The stone texture is accurate to the props from that time. Police boxes in real life were mainly made from concrete rather than wood. The prop was made of wood made to look concrete. The whole “wooden box” idea I think only came about to poke fun at how flimsy the prop looked. Now of course the props are made to purposely look wooden
I've watched a little bit of Classic Who since this. I use Pluto TV, and I don't really have a better way to watch it. The problem with Pluto is that they only show a select few episodes from every Doctors' era, I haven't seen the Fourth Doctor's *Robot* for example.

I would certainly recommend watching the Classic stuff. You wouldn’t have the current version if it wasn’t for the Classic
