    I don’t mind the duplicate timeline if we’re seeing completely different events, or if they have really unique POVs! I also love the way Rainbow Rowell did it in Carry On where we bounced back and forth between inner monologues (some as short as one sentence) almost like a screenplay at parts.

    • @KateCavanaugh
      @KateCavanaugh  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Okay yeah! I think that's where I'm at too. I don't mind so long as we're seeing different things (which in this story, we are).
      Also this is my confession time: I've never read a Rainbow Rowell book. (Or I started one, but didn't finish.) How much am I missing out?? Bahaha.

    I'm not sure if you like this, but I always like when there is a sound or a movement or some action that makes the moment your going to. Just off the top of my head: Character X skulks along the bookcase then stops at the creak of the step. Is it Character Y or someone else?
    Character Y winces as the creak of the step echoes off the walls. Did anyone hear it?
    That sort of thing. I feel it anchors you to a moment in time and also raises the tention.
    I've not seen Kindel Vella, it sound interesting. I look forward to your vlog on it.
    I think a 5-6 week lead time is the best this way you still give yourself time to play and write/edit. I still plan on starting a TH-cam channel and I want to have 6 episodes ready to go so I always have a buffer if I can't film or edit for a couple of weeks.

    If the new perspective on an event shifts the context in an interesting way I'm all for it! The key for me is bringing in new information so there is a new takeway for the reader.
    Excited to read your D&D story!

  • @elzare17
    @elzare17 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I switch between perspectives a ton and usually when there’s overlap I try to either make it one continuous event with switching POVs or only write from the one with the most important information!

  • @sydney2802
    @sydney2802 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I often switch between characters and so I think I've gotten good at writing in a way that deepens the reader's understanding of a story without outright repeating scenes, but that just comes with practice.

    I published on vella a short story which was roughly 7 episodes as a test and based on my test the vella audience is not there as of yet. Unless you have a strong following as a new author discovery by people is very slim. With a big enough vella audience even accidental clicks can occur leading to discovery of your story but if your not a established author, discovery is low. But you as a youtuber should have no issue building an audience on vella due to carry over from channel

    • @KateCavanaugh
      @KateCavanaugh  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      That's really interesting to hear, thank you for sharing!! Are you hopeful the audience will increase in the future? Like would you try it again in a year or so?

    • @njmanga617
      @njmanga617 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@KateCavanaugh I'm always hopeful I believe once they release a android app of vella alongside the Apple app that will increase access to readers but as well once they open it internationally, we just need people with access to allow discovery to occur , I will keep posting shorts to see what occurs but nothing big until the audience is there, they really need to improve discovery tools if anyone is to have some type of chance to compete with those with larger followings

    The way I'm approaching the new idea of multiple pov in project Realm is with two perspectives, one character gets every other chapter. After one character chapter ends, another character tells what is happening to them. The next chapter becomes about the next character and what happened to them after the previous scene. For example, chapter one ends, and the characters change. The second pov talks about what is going on in a fresh scene after the previous events.

    One thing you could do if you had to take a break from releasing for the official campaign story is writing some mini side stories. For example, sharing the origin stories of the characters lives before coming together (if the other players are cool with sharing of course) or writing from the perspective of some of the favorite npcs so we get to know them a bit better

  • @jeremyfee
    @jeremyfee 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @KateCavanaugh  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thanks Jeremy!! I'm super pumped. The characters are absolutely ridiculous and I get to incorporate my brothers ~zingers~ into the novelization which is really fun. It feels really collaborative even if I'm the one doing the actual "writing" work.

    For the 20 sided dye transition, I like the idea that you throw a dye and the number it falls on is a hint at what’s to come in the next clip. So like, 20 means your reached your word count for something, 1 means your really struggling with a piece, 6 means you’re feeling meh right now, etc 😂 maybe there’s too many numbers to come up with things for but I feel like it’s a fun idea

  • @Wallisimo
    @Wallisimo 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Yes!! More DnD content is all I truly want in this world! I think a five week buffer should be plenty and it wouldn’t hurt to both have a buffer AND do the story in seasons just to give yourself that extra room. Also, I’m sure you’ve looked into this already, but since you’re putting the story behind a paywall be careful about any terms you use that might be owned by WotC. (ex: dark elf is fine to use but I think WotC owns the term Drow)
    And thank you so much for coming to the chocolate short story stream/shouting it out. Now that I know it’s one of your favorite Authortube series I guess I should actually write them 🤣

    I've heard of Kindle Vella but I haven't the foggiest idea what it's about (holding off on heavy research until my YA anime fantasy rewrites are done).
    I am excited for the D&D novelisation (all your books, lets be real!). Also, can't wait for your Kindle Vella video!
    Sidenote: Around the Campfire (Campfire Blaze YT channel) has a gameshow called Write Fight every other Monday at 7pm EST. Last night was their 9th episode.
    Levi has a new guest judge and we get randomly rolled prompts and 10 minutes to write. Then there's a random judging criteria added (e.g. MC that most likely needs a mint) and we vote for our fave one as well as the judge's vote. It's tons of fun!
    I know you like to experiment Kate so I know you'd enjoy this, in addition to the witter banter in the comments (e.g. there's an ongoing calzone war lolz).
    Take care and have a great week Kate!

    In regards to the idea of a 'here is where the characters last were' chapter update: I often find webnovels use the last two or three sentences from the previous chapter to start the next chapter. This is so much better than giving a 'quick recap' as the few sentences at the beginning of a new chapter will jog the memory of a reader anyway.

    In regards to the situation with writing different POVs. I find that dedicating one whole chapter to one character and having them finish the chapter just before a 'major reveal' or something similar is good - because you leave them on a cliff hanger. With the cliff hanger, you then jump to the other persons POV for a chapter and have them finish on the conclusion of the other characters cliff hanger. This way it's different POV's, you jump time for the POVs, but you also avoid going back and forth too often and you allow a sense of suspense for the reader to hook on to

    Someone once told be a funny thing
    That modern american novels are easier to film than european or russian partly because american writers tend to write their novels as if it was filmed) do you understand what i'm trying to say?)
    I haven't thought about it in a while and when you start to explain why you're not stuck I saw what you're trying to achieve (at least i hope i saw) and it was, in my head, indeed a movie scene where the characters a moving simultaniously through the house)

      @@shawnlee220 it's one of the ways, of course, but it's not the only option)
      Writing is always about telling a story, but the way you tell it might be differ) for example, one could focus more on the form or have a lot of details, descriptions and comparisons. It's also might not be focused on a location at all - the thought process or sounds might be the main contrapunto) and this is much harder to film as you can't have it all srcipted out - ready to shoot - youhave to trully go deep into the novel to understand what author wanted to say or show)
      Of course the value of a novel is not based no it's ability to be not ready for instant filming) there're lot's of ways to write a good book, but my main thought was - it really is rather amusing to notice that there's some kind of a tendency or way to write a book in america as a script) i wasn't thinking about it seriously before and now i will)

    Episodic “reminder” things are found in webcomics (Webtoons is where I find them) or in Legend of Korra which is a riff on old radio storytelling by when they did weekly stories. You can always look at how those kind of things deal with episodes. For serialization- little women was originally serialized in a newspaper and you can tell it when you read it if you know what to look for.

    I used to follow a vlog that posted chapters of original fiction every week. I enjoyed it... until the person decided to stop posting and gave up on it. To this day, I still don't know how the story was supposed to end and will always be sad that the story will never be complete. I think it's good to have a good chunk of it done prior to posting. This will likely help you feel less pressure and prevent burn out.

One of my favorites, Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation, recently got licensed in English, so there will soon be an official publication & the fan translation was taken down. I'm glad I could read as much of it as I did, but also happy that the fan interest convinced the publisher to pick it up! Well, I hope this was at least somewhat interesting to you...

    As a kindle user I've been hesitant about kindle vella. I think it's a cool idea, but I'm also afraid it's going to be something people are going to use as a "get rich quick" kinda thing and not post serious edited work. It's a pet peeve of mine on Kindle when people are trying to make money off their work and don't put any effort into making it read well. It's not like fanfiction where you can overlook spelling and grammar errors because it's written for fun not monetary purposes. I end up feeling like my time and money was wasted. With the stories being much shorter and cheaper it seems like a good idea, but I'm still hesitant about it. But I trust you Kate, and if you publish on there I will gladly support you!
