My college district recently decided to cut ties with Proctorio, and I am so hyped because proctoring is one thing, but to make a student do a complete 360 of their surroundings and watching students' every movement is just awful, and if anything, it amplifies stress and anxiety while students are taking an exam. I have to say this opinion before I even watch the video. The schools should not monitor your activity online, it's not their job. Their job is to teach you. Now Schools own networks should be monitored and such, but that's limited just to their network access and such (I'm totally not using the right language here but I hope it's getting across)

And if you believe you are doing nothing wrong it shouldn’t be that hard to defend yourself. With people being scared to join religious group on social media maybe they aren’t ready to do that in the first place but social media provide a sense of security that can sometimes lead you into the wrong direction.

I think it makes sense to have surveillance in the school structure itself and any equipment owned by the school but they should not be allowed to see what students do with their own personal property outside of school unless there's a reasonable amount of suspicion that something's really wrong. Like with the 4th amendment, how cops can't come in and search your house without a reasonable amount of suspicion and a warrant. But assuming the students are minors, parents can choose to monitor their kids' online activity if they so wish of course.

Well, when it comes to preventing students from committing suicide, self-harming, or school shootings, this internet surveillance is only trying to stop symptoms of the larger problem which is the student's mental health. Most schools don't have that many counselors and they do not encourage their students to seek out help. Schools are putting a ton of money into stopping the symptoms from occurring, but they do not seem as worried about the cause of these actions.

Improving the overall mental heath of adolescents would require more human involvment and less companies selling off-the-shelf solutions. But the USA and it's capitalism glory will never even consider this an option. (I'm not implying that France and our Macron would be any better.)

Could you please also address the issue of monitoring software collecting student data to sell to advertisers? A university in my city openly admitted the monitoring software monitored even when you weren't doing anything to do with school, even when you told it not to, and could access files without having to wait for you to open them. This wasn't to keep students safe. The university openly admitted it would sell student data if it ever went bankrupt... THAT was why the students were forced to download the software

😨 that sounds so shady! Thanks for raising this point. We didn’t get into that because we were focused on high schools, where they do have pretty strict policies in most districts about shielding students’ data from advertising. But it would be super interesting to look into what’s happening on that front in higher Ed.

I'm against the surveillance and in most cases technology. I'd rather schools used thinclients, whitelists and other restrictions, ban mobile devices by using jammers and let the kids be. In event of any kind of threat, the jamming technology be turned off. I also think there should be a discussion in school about social media psychology, threats, addictions etc. as part of the curriculum in some mandatory course such as English or History.

As always with your topics, it’s complicated! I don’t know the answer, but I feel there’s gotta be a line somewhere. I’m imagining a sad future where advanced technology is used in schools to capture and analyze every single student’s conversations on campus, virtual and face to face. And perhaps that same tech is used by parents off campus (such as a kind of spying wristwatch). Kids are people too, and they deserve a certain degree of privacy. But of course we want to keep them safe, so maybe it’s a matter of balancing privacy and surveillance. Some surveillance is good but let’s not get carried away.

1:43, instead of throwing more money to their safety problem and trying to cure the symptoms, maybe they should throw more money at their mental health crisis and wellness programs and treat the problem from the root.
Of course this doesn’t mean security shouldn’t be invested in, but in my opinion they are throwing their money in the wrong place.

I’m really lucky that my school can’t control my devices just thinking about the idea of them controlling my personal devices is a nightmare and I hope that nightmare doesn’t come true for me

I'm kinda scared for my life rn...I was on a anime website and ofc yk those ads that you don't even click on but it takes you to a h3nt@i page or sum? Yeah my clumsy hands clicked the screen and ofc it said "sorry, you have been BLOCKED." The scary thing is, when you're on an "inappropriate" website it gets flagged and the school district can see what you were trying to do...normally they would call the teacher's class you're in but...since I'm at home....would they call my parents instead???!!!!!! I'm as good as dead. What makes it worse is that I have Mexican parents. How do I explain I was trying to watch Attack on Titan and it took me to a bad website? Nobody would believe me. RIP me :D

    *Creepy weird Story*
*Besure to read it and help me find out whats going on here*
Idk if my school teachers are tracking my phone bc I do my homework with the help of my phone and I also open youtube in my phone in split screen while doing my homework. And last week I went to my professor to handover my homework and after handing the homework to him he said that I want to talk about something important and he asked me that do watch youtube on my phone on split screen and do my homework with the help of my phone? I was so surprised I couldnt say anything he asked me once again but I was still slient then he said that Ik you do that. I still was so surprised and I started to panic bc he also told me how much I used my phone and how much time I use each app, I was very creeped out but then my blood pressure started to go low bc I get very anxious easily but I had to control myself then I went to my principle's office to discuss her about how my Chemistry Teacher wasnt teaching us well and she also said that same thing what my professor told me. I am super creeped out it feels like someone is watching me

I feel like that should be illegal but I’m not completely sure. It’s so creepy how school can track your personal device!! I do the same thing as you I use TH-cam to help me with my school work and my parents don’t think anything is wrong with it. So I would maybe talk to your parents about it or whoever raises you.
