this is the best video on the FT-60 on youtube, even after all these years! thank you Philip for such a great resource. just passed my Technician license this morning, ordered an FT-60R as soon as i got home! with some practice and some more learning, i hope to take & pass my General in a month or few! thank you again. hope you are well and still loving on your FT-60 :)
I'm new to ham radios and just started to study for Technician class license. I bought this radio today so I can listen to my Hang Gliding buddies when we fly. I can find out where the good lift is. I look forward to passing my exam so I can transmit also. Your videos was informative and to the point. I like the cheat sheet idea as well. thanks for posting.
Excellent video!Straight to the point, no getting sidetracked, and no MUSIC!!! Awesome! Thanks for great instruction. When my FT-60 arrives, I'll be watching again! My hat's off to ya Sir! 73's KE0ASW
I watched this soon after getting my FT60, found it helpful. I could add that for me, one of the best functions on this rig is the memory bank system. Exceptionally easy to set up and makes selective scanning so easy. This a very versatile little radio indeed - it's a 100% keeper. Mine also gets used as a sometime mobile radio with a magmount and a lapel mike. If mine broke today I'd buy a replacement tomorrow, it's that good.
I bought my ft-60r today thanks to you it sounded very good and you were right about it its robust rugged simple the program repeater offset shift automatically I love it I put 20 memories in it now so I have 20 different frequencies I have 10 frequencies on VHF in another 10 on UHF I'm pretty much set now now I can program some of the public service different frequencies thank you for your great presentation your best friend
Very appreciate all your help you're a very wise man very good choice on the ft-60r what a great aircraft radio it is it has a great receiver built-in for just a small package I've gotten a lot of great rapport with it looking for an eye on lithium batteries and charger around 2600 millions closer to 3000 get a lot more life out of the battery thanks once again for introducing me to the FT60R
Hi Phillip! Thank you for your very informative video on the Yeasu FT-60. Very straightforward and succinct. This radio is by far the most well-built HT I have ever owned. I have the old Icoms from the late 1970s' and just recently added this unit to my collection.
hello phil remember me? im the guy that had the ft 60 with the internal speaker not working, well i split the case and found the prob it seems that these radios speaker is mounted on the plastic case and makes contac with the board with two tads that stick up off the board not with wires so long story short one of the metal tabs was not makeing contac with the speaker so i bent the tab and to my suprise it works so now alls i need to do is replace the battery and it will work as good as new so yes i guess i did git a good deal for $25.00, thanks for the help on learning to program it 73s John...K6JRD
thank you for your presentation I think you did an exceptional job my call is N2HGL have a great New Years coming up I think I'll get me another one that's a great radio very rugged military grade thank you once again
Would you consider emailing your cheat-sheet(s) for your FT-60? There are a few operations in the manual that I find lacking. Thanks in advance for your assistance in this matter as it is appreciated.
I’m looking at maybe purchasing this radio. I have a very old xv 5r The power button on the xv 5r is very hard to turn on so my question is this radio have a power button or does it turn on by a switch?
If you look at the video at about 5 seconds in, you'll see the on/off - volume knob between the antenna and the channel selector knob. It's easy. I, too, have an XV-5R, and you definitely won't be turning it on or off accidentally. That button is buried.
I would like to know how you went about to get the program information on to the 4 x 6 cards. I think it would be a great help for most most hams and especially the new hams.
Step 1, I read the manual. Step 2, I use a word processor to type up a summary of the information I need on the 4x6 cards. The word processor I use (Mariner Write) lets me format pages for a variety of sizes, including 4x6.
AF6WI you have the best videos on the ft-60r out of anyone doing the report when that handy talky you have the best video you actually demonstrate the radio and show everyone how the functions work you have idiots on here just bending in the antenna complaining about the radio you can't get it to stand up by itself because of the battery pack the way the clip is just a bunch of nonsense bunch of stupid talk I wish these people which state off and not make videos you make the best videos your best friend from Dallas Georgia
Hi, Ricky. If you go to 4:42 on the video, I show how to enter frequencies for receive. Since you won't be transmitting, you don't need to worry about offsets and CTCSS.
I have zero expertise in repairs. My first guess if it were happening to me is that the battery's dead. Have you charged it for hours? How old is the battery?
philip I put a new battery in and tried a manual reset but no luck. was hoping somebody out there might have a tip or trick to fix it. Thank you for your reply sir!
Philip, does using this radio _require_ an "Amateur Radio License" (i think it is called "technician license)? Or is a license just "highly recommended"?
Hi, Peter. US Federal law makes it illegal to transmit on ham radio frequencies without being licensed to do so. You may use ham radios to listen to the transmissions of hams, but you may not transmit unless you have a license. I don't speak for other countries and their laws.
You're not supposed to transmit the tone unless you're controlling a repeater or using it to patch you in to the phone system. You'll have people calling and saying 'turn off WIRES!'
i picked up a ft 60 for 25.00 told it worked but needed a battery charger from amazon well its on the new charger and the red light is on so its chargeing how long does it take to chargeand ill let you no if i got a good deal or not.....John K6JRD

Rotate the DIAL knob to select one choice from the reset menu: F1 SETRST: Resets the Set (Menu) mode settings to their factory defaults. F2 MEMRST:Clears the Memory settings to factory defaults. +John DeCicco No problem -- we all get the names confused in these threads. Try going through all the steps again to reset the radio. I'm _not_ going to reset mine, though, to test the steps. :-> I've done two factory resets on my cell phone this afternoon, and I'm all reset out. Choose F1 SETRST to see if setting to factory defaults helps, then press and release the F/W key. Good luck!
Here ya go! 1. Press the [V/M(PRI)] key, if needed, to enter the MR mode. 2. Press and hold in the [F/W] key for one second, then rotate the DIAL knob to select the memory channel to be “deleted.” 3. Philip could you plz explain the differences in the YAESU FT-60R and the YAESU FT-60R/E. The E is confusing..
I'm sorry, but I've never heard of the R/E. I can't help you on this.
Thank you
The e version is for Europe where we have different amateur band coverage.
Can you do a video of programming the yaesu ft 60r just to receive only
Hi, Ricky. If you go to 4:42 on the video, I show how to enter frequencies for receive. Since you won't be transmitting, you don't need to worry about offsets and CTCSS.
My radio flashes on and goes right back off when I try to power the radio on. Any idea whats wrong with it??
