    What a very respectful man Scott Cooper is towards William Friedkin. Excellent conversation and analysis of the film and subject. Rest In Peace, Mr. Friedkin. Not forgotten

      +Snrub Too bad it sucked. Depp was great, though. Worth it for his performance alone.

    • @el34glo59
      @el34glo59 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +PrettysureItsInfectd Agreed. The documentary blows it away and it's a shame they screwed the move up. Especially with a talent like Michael Shannon.

    • @pettypettywoodchuck2
      @pettypettywoodchuck2 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Michael Pecikonis I agree with you about the documentaries being better, not just 'Whitey', but there's several good hour long ones on youtube as well. I really think this movie could have been fleshed out more, more detail. I honestly love 3 hour movies and I think that would have helped Black Mass. Don't feel like we really got to know Depp's character.

    • @el34glo59
      @el34glo59 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Snrub I was talking about The Iceman docs. I'm hoping Black Mass is better than then friggin Iceman movie because I'm really looking forward to it. I haven't seen it yet and I'm extremely excited to see it. Can't wait to see Depp finnaly play the role he was made for. Been awhile. And Edgerton underrated in everything. I heard he'd amazing too. Did you like it more than the departed? I know they're not the same movie, and I know it was the American version of infernal affairs, but it's the most recent movie to compare it to gangster wise. And Nicholsons ridiculously over the top, overrated performance was loosely based on whitey. I'm not a big fan of the departed and think felt completley forced and mailed in. However I respect the fact something people liked it. What's your opinion. What's the better movie?

    • @el34glo59
      @el34glo59 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Friedkin is dead on when he describes the somewhat unsettling similarities between cops and criminals. My grandpa was actually a cop in the NYPD that worked narcotics from the mid 60's well into the 70's. He was friends with Eddie Egan and Sonny Grosso and was on the team that helped with the production of the French Connection. Back then working plain clothes narcotics meant that after morning role call you were out the door and almost on your own. You had your partner, an iron with 12-18 spare .38 rounds, a black jack in your front pocket, and a shotgun under the seat. That's it. No portable radios so the only way to get help was the car radio or a police call box. If they weren't handy you could be fucked. To offset that disadvantage cops had to cultivate an aggressive street presence. That scene when Gene Hackman and Roy Scheider shake down that bar, that's not bullshit. Two white cops could really put themselves into those types of situations if their reputation allowed it. If criminals recognized you as an apex predator on the street, they would act accordingly. You had to be highly motivated and extremely aggressive.to stay alive in that environment.

    Growing up in Boston Whitey had a lot of influence in the neighborhood.
    Heck even my whole childhood.
    Whitey showed my aunt how to tell if you are getting wiretapped.
    I wish they never found him.
    After he left Boston turned to heroin.

    • @goestplus
      @goestplus 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Romanticizing violence is ridiculous. Boston has always had drug problems. There is no such thing as a good gangster.

    • @el34glo59
      @el34glo59 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +goestplus Sometimes a gangster is needed. Whether he's good in your eyes morally isn't the point. Sometimes it keeps the city in check from drugs, young punks with guns, and disorder. Sometimes the cops are the bad gangsters and you need a "good" one to keep the city in check.

    • @goestplus
      @goestplus 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Michael Pecikonis I'm wondering if you'd also say that to the families of people Whitey Bulger murdered?

    • @el34glo59
      @el34glo59 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +goestplus No I wouldn't. And I never said I was talking about Whitey specifically. I was talking in generalities. And I'm right. You think if the mob was what is used to be your have all this gang violence. Absolutely not. They wouldn't allow it and it would save many many innocent lives considering gang violence is used against mostly innocent people while if the mob got came to see you, you probably deserved it or put yourself in a bad position. This is true all over the world. Sometimes evil has to be left alone so more people don't suffer. Like Sadam. Kept the terrorists in check. Now he was a piece of shit bit the dumbest thing we could ever do was take him out. Now it's filled another terrorists and we and the world are in more danger and the people who love there are still being killed. Sometimes you have to see the future and pick the lesser of two evils. Because getting rid of one giant bug can cause an entire infestation of uncontrollable roaches.
