Everything about this scene hurts… but the fact that Yuji’s pace starts to pick up as he hears Nanami fighting in the distance is what gets me. He’s tired from what Sukuna just subjected him to physically/mentally but he can hear his comrade fighting just up ahead.. you just know the “what if” scenarios are going to plague him for the rest of his life. “What if I had been faster.” “What if I had gotten to him sooner”. Gege really said “F**k them kids!” when he started this arc because everyone’s getting traumatized gdi!

Yuji has undoubtedly become stronger but half, if not more than half, the reason he is able to keep with Mahito is Sukuna's soul.

I do genuinely get the sense that Mahito had some respect for Nanami. Not just because he humbled the curse during their first fight (and pushed him to discovering new heights to his power in their second), but also because of Nanami's absolutely RELENTLESS will and ability to put his life on the line with no regrets. It's admirable, and no different to what the disater curses themselves are doing (in a way, at least).
Even Mahito's decision to just _talk_ with Nanami and give him the opportunity for last words, mirrors how Nanami let HIM go at the end of their first fight (promising a rematch someday).
I dunno.. It’s fitting, I guess.

The difference is its in Mahitos nature. He enjoys it because its what he was born to do. Thats why when Yuji asks him how he can toy with everyones lives he just says should I count each kill and pretend to be worried. Toying with humans is natural to him and he accepted it instead of repressing it. The same way you wouldnt call a tiger or a lion a monster if it kills a human, you might be upset at it but you would understand that its exactly what should be expected from a tiger.

Sad to see a cool character go away. I like everything about this guy, his attire, his technique, his voice, his personality, everything. He also reminds me from an another character named Sir Nighteye from My Hero Academia, they share the same serious personality, does their duties, is a senior, wears a nice businessman suit, and both are just awesome. Both of them also faced the same fate. Well, Nanami, you died a warrior.

@@taylorthesillyguyyeah, but a lot of these VA have done angry voicing scenes and a lot of times it just comes off forced and cringy. The voice acting here actually encapsulates extremely well the anger and borderline despair of Yuji. They also cut in this video, but Mahito making fun of Yuji also came out terrifically.

My theory: One of the reasons behind why Nanami had to die is because in the first fight with Mahito and in the part where he almost gets killed by Mahito's domain, he gets saved by Sukuna. Out of all the characters who could have saved him, it's the evil Sukuna (doesn't matter if it wasn't the intent, the result matters).
If Nanami continued to be a recurring character in the show till the end, I bet that would more or less backfire Sukuna's evil nature as there's one genuinely good stuff that Sukuna has done unknowingly. So Nanami was fated to die at some point in the story.
He is an amazing character for being in the story for a relatively short time. RIP the most relatable character in the show.

Anyone thinks nanami strength was underwhelming and his powers were not explored/shown from him after seeing how absolutely he one shotted that guy ... and then he struggling against that squid and next was speed blized by jogo and burned and i mean other sorcerers has lot lot of unique powers /boost ups etc man i expected a lot ..but anyways ripp
I think thats kind of the point. JJK builds up characters, trickles out their backstories, and constantly implies that there is more to that character but its not afraid to throw ALL of that development away to catch you off guard. Usually in a show if they build a character up or set up future stuff for them they are much more hesitant to kill them off. But JJK sets up their futures with the intent to lower your guard.
