  • How exciting rowing races are can be forgotten if we take everything for granted. This race had it all: excitment, great technique and wonderful style.

For information, the french guy who collapse, have stayed for one hour unconscious after the race. it wasn't for the "drama". I would have hope an analysis of these guys! Thank you for your job!! Keep doing it!

That was also my impression. The term drama was not meant for him as he collapsed on the finish line. That was one of the very rare true cases. Poor guy.

Please focus on the catch and the stern too in the last 500m. In some strokes round the catch the Dutch stern goes back wards, the Italian jumps a bit, where as the czech make the boat run the most undisturbed. Could it be the team with the least negative acceleration round the catch that makes the boat win?
This is to discuss the negative accleration at the catch. Not to be negative towards a specific nation. All three teams row extremely well.
Some may think I am wrong. Please keep it positive.
An example on "making the boat run" at the catch, is the M4X B-final from the WC 2019, where the Norwegians just moves through, like the Czech does here.

The Dutch are Olympic champs in this boatclass. Using more upper body the shopping start "diving" at the moment of the recovery ( by weight displacement).

Hello from New Zealand could you do the olympics men’s eight possibly?

Hello to New Zealand. It is on my list as soon as the Olympic Channel puts the footage on YT without geoblocking.

I definitely agree with your assessment of the quality of this crew but think it can be misleading to talk about momentum and use of the upper body as if they are the causes of good boat run when instead they are often the outcome.
To my eye the Czech crew have better acceleration than the other crews because of their patience through the front turn to get connected before they drive the seat. If you are patient through the front turn and get the seat connected to the handle before driving the legs then you have a good base to accelerate from. This allows you to engage the upper body to accelerate through the back half of the stroke. If you drive too hard off the front before getting connected the acceleration has nowhere to go and there is an apparent lack of momentum.
Obviously not disagreeing with you, I just think it’s important to differentiate between cause and effect and in my experience the appearance of momentum and the ability to effectively engage the upper body is a product of how the front turn is taken.

Do you think that applying more than one technique in a race in different stages of the race would be a smart idea? (e.g. the dutch way in the first 500-1000, then transitioning to a more upper body movement throughout the 1000-1500, and finishing the last 500 with a sprint with whatever way is suitable depending on the situation).

Is it possible for you to do analysis of Olympic rowing or is there a whole bunch or broadcast rights that is just a massive problem

For now this is not possible. If Olympics puts it in YT without Geoblocking this may be possible

Согласен с вами у немецкой сборной вылетает первый номер из за наклона корпуса в захвате, он как будто капает веслами, а голанцы не достаточно делают мах спиной из за этого нет плотности и ускорения в конце гребка.

I like your comments about rowing style very much. I think the Dutch stroke with no lean-back is a mistake. There is not enough measurements done with NK force measuring oarlocks to correctly evaluate the Dutch stroke.
PS What I do not like about your comments is your authoritarian comments about not lying back at the end of a race. You simply do not know how deep people go. You may pretend you do but you don’t. So please do not comment on that. It’s a free country and you can comment on anything you want, I just don’t like the authoritarian attitude you display, and your rationalizing your comments doesn’t make it better. But that is just my opinion.

Unfortunatelly this is just one more or less tiny milestone for all those who had not made it already to the oylympics.
This race here will just be a peak and this or better these quads will never achieve anything similiar again.
Part of the U23 truth that is usually covered.
Who does expect just one of these crews to appear on the WC stage during next world cup season ?
Most all of them will part and find themselve back in a new system of 23+ competitors and only a few will make it and only a fraction in the same boat class. At the same time the big guys of that age have been in the single in Tokyo.
Luckily they might have had the feeling of the flow and peaking on such an event, but in the long run this will be mostly forgotten by the participants due to the long and winding road to make it to the A-Teams and perform as well.
