    If you listen, you can hear the drummer finding that classic breakbeat. When he found it, James recognized it and said "...don't solo, just keep doing what ya got...cuz it's a motha". Boy was he ever right about that.

    Clyde Stubblefield is the "funky drummer". I marvel at not only the break but riding the cymbal with one hand and working the rest of the kit with the other. How about the organ player? I mean the whole damn band was just cracking. If this music is a part of your day, you are the 1%. This music stands on its own, despite it's wonderfully evolved renditions.

    James Brown was a just as great at composing music as he did anything else. Although his band was awesome, JB actually had the tune in his head and would tell each musician how to play it. He did it through just about all of his songs. How did this man come up with this music no one will understand---way ahead of his time as just about everything that we hear today has a little bit of the Godfather of Soul in it.

      Clyde Stubblefield created this! Not James! He didn't tell Clyde what to play. Fact!

    • @EDDSMITTY1
      @EDDSMITTY1 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bret Stubblefield Yes, you're correct when it comes to this particular song. Those drums are Clyde's and no one did it better. But, you can hear JB giving instruction to the other musicians before the break; as he's done with many of his songs. An example of this is the full version of a "Blind Man Can See It" from the Black Caesar soundtrack where he's telling the drummer how he wants the beat to sound like. Not taking anything away from Clyde at all.
      Besides; who could argue with a Stubblefield? Lol!

    • @sbretstacey
      @sbretstacey 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Gotcha bro. Your right also! I'm just talking about Clyde. He told me James never told him what to play.

    • @sbretstacey
      @sbretstacey 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Your all good bro! I can appreciate your insight to James and the band. Good info. I just see a lot of people saying James created this and that beat. Uncle Clyde said that Jabo played the rehearsed songs and Uncle Clyde played beats that inspired songs. UC told me that the reason some of the lyrics didn't make sense it's because UC made the grove and JB made up words for it! True story! I just want to reiterate that my Uncle was never told what to play in any song he did with James! I have my Uncle right hear to give me facts. I always enjoy a good conversation!

  • @NewarkChe
    @NewarkChe 11 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    James Brown is the organ player on this track. James was able to play many instruments but did not play any that often on his recordings. He did play organ on "Funky Drummer" and his groove is out-of-this-world! This is, without question, one of the funkiest tunes ever recorded. I believe that 200 years from now, this tune, along with many others Mr. Brown recorded, will be studied alongside Mozart, Bach, Coltrane, Wagner, Ellington, and Stravinsky. I believe it is already in such a category...

    This song was mainly used on "Rebel Without A Pause." This song and "The Grunt" by The J.B.'s. Both were the main samples used to bring the Public Enemy song to life. The Bomb Squad had a kickass production strategy when it came to creating a song. NO ONE could come close to touching it....NO ONE.

    Clyde Stubblefield - drums
    Stubblefield's recordings with James Brown are considered to be some of the standard-bearers for funk drumming, including the singles "Cold Sweat", "There Was A Time", "I Got The Feelin'", "Say It Loud - I'm Black and I'm Proud", "Ain't It Funky Now", "Mother Popcorn", and Sex Machine

    Hard to express in words how ridiculously amazing (and significant) this song is. Yah, the Funky Drummer break, of course. But so many other songs have taken influence without using that particular sample. Not to mention that there are dozens of other snippets, grunts, utterings, noises and other brief parts of the track that have been sampled over the years and used in other music, video games, television ads, movie trailers, radio segues, etc. Some people say "Amen Brother" is the most sampled song of all time, but when you take into consideration material outside of the FD break itself, it absolutely positively has to be this track.
    Fucking absolute legend.

    James Brown = one of the exceedingly small number of human beings to have visited this planet about whom it is very difficult to talk about in any meaningful sense -> correctly called the Godfather Of Soul

    Clyde Stubblefield invented "Funky Drummer" not James Brown! "Clyde Stubblefield." Black and I'm proud, give it up turn it loose, mother popcorn, sex machine, I got that feeling, can't stand it, ride the pony and a few more. His beat was the start of hip hop. Thanks for reading!

      +Bret Stubblefield I know. DJ Kool Herc, Gil Scott Heron and a few others are often name-checked, but this man - the funkiest drummer in history - is not. Galling! No relation, are you?

      +Ikem Nzeribe I just want people to know that the funky drummer is Clyde Stubblefield! W are trying to get him inducted into the Rock R.H.O.fame! He is a revolutionary drummer who contributed to almost every form of popular music! it's time to open the doors and put him and induct him into history!

      Bret Stubblefield Well, brother, you don't need to convince me! Every hip-hop head is thrilled at the mere mention of his name! The man is a rock, the foundation of our art. Pass the love onto the great man. It would be amazing if we could buy some merchandise or make a contribution or something more than a few words. Let me know if that's possible! It's the least I can do. As a community, we need to do more to support people like your uncle and put hands in pockets where need be. I'm just honoured I am speaking to somebody who knows him.

    is it just me or is it that the base is more mesmerizing? :)

      If by base you mean the base of the song - i.e. the drums - then yes. The bass is also amazing on this song. Too bad that bass line isn't one of the most sampled parts in hip hop.

      of course the bass is great - the only famous drum part is later on... 5:30
