Walter Smith was universally liked and respected. When I first heard the news, instant sadness came over me. My condolences to all his loved ones and to the supporters of Rangers - you lost a good one.
The footballing world respected Walter Smith. I don't think anyone could have foreseen what he would do for us when Souness left. But 10 titles and 11 cups in two spells tells its own story. He was a great manager and an even better human being. Most of all his blood was blue.

As a child in the 90s, I took him for granted. When he returned, I was in my mid-20s and I was able to appreciate his true genius. He was a legend in every sense of the word. RIP Gaffer.
I totally agree he represented rangers so well as a manager and as a man thinking of his family at this sad time goodbye Walter never be forgotten he deserves a statue at Ibrox
He took what Graeme Souness had started and proceeded to take Rangers to another level. One of the greatest managers the football world has ever known.

Deeply saddened by the loss of Walter Smith. He was a brilliant football manager and just an amazing leader of men. I’m a Celtic fan, but I’ve been on the receiving end of Smiths brilliance as Rangers manager but I’ve sensed a profound respect from all Celtic fans down the years. My over riding memory of Smith was that he always had class even when his brilliant Rangers teams were hammering Celtic always felt respect and decency were at the heart of everything Smith did. A great man, RIP.
Nice comment. I felt the same the day Tommy Burns passed away. These are when divides are shattered and it's about the human aspect. Respect to you my friend. Sad sad day 😭💙

From a diehard Celt, this man oozed class and the respect across the divide in Glasgow is a testament to the type of man Walter was. I have the deepest respect for what he did for Scottish football. He will never be forgotten. RIP
He was a credit to Scottish football. What he did for Tommy Burns when he passed, and his immediate response to Tommy after a huge rangers loss in Europe speaks volumes of the man he was. He gave me many days of upset but I guess that’s football and that also shows how good he was at what he did. I’ll forever respect the man
As a Dons fan may I pass on my condolences for a great man and a great manager who commanded respect across all footballing divides. Scottish football has lost one of its true giants
