When we realised Anyone But You wasn't just set in Sydney, Australia, but actually around the Northern Beaches, we were shocked! It's a lot of fun to have a good new movie actually filmed and set where one of us grew up :)

Actually, that spider really DID bite Sydney Sweeney. Glen and the crew thought her screams, were over-acting. 😂

The problem that I have with some rom coms or any movie in general is that they spell everything out because they think we are idiots.
But I do miss a good romantic comedy.

So this movie is loosely based on Much Ado About Nothing, and the dumb overhearing scene is basically pulled straight from that script. Although in the play, they dont figure out that it's a setup.

Yeah I didn’t get the confusion. He was referencing their dynamic and letting her know how loved she is by him. The whole point of the romantic gesture was the love confession. Enjoyed most of the reaction but was confused by that, it was a great scene between Bea & Ben, finally being honest about how they feel for one another.

    • @Bubaiel
      @Bubaiel หลายเดือนก่อน

I think they didn’t like it because it was sort of like putting a one sized fits all approach on a scene that should feel more personal to them? Like sure he took the helicopter and stuff but the whole “I love your ___ I love your ___” public confession thing has been done so many times in romcoms that it felt like a cop out and perhaps a little unsatisfying because of it? Idk that’s my guess but I didn’t mind it however I understand why they thought it could’ve been better.

34:36 - actually i'd just read somewhere that us aussies are lucky - our coffee prices are CHEAP in comparison to other countries: a flat white in sydney is $4.50, $5.10 in new zealand, $7.43 in italy, and $10.32 in switzerland! so definitely consider myself lucky as a sydney-sider, especially when our coffee is arguably some of the best

I often end up really liking a side character in these types of film, but the two main characters were easily my favorites. However, I found his ex's new fling's comments about going "Full Titanic" the funniest part of the film. Their meet cute was great. I am curious what about her intrigued him. Was it really just using her random legal knowledge in her "argument" with the barista? Unlike the side characters, the two main characters' decisions/reactions regarding their relationship, for the most part, made sense. I normally am very entertained when love interests bicker, but them being so immediately intense with their pettiness threw me a little. I do 100% support her stealing his cookie though. 😆 I mentioned this in the premiere, but I kinda hate her parents. The film tried to play them off as meddling parents that were concerned, but they just seemed very manipulative and controlling to me. The other side characters, including her ex, were thankfully okay characters.
I really enjoyed the film , but there was something off for me. I wish I could explain it better, but the vibe went out sync a few times for me. I sure that I will rewatch it in the future though.

About the coffee, I'm sure the entire world knows about Cuban coffee. In south Florida, there are literally 200 different places where they sell Cuban coffee. You should watch, I believe it is Carlos Mencia, who tells the story of his first time in Miami, when he bought Cuban coffee. They served him the little coaster, and he told the woman serving him that he wanted a big cup of it. He didn't sleep for about 24 hours after that. But hey, I may be wrong. Maybe Sam and Maria have been to Miami before. Maybe they are part Cuban by association at this point. Maria may have the swivel hips for the dancing.

I didn't understand the cake scene until I watched the movie again. She apologized because when they were saying "you effed it up," back and forth that was actually Klonopin, the dog's, command phrase for grabbing his toy. Because the parents came at her about school she let go of the cake and Margaret had to put the cake down on her own. Which, unfortunately, ended up being right on the dog's toy he was "commanded" to fetch by Bea and Ben arguing with one another.
On top of the school issue, she didn't want to come out. She was apologizing for her part in the cake and the wedding being "ruined."

My Husband & I Just Watched This Movie On Netflix Last Night!!!!! We Loved It!!!!! It Was Great To Watch A Really Fun Rom Com And Be Able To Snuggle And Cuddle Up With My Husband Of 10 1/2 Years And Be Able To Laugh And Smile And Watch A Light Hearted Movie!!!!! But I Watched All Of The Interviews With Glen Powell And Sydney Sweeney About This Movie And Actually Found Out That The Scene With The Spider On The Cliff Was 100% Absolutely Positively Real, That Was Not Planned...It Was An Actual Australian HUNTSMAN Spider And It Bit Sydney Sweeney And They Had To Call In The Emergency Services People And She Was On Meds To Get The Poison From The Spider Out Of Her System!!!!! Also, The Scene At The End At The Sydney Opera House, They Said That When They Arrived At The Sydney Opera House To Film That Scene That There Were Tons Of Secret Service All Over The Place And They Realized At Some Point That The Secret Service Were Not There For Them But It Happened To Be That BARACK OBAMA Was There That Day And They Got The Presidential Seal Of Approval After He Watched Them Film That Scene, It Truly Happened To Be That They Were In The Right Place At The Right Time!!!!! That Was Absolutely Not Planned Either!!!!! Everything In This Movie Just Ended Up Happening By Accident!!!!!

Cheers! I love your intelligent and fun reaction video for this movie!!! Thanks also for the insights about Australia in relation to this film. I have seen “Anyone but You” several times-loving it more and more, and here are some cool things to also notice in this romcom for this new era and so popular with Gen Z (and a super hit making over $219.2 million worldwide with just a $25 million budget):
    1. The director Will Gluck put in Easter eggs for “Easy A”: Ojai on Ben’s T-shirt that he puts on after Bea leaves his home, and many shots of oranges. Gluck previously directed “Easy A”, which was set in Ojai, California. And included numerous scenes with oranges. “Easy A” also features a Natasha Bedingfield song, “Pocket Full of Sunshine”, with “Unwritten” being the bop for “Anyone but You”. The director says that the use of “Unwritten” was not an intentional Easter egg though.
    2. Halle tells Bea at the beach that their mom-played by Rachel Griffiths-thinks of herself as Australian since arriving there. The actress is actually Australian (from Melbourne) in real life.
    3. There is an NPR Easter egg: the “Hidden Brain” psychology podcast playing on the airliner as Bea looks for an open lavatory.
    4. The evocative music score for the film was co-composed by Este Haim of the music group HAIM. Este’s sister Alana stars in the movie “Licorice Pizza”, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson (famous for films like “There Will Be Blood”).
    5. When Dermot Mulroney says, “As they say in the home country, ‘abbondanza [abundance in Italian]’”, this is one of many references to the Shakespeare play “Much Ado about Nothing” on which the plot of this romcom is based. Mulroney plays Leo Messina in this movie, whose counterpart in the play is Leonato, the governor of Sicily.
    6. Glen Powell’s parents appear in the airliner cookie scene. His father is sleeping in the seat next to Ben. His mother is lying across the aisle. She raises her eye mask and gives a side eye glance at Bea, who is doing sex-like gymnastics above a sleeping Ben. She then puts her eye mask back on, to mind her own business. Glen’s parents regularly have cameos in his movies.
    7. At the climactic and romantic Sydney Opera House scene, there is a nice callback: Bea tells Ben, “Are you going to kiss me now?” At the beginning meet cute cafe scene, Bea says, “Are you going to ask me out now?”
    8. The scene where GaTa trains the border collie to attack the toy fox can be considered a “Chekhov’s Dog” device: it foreshadows Klonopin (named for a panic attack drug!) knocking over the wedding cake…

As a fan of the play this movie was based on, Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing, I couldn’t sit through this rom com if I’m honest. There were so many easily fixed plot holes. The conflict felt forced from the moment she left the morning after and ‘didn’t know why’ (she could have gone to get coffee as a reference to how they met and THEN returned to overhear Ben. Way less flimsy) and I don’t think the screenwriters understood what is so timeless about the Beatrice and Benedict (Bea and Ben) dynamic. Comparing the banter back and forth between protagonists in this movie, to Kat and Patrick in 10 Things I Hate About You, which is a modern take on Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew, the latter was done with a lot more skill and understanding of the source material and the age old enemies to lovers trope. I appreciate the effort to bring the romcom back but this didn’t do it for me sadly.

I like Brian Brown from Breaker Morant (1980) and the tv mini-series A Town Like Alice (1981).
