Just finished reading all of the original 60s incarnation issues. I was surprised at how fun and inventive they were, since DC's Silver Age titles typically aren't the most engaging to me. But Doom Patrol is the exception to that.
The introuduction, the little of their backstory, the chemistry, the acting, the character development was way better than I expected ir to be.. And since they are going to get their own series I'm much excited

Love the obscure characters in the DC universe. Funny how much Harrison Wells in Flash season 1 could've basically been Niles Caulder instead since they are functionally the same character (wheelchair-bound, faking the paraplegia, responsible for the creation of the metahumans, etc.). Would you make one of these videos for an even obscurer DC team, the Challengers of the Unknown? I'd absolutely love that. Need more information on them out there.

I feel like your video essay would make a lot more sense if the images you used went along with your voice over (i.e., showing a picture of the character you're talking about When you're talking about them, because it can be a little hard to keep up) but other than that, very informative about the history of the Doom Patrol!
I've always admired the Doom Patrol, but I felt DC never really utilized them as well as they could. Morrison tried to, but even that had to end. Hopefully, this new Young Animal line of comics will bring them back into the light and DC will finally realize their potential.

He never knew that was going on within her, just like maybe there's other universes that we don't know about...like in a gyro - pronounced hero, as in a play on words. That's why it's important to know it's a gyro, not a burrito.

Yeah, I recently got in to this team and have at least one comic run of each. I have a trade of the classic Doom Patrol, two trades of Grant Morrison's run and the first trade of Gerald Way's run and hoping to get the second sometime next month. Its a pretty cool team with interesting members and it goes from goofy, comic book silliness to bizzarre, mind shattering craziness and I think that is where the Doom Patrol found its niche. From everything I looked in to about the Doom Patrol, it seems that when you try to turn them into a normal hero team, they fail. They can't be normal heroes, they have to face wacky, crazy threats like Animal Vegetable Mineral Man or the Scissor Men who cut people out of reality or an alien personality within one of their members, Crazy Jane or a team of villains with wacky crazy powers, one of which is literally a dude who is responsible for every inconvenience in the world. They need to be weird and fight off weird threats, that being said I do kinda miss Elastigirl being a part of the team. I get that she is a bit more 'normal' when compared to the other members but she was a founding member yet she typically gets shafted. Robot Man is the mainstay of the team and some variation of Negative Man stays as well but Elastigirl is forgotten most of the time and that makes me sad. Hell, from what I have seen of her in recent years it seems she is freaky enough to be with them now since she is I think made out of protoplasm now and isn't really a normal human being. Saw a panel where Animal Vegetable Mineral Man cut her face up and there was no blood, skull or anything, it just looked like he cut in to a rubber doll before Elastigirl reformed.
You forgot to mention that back during Grant Morrison's run with the comic (at least I think so?) it was revealed that it was the Chief who was responsible for all the horrible things that happens to the team because he thought that tragedy is what makes good heroes and so he set things in motion that caused the team to get their powers and ruined their lives and make them join the Doom Patrol.
I'd like to see them as more of an animated series, sometimes involving people from the weirder corners of the DC Universe--folks like Blue Devil, Ambush Bug, Bwana Beast, Animal Man, and so on. To this day, Cliff Steel and Larry Trainor (sp?) are probably the most psychologically interesting members of any comic books anywhere.

I never know what to make of the Doom Patrol. In a Teen Titans story line, the Chief manipulated the Doom Patrol to become a team again and had wanted Beast Boy to join them. I thought the Chief started the team for his own means. I don't remember the whole plot and it got me frustrated because they were taking away one of my favorite characters.
Comics required pretty extensive lead-time due to newsstand and printer restrictions and postal regulations back then. Especially in the case of non-anthology titles because they needed to be freshly indexed. 3 months wouldn't be enough time to come up with a rip-off. As others have mentioned, Doom Patrol do owe a conceptual debt to Fantastic Four. I wouldn't call any of them rip-offs, though.
The Doom Patrol died because of a fan vote similar to Jason Todd's. It was done by mail though, not 1-900#s. The writer had nothing to do with decision to kill them off.
I thought the Doom Patrol episode of Titans was awesome. I can't wait for the new standalone show. Robot Man's acting/voice acting really left an impression on me. I'm excited to see more of them.

I've been collecting comics since the late '60s and was a big Doom Patrol fan. The concept of ordinary people effectively being forced into superhero roles, pretty much involuntarily, fascinated me. I wasn't a fan of the '90s reboot until Grant Morrison took over. His run was pure genius.

And since they are exploring alternate-universe Wells in the Flash, there could've been an alternate Niles Caulder who eventually makes the Doom Patrol. But season 1 Harrison being Eobard in disguise still is so much like Niles Caulder in his personality, mentoring, and his role in the DC universe at large.

Doom Patrol came first, typically that is how things are though Marvel has some firsts as well like Namor coming before Aquaman and Wasp being before Bumble Bee and the general appearance and aesthetic of Hulk came out first which Solomon Grundy started to emulate.
I've always liked the original DOOM PATROL: The Chief, Robotman, Negative Man, and Rita. So much has been done to them that's not been very good. I liked the Classic Original Run and maybe some of Morrison's. John Byrne's run... which I thought was going to be great... was a big let down. I didn't want to see Nudge, Grunt, and a bunch of other characters I had little interest in seeing. I thought Byrne's art would be perfect but he was poorly focused on what I wanted to see. Morrison did some fun stuff but it was a little too far out there for me and sometimes the art wavered. Way's stuff -- so far --- is 'clickin'... I want to see the core members... and if Gerald Way is going to add Flex and Danny the street.... ok. I just don't want this team over-loaded with too many bad, weak characters that take away from the real Doom Patrol. Those are the guys (and gal... ah, Girl .... like in Elasti-Girl) that I want to see at the center of this book. Derington's art is looking very good ... as is Gerald Way's approach to story-telling. Umbrella Academy was a treat to read. I'm hoping this book stays on track for a long time. (which is hard to see happen in today's comics.) Glad the Doom Patrol is back. Already dreaming of a 60-page Doom Patrol Annual next summer with Derington doing the art... in a classic story about the D.P. Oh, and I would love to see the return of General Immortus .... ...and, in a separate story... The Brotherhood of Evil: The Brain, Madame Rouge, ... and an intelligent gorilla with a machine gun in a french beret... Monsieur Mallah.!! Geeesh.!! Why not.!!??
pious83 I never really got in to new 52. or rebirth for that matter. don't get me wrong, I love DC but they haven't been the same since flashpoint. and in my opinion the only good thing to come out of the new 52 was the court of owls. and about animal man not being around for a while; well it's always been DC's nature to shy away from they're weirder or dumber aspects of their universe. which is why I love grant morrison because his signature is to take the dumbest shit from a character's history and just make it work. he did for animal man, doom patrol, and all star superman.
pish posh I'd really recommend picking up both Swamp Thing and Animal Man's runs in trade. Being fringe characters they aren't really connected to any other book besides themselves.
The fantastic 4 is alot similar to doom patrol then the x men elastigirl/ mr fantastic the thing/ robot man human torch and invisible women are based off negative man and the main villain for the fantastic 4 is Dr. Doom

pious83 Sorry I didn't know it was a big spoiler I didn't read that comic and I knew it from the first time I heard of the Doom Patrol myself, I just think that was a significant difference from Just DC's Professor X and was one of the only things that made me drawn to the Doom Patrol as a comic back when I first heard of the comic.

I love the first; Doom Patrol which included the first members, Robert Man, Negative man and Elastic Girl, along with the Chief.
Not, feeling the new team at all give me the classic team, any day...
Did anybody realize in the Teen Titans cartoon it was the Doom Patrol villains that got all of the Titans villians together and nearly defeated the Titans?

Doom Patrol came first, typically that is how things are though Marvel has some firsts as well like Namor coming before Aquaman and Wasp being before Bumble Bee and the general appearance and aesthetic of Hulk came out first which Solomon Grundy started to emulate.

I've always liked the original DOOM PATROL: The Chief, Robotman, Negative Man, and Rita. So much has been done to them that's not been very good. I liked the Classic Original Run and maybe some of Morrison's. John Byrne's run... which I thought was going to be great... was a big let down. I didn't want to see Nudge, Grunt, and a bunch of other characters I had little interest in seeing. I thought Byrne's art would be perfect but he was poorly focused on what I wanted to see. Morrison did some fun stuff but it was a little too far out there for me and sometimes the art wavered. Way's stuff -- so far --- is 'clickin'...
I want to see the core members... and if Gerald Way is going to add Flex and Danny the street.... ok. I just don't want this team over-loaded with too many bad, weak characters that take away from the real Doom Patrol. Those are the guys (and gal... ah, Girl .... like in Elasti-Girl) that I want to see at the center of this book. Derington's art is looking very good ... as is Gerald Way's approach to story-telling.
Umbrella Academy was a treat to read.
I'm hoping this book stays on track for a long time. (which is hard to see happen in today's comics.)
Glad the Doom Patrol is back. Already dreaming of a 60-page Doom Patrol Annual next summer with Derington doing the art... in a classic story about the D.P.
Oh, and I would love to see the return of General Immortus ....
...and, in a separate story... The Brotherhood of Evil: The Brain, Madame Rouge, ... and an intelligent gorilla with a machine gun in a french beret... Monsieur Mallah.!!

Batwoman is supposed to show up in Mother Panic, for example.

Morrison's Run, easily available in Trade and the new Young Animal run which is upto issue 3 currently.
yeah definitely grant morrison's doom patrol. he wrote 90's animal man so if you like that you'll like his doom patrol.
pish posh So sad Animal Man has all but disappeared from DC lately. His book and Swamp Thing were the best part of New 52.
pious83 I never really got in to new 52. or rebirth for that matter. don't get me wrong, I love DC but they haven't been the same since flashpoint. and in my opinion the only good thing to come out of the new 52 was the court of owls.
and about animal man not being around for a while; well it's always been DC's nature to shy away from they're weirder or dumber aspects of their universe. which is why I love grant morrison because his signature is to take the dumbest shit from a character's history and just make it work. he did for animal man, doom patrol, and all star superman.
pish posh I'd really recommend picking up both Swamp Thing and Animal Man's runs in trade. Being fringe characters they aren't really connected to any other book besides themselves.
The fantastic 4 is alot similar to doom patrol then the x men elastigirl/ mr fantastic
the thing/ robot man human torch and invisible women are based off negative man and the main villain for the fantastic 4 is Dr. Doom

pious83 true but marvel still copied dc. Its been said marvel hired spies to get ideas from dc while they were making doom patrol. It cant be a coincidence that both teams are very similar
