For some peculiar reason, I retain a mental image of a BEA Vanguard going in to land at Prestwick. while I was seated on the top deck of a number 9 tram.
Heathrow was a badly sited (for fog) RAF station. It was only government pressure to create a London Airport there. The fogs never went away and a/c were diverting to Northolt, Bovingdon, Stansted and Blackbushe.
Why was such a major airport developed so far from any major urban centre? Hangover from being built close to the coast for transatlantic arrivals in wartime?
Hangover from the war, plus the fact that it is very rarely if ever closed due to weather conditions. It was VERY busy up until the past 10/15 years. However, it is still used quite often by military.
I grew up in Prestwick and when I first flew to the US (1967) and some visits home after that I flew in and out of Prestwick. I am annoyed and wonder why this is no longer possible.?? Another annoyance is why does it bear the name Glasgow Prestwick Airport??? Yet another "The Prestwick Mystery" 2024??
Pathe being very outspoken! 👌
I live in prestwick and it’s very nice here still

At this time London Heathrow was being planned and built. When I was a kid Prestwick seemed to be the UK's second airport.
