelson subsequently came to Trinidad he was overwhelmed by the success of the song

Thank you for showing your interest in this particular Lord Nelson recording. I have always wondered about the lyrics and title. The descriptive suggestion re: the Garrot/Garret puzzle that you came up with does make very good sense to me. I think you are exactly correct with the explanation you have set out for this calypso. I have tried several times to possibly transcribe from the disc in an effort to get more understanding of the story line but as with many of the older recordings I have not managed it. I`m still looking and if I ever manage to get hold of the lyrics I will post them up.
      Regards GJ

And what does the "Lord" say? Did anyone think to ask him. After all it is his calypso and my anthem.
