That's why he asked "did you kill her" Afterwards jxng carries this moment all thruout her next life, thinking xw killed in her past life. But later in the story she starts to realize she might have misunderstood the past life xw's intention behind giving her that dagger.

There's always an answer for everything, except for death. Sometimes life gives us a lemon. It's up to us to make a lemonade from it.
In a time and place where horrendous creative torture, prison humiliation, and slow painful poisons exists, I guess suicide is the least painful way to go out. In this story, she believes she'll be killed or deposed, and a deposed empress who everyone hates will eventually suffer humiliating torture and death. And she exchanged her life to beg for someone else.
