This was my dad’s and my favorite Cleo Laine song back in 1974. Dad introduced me to her music. I still adore this song. I miss you, daddy, and thank you for all the wonderful music you introduced to me all my life. I do miss you, daddy. RIP❤️🎶😘💕
Had the privilege of being at this concert and later meeting her at her label's recording studios on W. 44th St. in New York City. She was my favorite singer and, though I made a complete fool of myself, she was so gracious. This beautiful, haunting song remains my favorite.
I know how that feels , you act so stupit when you are completely starstruck , i've had it a few times too. But then the artists were so gracious and made me completely at ease. I had the previlege of seeing and hearing her live a number of times too. She was fantastick.
Ever since I heard this song I just can't get enough of this. You can feel her sadness in her voice. You can feel the loneliness having a wonderful time and I wish you were here. I am coming home. Superb this surely is Cleo's signature song.
Lovely song by a renowned, for good reasons, artist. I haven't heard this song since '75 or thereabouts and coming across it here on the 'Tube is yet another stroke of good fortune brought to me by TH-cam. I had forgotten that I had forgotten about this beautiful tune. Thank you very much.
Don't get too attached to this music, exquisite vocal, and imagery as it may affix to your soul and never allow the forgetting of the one that got away...
Cleo sings of all the senses in this: sight, sound, taste, smells. But the only one that really counts is touch, when you're far from home, away from your loved one(s). Want to come home.
Met them three times, once in Stratford, Canada, once in New Zealand and again in Australia. I was in awe of them. In fact our whole family was. Johnny was very sweet to my daughter who was learning Clarinet at the time, giving her encouragement. RIP John, wish you were here xoxoxo and love to Cleo xoxoxo.
I was at the University of Oklahoma at Holmberg Hall, a more intimate venue, when she did her warm up for her Carnegie Hall Concert. It was amazing. She did everything she would do at Carnegie Hall and more. This brings back such wonderful memories! It was one of the most amazing evenings of music in my entire life, especially since I didn't know who she was before I got there! I failed to say that this is my favorite song she has done. Takes me back to a special time in my life that I lost and can never have again.
Three years later,. This song still touches me in a way few others do. The person it takes me to has now passed away. It still makes me lonely for that individual.
"I'm writing this card on the promenade". This line from the song's stuck with me, in my imagination, for all of these years. Cleo's phrasing and descriptive vocal imagery causes me to 'see' those things she describes throughout the song. So very poignant especially as Winter looms and the relatively carefree moments of Summer now are dwindling to a speck in the rear-view mirror.
If I could jump thru the internet, I would HUG you. I Love this song and have been searching for it on line, in the stores, even flea markets and I never found it until now. Thank you so very much. What a voice the One and only DIVA has. .
Cleo Laine is simply one of the greatest singers of the 20th century, popular or classical. Perfect pitch, perfect enunciation of English. A 4-octave range. I recommend her to foreign language students of English to listen to great songs sung in English with perfectly clear diction by one of the greatest jazz singers of all time. She can't be beat.
Dear (Please may I say) Lady Cleo She is definition of the most! Love you forever and keep the family together! Mumsies are great for that and I am so happy I have had a special Mum that introduduced me to you when you sund " Stop and smell the Roses" I remember so well like yesterday so close, Love to you Cleo from Shane Kaka
oh this is wonderful ..I love her 'plummy' sound so much!!! Thanks so much for posting it's so good to hear something sincere and truly musical :) xxxx
Tamesse - that's incredible! Thank you so much. Hearing the original version of a favorite song-- performed by the composer-- is an amazing treat! I had no idea this existed.
@Outverb :Thanks. I concentrated on her pronunciation, just yesterday, of that word as it flows like fine cognac at that point in the song. Another year passed. Best wishes to you, 'Verby'.
Well put, Tralfaz. the "phrasing and vocal imagery" are remarkable. I adore how she makes "beautiful" a six syllable word. Paleo; I'll try to get "Pigfoot" on here soon.
I can't thank you enough for posting this! I grew up listening to her music and this is one of my favorites! Do you have any others? I would love it if you had "Buy Me A Pigfoot" . Thanks!!!
@paleo2569 "Gimme a Pigfoot and a Bottle of Beer" is now on this site. I love that song too. Check out the versions by Bessie Smith and Billie Holliday.

Cleo Laine has the most gorgeous voice I have ever heard. Loved her as a child and still swoon over her talent as an adult. Her voice is unique.

I made a fool of myself, too, but she didn't mind! She was just happy to meet someone she had friends in common with.

My God....I adore this woman and this album is among her very best!
I've been wanting to hear this again for years. Our high school swing choir performed it in 1979. What memories!
She and her husband, John, were such lovely people to meet. They made you feel so welcome. My favorite song by her.
I remember Cleo as a pure force on stage, totally in control and mesmerising.

My most favorite song from this Grande Damme!

Bossa Palma Nova is not on this album - sorry! I've never heard another version of this song.
Ruined by the ridiculous cartoon and muppet mindlessness. terrible. Is that the best you can do?
