Who Are the Aes Sedai?
In the Wheel of time, men who use the One Power, the magic of the world go mad. They often live sad lonely lives until they are gentiled or killed. Women on the other hand live a very different life. Women who can use the one Power are often taken to Tar Valon. There they grow up, and are taught about the one power and how to use it. If you survive and endure the training and the tests you become a member of the Aes Sedai.
When one becomes Aes Sedai they must swear oaths on an object called the oath rod. Using the one power the channel magic into the oath rod and swear the Oaths of the Aes Sedai. This means they literally cannot break these oaths.
The three oaths that an Aes Sedai must swear are: To speak no word that is not true. To make no weapon with which one man may kill another. Never to use the One Power as a weapon except against Darkfriends or Shadowspawn, or in the last extreme defense of her life, the life of her Warder, or another Aes Sedai.
Aes Sedai can have elongated life spans even being able to live up to a couple hundred years. Unlike other women who can channel Aes Sedai develop an ageless look. In the books If you looked at an Aes Sedai you wouldn’t be able to guess their age. Though in the TV-Show that is difficult to represent using live actors.
Many kings or other rulers of nations will seek to have an Aes Sedai advisor, as they are know for wisdom and commanding nature just as much as their capacity to use the One Power.
There are 7 ajahs or groups in the the Aes Sedai orgaization. The Blue Ajah who are know to dedicate themselves to quests, Moiraine is of the Blue Ahah, The Grey Ajah who are diplomats, The Brown Ajah who are Scholars, The White Ajah who are know for the impartial logic, The Green Ajah who are known as the Battle Ajah and are also know for taking on multiple warders, The Red Ajah who hunt and stop men who can use the One Power, and Yellow Ajah who are the healers.
They all serve the White tower and the other Aes Sedai seeking to make the world a better place but do not always see eye to eye on how that is to be done.
The Leader of the Aes Sedai is know as the Amyrlin Seat. The Amylin is known by other honorifics such as the Flame of Tar Valon, but when you address her be you an accepted of the white tower, a peasant, or a King you call her Mother, and she will call you child.
The Aes Sedai maneuver kings, shape kingdoms, and prepare against the last battle where the Dragon Reborn will fight against the Dark One a force trying to end the Wheel of time. If the Dark One wins reality will end, if the Dragon Wins he will usher in a new age.
