You’re right. The woman is Kuasa, Mari’s older sister. She has the water totem, that’s where she gets her power. And at this point in Amaya’s life she hasn’t had her daughter yet, so if she dies before her daughter is born, then Kuasa and Mari won’t ever be born either, so Kuasa couldn’t kill her.

Originally she stole the animal spirit totem from her even though she was slightly psychotic. But Mari got it back later on, then later she re-claimed a different totem, called the water totem Afterwards. She died in the CW Vixen series protecting her little sister from Benatu Eshu, he had the fire totem , who was an original soldier that basically ransacked and destroyed .
