More information about the video content bellow:
    1. New Caledonia is a special collectivity of France in the southwest Pacific Ocean, 1,210 km east of Australia. New Caledonia has a land area of 18,576 km2, a bit smaller than Wales. Its population of 268,767 consists of a mix of Kanak people (the original inhabitants of New Caledonia), people of European descent, Polynesian people, and Southeast Asian people.
    2. British explorer Captain James Cook was the first European to sight New Caledonia, on 4 September 1774, during his second voyage. He named it "New Caledonia", as the northeast of the island reminded him of Scotland. On 24 September 1853, under orders from Napoleon III, Admiral Febvrier Despointes took formal possession of New Caledonia, and Port-de-France (Nouméa) was founded on 25 June 1854. New Caledonia became a penal colony, and from the 1860s until the end of the transportations in 1897, about 22,000 criminals and political prisoners were sent to New Caledonia.
    3. The indigenous population or Kanak were excluded from the French economy and from mining work, ultimately confined to reservations. This sparked a violent reaction in 1878 as High Chief Atal of La Foa managed to unite many of the central tribes and launched a guerrilla war which cost 200 Frenchmen and 1,000 Kanaks their lives. The Kanak population declined from around 60,000 in 1878 to 27,100 in 1921, and their numbers did not increase again until the 1930s.
    4. Nouméa is the capital and largest city of the French special collectivity of New Caledonia. It is situated on a peninsula in the south of New Caledonia's main island, Grande Terre, and is home to the majority of the island's European, Polynesian, Indonesian, and Vietnamese populations, as well as many Melanesians, Ni-Vanuatu and Kanaks who work in one of the South Pacific's most industrialised cities.
    5. In 1946, New Caledonia became an overseas territory. By 1953, French citizenship had been granted to all New Caledonians, regardless of ethnicity. The European and Polynesian populations gradually increased in the years leading to the nickel boom of 1969-1972, and the Melanesians became a minority, though they were still the largest ethnic group. Between 1976 and 1988, conflicts between French government actions and the Kanak independence movement saw periods of serious violence and disorder, culminating in 1988 with a bloody hostage-taking in Ouvéa.
    6. The New Caledonian crow is an all-black, medium-sized member of the family Corvidae, native to New Caledonia. The New Caledonian crow is capable of tool use. They are able to make hooks. This species is also capable of solving a number of sophisticated cognitive tests which suggest that it is particularly intelligent. As a result of these findings, the New Caledonian crow has become a model species for scientists trying to understand the impact of tool use and manufacture on the evolution of intelligence.
    7. North of Koné, near the township of Voh, there’s a mangrove swamp which has developed some unusual natural designs. The most intriguing is a perfect heart shape, La Cœur de Voh (The Heart of Voh).

During French occupation to Algeria, around 2000 Algerian were deported to Caledonia and other islands because they refused the occupation and rebelled against the French, my great, great, great grand dad Ammar ben Talhi was deported there in 1892 and never heard of him, I'm always wondering if there are any descendants of him that we would like to know them, but as the French forced those deported to adopt new names we'll never know, which is a shame

The Algerian community live in a city call Bourail. A few miles away from Noumea. You can only find them there.

Why do you find it necessary to have music play in the background while you talk? It's distracting and noisy. But thanks for the vid - very informative!
