My father died in early February of this year. Earlier this month I was looking at his TH-cam history, it consisted of nothing but your videos. You brought my father such happiness in his final months. You summed it up PERFECTLY. I was holding my breath thinking she was going to be buried alive. Then I'm ready to throw up that they walked in a big circle. I get lost all the time and have nightmares just like this story. But NEVER did I suspect that the kidnapper was just some lame, horny dude.
I was immediately suspicious when Julian said he got hit on the head and was unconscious for several hours. This only happens on TV. It’s possible to be knocked unconscious, but only for a few seconds. Anything more than that, and there is permanent damage or you are dead.
To be fair, in some hiking trails, experienced hikers will leave rations for those who might be lost / need help. I remember one woman who hiked the Appalachians multiple times would leave care packs with food that doesn’t perish easily.
One of the little things I really appreciate is that you mark photos as "real picture" or "NOT the real photo". A lot of other channels do not do this and it leaves me confused when I see an image as to whether I am looking at the real thing or just some stock image related to the topic. Well done.

I used to live in the area where this happened. It was March 2008 - March generally has beautiful weather in that area 25-35c (75-90f) during the day and 15-25c (60-75f) during the night. No need to bake or freeze.
@@dawggonevidz9140 I used to work outdoors 12-14 hours a day and often spend the night under the stars year round when I lived in that area. I was always just fine. There's plenty of shelter, trails, farms, roads and clean water in the area. The biggest danger at that time of year is fires.

As awful as this is, I actually thought for a moment that he was going to assault her but hiding behind his kidnapper disguise. That it didn't play out that way is one positive aspect but I can't imagine how much fear Carolyn went through, binded, bundled into a car boot then having to watch someone dig a hole in the middle of a forest. I would have been terrified and expecting to be killed. Then another week of torture "escaping" the supposed kidnapper. Only to discover it was her fiance. For anyone wondering why people check roadkill here in Australia, it's because a lot our native animals (kangaroos, wombats, etc.) carry their young in their pouches. Whenever you see roadkill, you should stop to see if their young is still alive so that it can be rescued and taken to people who take care of orphaned wildlife. If there are no young in the pouch, you should spray paint an 'X' on the carcass (a lot of us carry spray paint for this purpose). In the states we , well some of us, stop and check opossums for young since usually the mothers body cushions the hit enough to keep them unharmed. However.. if someone does not check for babies, they slowly starve to death or end up getting run over as well. I wish everyone would take the moment to check on any animal they may have hit.. sadly many make a damn game out of it and look at animals as less deserving then a homosapian.

This was an ending to the story I never would have imagined. The fear Carolynne must have felt the entire time, the relief of making it out ok only to find out that it was her boyfriend who orchestrated it all. What a range of intense emotions she went through. The agony the families went though when they were missing is sad.
I knew something was suspicious when he claimed to have been knocked out by a blow to the head; that is a Hollywood trope. The roadkill premise also sounded like something a teenager would concoct. Although I didn’t guess the actual ending, the fact that there was a sleeping bag left out made me think that they were being pressured to have sex as an initiation, or that Julian was involved behind-the-scenes. I guess when you live in such isolation without any release, your mind can create some elaborate plots.
The fact that he wanted to have sex while they were being "abducted" was a pretty good giveaway. If he REALLY felt in danger for his life; he wouldn't have been able to put his guard down, so sex would definitely be off the table. Women are, usually, not aroused by imminent or potential death; They want to feel protected.
Depends on the person there are people out there that if there on the run from whatever after a couple days they usually let the guard down and if they are a couple would have sex and ya in immediate danger then no but after no signs of the attacker after a few days there guards would most deff be down enough to have sex I’m sure the women felt safe after a few days but she stuck to her morales and props to her for that
I used to check trash bags (and any other bags suit case) when I was young. My father used to tell me ur gonna find a dead body one day. Almost found one under a bridge. West Aussie here, we usually stop for big road kill or fresh road kill, especially Kangaroos to check if there are any joey's. Sometimes the animals have babies around, need to be moved of the road, or the animal may not be dead. If it's big, other then wild boar, goats, wild dogs, horses or cattle/bulls, we don't have many big wild animals here, so it would stop us to see what the heck it was😂🤣

It's such a wild story but how the media handled it (it happened in the 70s) really annoyed me because they were trying to romanticize it.

I’m from Australia and remember this case. This crime has not only cost him jail time, he was stripped from his true nationality. he was deported back to Germany soon after serving his time. The parents migrated from Germany in the mid 80’s then after going back to Germany for an extended visit, Julian was born there and returned to Aus when he was only 1yr old. For some reason he never applied for an Australian passport and was only a permanent resident. His siblings are Australians, he Didn’t speak any German, had no German friends, and is as Australian as an emu. According to Australian laws, you get deported even though you have permanent residency depending on the crime.

I mean, in fairness, the real culprit was a jerk with (almost) no self-control who didn't respect his fiancée or his faith. I was so confused when Julian said he got "knocked out" for hours and didn't mention any ill effects when he woke up or even later on. Despite what movies would have us believe you generally don't get knocked out for a significant amount of time and wake up just fine. You'd normally at the very least have a bad headache, grogginess and confusion. I did not anticipate what actually happened though what a horrible person, poor Caroline how would you ever trust again after that. P.S made a couple corrections as I'm getting comments saying apparently you can be fine after being knocked out cold for hours, in my admittedly limited experience this is not the norm and even if shock and or adrenaline stopped him from feeling the immediate effects I would think a day or two wandering the wilderness would have you feeling some kind of way. I just found this surprising when I was listening to the story and turns out it was fishy as his whole first story was a lie he never got knocked out which explains why he was totally fine.

I used to live in the area where this happened. It was March 2008 - March generally has beautiful weather in that area 25-35c (75-90f) during the day and 15-25c (60-75f) during the night. No need to bake or freeze.

As awful as this is, I actually thought for a moment that he was going to assault her but hiding behind his kidnapper disguise. That it didn't play out that way is one positive aspect but I can't imagine how much fear Carolyn went through, binded, bundled into a car boot then having to watch someone dig a hole in the middle of a forest. For anyone wondering why people check roadkill here in Australia, it's because a lot our native animals (kangaroos, wombats, etc.) carry their young in their pouches. Whenever you see roadkill, you should stop to see if their young is still alive so that it can be rescued and taken to people who take care of orphaned wildlife. If there are no young in the pouch, you should spray paint an 'X' on the carcass (a lot of us carry spray paint for this purpose). Stopping to check roadkill in Australia isn't a weird thing to do, in fact it is encouraged. Edit: Holy moly I cannot believe how many likes this has - thanks everyone!
In the states we , well some of us, stop and check opossums for young since usually the mothers body cushions the hit enough to keep them unharmed. However.. if someone does not check for babies, they slowly starve to death or end up getting run over as well. I wish everyone would take the moment to check on any animal they may have hit.. sadly many make a damn game out of it and look at animals as less deserving then a homosapian.

This was an ending to the story I never would have imagined. The fear Carolynne must have felt the entire time, the relief of making it out ok only to find out that it was her boyfriend who orchestrated it all. What a range of intense emotions she went through. The agony the families went though when they were missing is sad.

I knew something was suspicious when he claimed to have been knocked out by a blow to the head; that is a Hollywood trope. The roadkill premise also sounded like something a teenager would concoct. Although I didn’t guess the actual ending, the fact that there was a sleeping bag left out made me think that they were being pressured to have sex as an initiation, or that Julian was involved behind-the-scenes. I guess when you live in such isolation without any release, your mind can create some elaborate plots.

West Aussie here, we usually stop for big road kill or fresh road kill, especially Kangaroos to check if there are any joey's.
Sometimes the animals have babies around, need to be moved of the road, or the animal may not be dead. If it's big, other then wild boar, goats, wild dogs, horses or cattle/bulls, we don't have many big wild animals here, so it would stop us to see what the heck it was😂🤣

It's such a wild story but how the media handled it (it happened in the 70s) really annoyed me because they were trying to romanticize it.
The fact that he tied her up in such a painful position and left her like that for so many hours just shows how wicked he is. If she hadn’t continued to say no to this weirdo, she might have become pregnant and then she and her child would always be connected to him. Horrifying!

I’m from Australia and remember this case. This crime has not only cost him jail time, he was stripped from his true nationality. he was deported back to Germany soon after serving his time. The parents migrated from Germany in the mid 80’s then after going back to Germany for an extended visit, Julian was born there and returned to Aus when he was only 1yr old. For some reason he never applied for an Australian passport and was only a permanent resident. His siblings are Australians, he Didn’t speak any German, had no German friends, and is as Australian as an emu. According to Australian laws, you get deported even though you have permanent residency depending on the crime.

Stopping for kangaroo roadkill is common. Many young have been rescued from pouches of dead females.
There’s always a chance that the animal is still alive and can be rescued, so it’s actually plausible someone would stop for a roadkill.

I was so confused when Julian said he got "knocked out" for hours and didn't mention any ill effects when he woke up or even later on. Despite what movies would have us believe you generally don't get knocked out for a significant amount of time and wake up just fine. You'd normally at the very least have a bad headache, grogginess and confusion. P.S made a couple corrections as I'm getting comments saying apparently you can be fine after being knocked out cold for hours, in my admittedly limited experience this is not the norm and even if shock and or adrenaline stopped him from feeling the immediate effects I would think a day or two wandering the wilderness would have you feeling some kind of way. I just found this surprising when I was listening to the story and turns out it was fishy as his whole first story was a lie he never got knocked out which explains why he was totally fine.

Exactly. I was knocked out one time for about 15 minutes. When I woke up not only are not remember what day it was, I couldn't even remember what year it was lol. Also when he said he passed the roadkill then had to get out to go look for it. I thought that was really suspicious
When I heard that I was thinking wow, unconscious from a blow to the head for HOURS and he's still able to be escaping and run around, extremely lucky.

What I love about Mr. Ballen… Is the fact that he doesn’t have to use any ridiculous or false thumbnails to get our attention. All he has to do is tell us Strange, mysterious, or scary stories that are accurate to the best of his knowledge. I cannot stand when people post fake thumbnails for videos Or even worse…. I also love the fact that he tells a story with his normal voice, unlike similar videos out there where people alter their voice, in which said videos become unbearable to listen to.
