The 307 (I own one) is an easy car to work with, many things are user-friendly, but not the spare wheel for sure. I removed mine for inspection after watching this video, it looked alright, put it back, but it looks I haven't placed it back properly (the problem was with the cover of the car jack) and it fell down once on the road. It was loud! Then a friend helped me to place it back properly, but then I used it again for a flat tyre and it is still in my trunk now. Time to put it back again. Stupid design for sure.
But thank you for the explanation. Helpful :)

I have a 307 SW aswell, that mechanism has a fault. The cable you see in the video is lowered and raised with the help of 2 gears, sometimes those gears will smash the cable into pieces and the wheel will be stuck (I had that problem). If you can hear and feel skipping of gears and grinding most probably the main cable is already stuck, if that is the case and your wheel is still in the highest position possible, the only way to remove the wheel will be by using pliers to cut the cable from underneath the back of the car. If that is not the case and everything went smoothly when you lower and remove the wheel make sure there is still some force pulling the cable down, otherwise it could go out of aligment and get smashed during raising of the wheel.
IMPORTANT: If you are going to lower the wheel and you plastic piece covering the bolt for the wrench is broken you will need to find a way to grab whatever is left and pull it up (you can use self screwing bolts) It's not appearant on the video but there is a 2-nd cable attached with that plastic piece and it is holding a hook (the thing attaching the cable to the plastic box), if you do not do this most probably the main cable will be smashed by the gears.

    What a faf!
Imagine having to do this on a rainy/cold dark night beside a high road or middle of a hard terrain!
What about the less able people ie: ladies, older etc... ?
THUMBS ALL THE WAY DOWN for Peugeot.
Thanks for the demo though! You must have saved lives by doing this.

That's why when the system is properly used and in good working order. It's so much easier than most other systems!! Yep, surprising isn't it?!
Older people, ladies, etc. will have a big help from this system, IF they KNOW how to use it.
Point being. Knowing how to do it, you'll have to lift the tire just once! To set it on the hub and that's it! What about that for the old people, the ladies, etc. ;-)
Just because you watched on YT a poorly used and explained system. DO NOT skip using a proper manual... ;-)

The very slightly easier way to remove the wheel is to unhook the winch wire from the jack storage box. Once tension is off the wire it should be possible to push the "hook" hidden on the end of the wire in and off centre then just pull it out.
Also check the winch works annually and lubricate it. The first time I needed to use it it jammed completely part way down, All I had to do was cut the wire so I could remove the wheel and jack. It only took about an hour . Then I could change the punctured tyre and spend a couple of hundred on a replacement winch. Brilliant Puegeot engineering.

You can remove the wire without opening the box. Just release the wire until the wheel touches the ground, once the wire is no longer tensioned you can remove it with ease. Great car Peugeot 307 sw

      Hi Miron,
      Thanks for the comment!
I tried to lower down the wheel completely at the beginning. This is where the "5 minutes later" text appears. I turned the key in one direction and observed how the wheel releases (moves downwards) from the car. The problem is that when the wheel went about half way down it suddenly started moving up again without me changing the torque direction. My release mechanism is most probably rusty or simply old. I moved the wheel up and down couple of times before I reached the level shown in the video. Unfortunately I could not go lower then that.
It is a good thing you pointed that out and I believe that your comment will be useful for people watching.
      Thanks again!

Hi mate! The winch is a common problem. The cable gets twisted up inside. It is very important for the cable to be tensioned when you are releasing it and when you lift as well, othervise the wire gets jammed like in your case. Normaly the cable is long enough not only to realease the whell to the ground but you should be able almost to pull it completely out (at my 307 is quite difficult because the towbar). Please carry on to be always oiled, this will slow down the cable grinding proces, it is a very squeamish mechanism, risky to service and a replacement is around £100. I'am looking forward to hearing good news from you.

Very special way of hiding a spear wheel. The wheel will rust and it is smart to check it now and then and remove any attack of rust and repaint the spots. Or even better, get a used wheel in aluminium at a car demolishing station. May be it is smart to put it in a a solid plastic bag before putting it in place. just remember to put a couple of draining holes in the bag, in case humidity manages to enter it.

C4 GP has the same crappy system installed. No obvious way to release it and can just imagine the fun trying to do this in the dark by the side of the road. I was lucky the tyre didn't deflate until I was home and was able to spend time indoors in a nice warm room trying to find out how to release the rotten thing. The old citroen system was a metal holder that was hinged - much better. Why in the name of sanity would they go backwards to such a rubbish system? Thanks for the video - it has been a life saver.

Forgot to mention on the video!
The lower part of the plastic box is in fact a "wheel chock".
    www.google.com/search?ei=i5ISX9rFFe6EwPAPrNyA2Ak&q=wheel+chock&oq=wheel+wedge+block&gs_lcp=CgZwc3ktYWIQARgAMgQIABBHMgQIABBHMgQIABBHMgQIABBHMgQIABBHMgQIABBHMgQIABBHMgQIABBHUABYAGDCigJoAHACeACAAQCIAQCSAQCYAQCqAQdnd3Mtd2l6&sclient=psy-ab
Turn the box upside down and use the sloped part as a wheel chock, to lock the tire on the opposite corner, that you're replacing.
So read your user manual, learn how to use the equipment beforehand. I'm 100% sure you'll not want to learn at night during a rain storm in the middle of nowhere..."How to change a tire" (safely). LOL 😂

    • @isitfixedyet891

      Hi Critchley999,
Take a look at this video: th-cam.com/video/mFwIIy2meGc/w-d-xo.html
The reason that it is problematic is most likely the WINCH. The winch gets old and the wire inside gets stuck more and more often. That is why you cannot unwind the whole wire operating the lever. With well functioning winch you should be able to lower down the spare wheel and drag it from under the car without the need of hooking it from the wire interface. When the tire is under the car it is difficult to remove the wire interface as you have seen on my video. With good winch you wouldn't need to do it under the car.
      Hope it helps
Let me know if this got any clearer.

      @critchley999 6 ปีที่แล้ว

Thanks for your reply and the other video which we've watched too and apparently (according to Mr. C. as I know nothing about these things) it was the slide-off cover where the jack was that was old, warped and jammed and caused him to give up trying to get it back on. Luckily my son borrowed the car and needed the boot space so he put it back where it should go ..haha! It's not a great system though, I don't think x Am very grateful for your information x

I bought my 307 sw 3 months ago and yesterday watched this video, because I wanted to check my spare tyre to make sure its OK if something happens. The wheel was fine, I cleaned it a bit and today I tried to lift it back. But it looks like I haven't placed the wire end properly and while driving the spare wheel fell down along with the box. Glad no car crashed at it, I took it back, but while driving with 80 km/h you can imagine how awful it was, especially the sound. It even removed a bit my back bumper and broke a piece of it, but that's alright. I have put the wheel back with the help of a friend, just hoping it's okay this time. So a double check if everything's alright is always good. And this system definitely sucks.

This is something very similar to my Citroen C4 Grand Picasso. Except, the system demonstrated here is actually a lot easier and straightforward! The most useless idea for a spare wheel placement system I have ever seen. I would hate to try and change the wheel in the rain on a dark main road. I had to use my user manual on a snowy night to figure out how to take the wheel out, and put it all back together again. The box that holds the jack is worse than useless.

May have to remove and dismantle to see if it can be fixed. The tyre should have been in a well inside the car. The rest of the car is fine, compares to other makes such as Ford, Renault and Vauxhall I have owned or had as company vehicles.
