Don't wait until spring to start working your land and getting it ready to plant.. Start cleaning and work (cleaning and clearing) your land before winter and during winter if the ground isn't frozen. Make a plan as to what you want to accomplish and have ready for planting come February - March .. Get your composting bins made as soon as possible so you can start composing the debris from. cleaning up your land so it will have time to break down before spring time. Also you can start a small fall garden (veggie patch) now if you have a nice clean area for one. Once you get your land cleaned and cleared it will be easier to take care of . Also Y'all need to start now collecting wood for the winter.. go into your wooded area and see if there is any dead trees and any that might have already fell that y'all could cut up and store for the winter time.. If you cut a tree that is still alive for wood burning for the winter it takes a good year to a year and a half for the wood to be completely dry for inside wood stove/burners/fireplace usage. What does the locals say about their winter ? How cold does it get, does it snow there etc.? It's exciting seeing that your channel is growing so fast . Keep up the good work on making your videos , one day it will start paying off..
Thanks for all the tips 😊 we are doing little bits to our land every day but hope to get a good start with clearing when things start to die back this autumn. Already started composting in heaps but would be nice to get bins sorted soon too 😊 lots of work to do before spring but we are sure it will all be so worth it. No snow here and not as cold as Ireland in winter but lots of rain 🌧 thanks so much for watching!
@@BaileysHomestead If you want to have cabbages, brussels sprouts, brocolli, turnips, radish, spinach, "nabos & grelos" etc... this winter to last till Easter time, now is the time to prepare the soil. Choose a sunny patch not far from water, clear the top of large weeds but dig in any dry vegetation for compost. You can dig / till manually with a hoe that looks like a fork with 2 thick teeth. Note: farmers don't like to lend tools, buy your own at local market. After tilling, level the soil and plant your cabbage plugs in rows. Plugs are sold in all local markets now, you can choose ten of each variety or more. Water generously after planting and each day (or second day) afterwards if the weather is very dry. Sometimes the dew of the night provides enough moister. Once the rain comes, you won't need to do anything else. If the weeds grow very quickly and look like growing over the little cabbages, just do a little hoeing, over the surface between the cabbages to destroy the weeds. Turnips, radishes, spinach, nabos, grelos are different in the sense that you don't buy plugs: you sow / spread the seed directly on damp soil and mix it a little with the top soil, just 1 or 2 cm deep. For better results, give the prepared soil a good watering beforehand, let it rest till the next day, sow the seeds and leave. Next days if the top soil looks dry, water it with a watering can or the shower function of a hosepipe, the idea is that the watering should be like rain and does not disturb the seeds. You'll also need to put some scarecrows in the form of metalic ribon (the kind we use for gifts) or some shiny things, because the birds will eat all the seedlings as soon as they sprout. Moth balls wrapped in paper will also help against wild rabbits as they stink. Watch your greens germinate and grow. After it starts raining, you don't need to do anything else (or maybe just some weding) and you'll start harvesting from December till Easter.

It’s nice that you can grow so many different fruits and vegetables there. I have found it helpful to compost all of our food scraps, egg shells and coffee grounds to enrich our garden soil. It’s helpful to build raised beds with a drip system to make gardening a bit easier and more efficient in terms of water use. We added a wild flower meadow and added companion flowers directly into the garden to encourage pollination of the fruits and vegetables which was helpful. We also added a native mason bee hive on our property which has also been helpful. I am looking forward to seeing the remodel on your kitchen and seeing what you do with your outdoor area to turn it into a nice garden.
It sounds like you have a fantastic set up! We have a long way to go but working a little bit at it everyday and enjoying getting tips from others! Hopefully have some raised beds and compost ready for planting early spring! Thank you for watching and commenting 💚😊

I enjoy your channel….
You are crazily skilled with some stuff….you can easily make a ton of money there as a skilled craftsmen part time.
BTW, i was born in Portugal and live in the USA.
It hurts me seeing how beautiful Portugal is and i am living here in the States.
Not to say that the USA is not beautiful….
But the distances here between beautiful things is enourmous….
Whereas, Portugal is beautiful all over and is a small country.
You guys seem very happy….
Congrats.
You are so right, there is beauty everywhere in Portugal, we love it here! 😊💚 Best wishes to you in the US!
After having said that…..time to have two or three kids who will have dual citizenship.
Get busy already.
Portugal needs more people like both of you.
