  • See the oil leak on the timing magnets on an M271 engine and how the cam adjuster magnets are replaced. Also see how new protective cables are being installed which can prevent damage caused by oil leakage from the magnets.

The magnets need to be centered according to the Mercedes WIS manual. That is why the rubber caps can only be placed after the magnets are screwed down.

Hi, you are absolutely right that the wis manual says to center the solenoid.
"...Use a 6.0mm diameter twist drill.....Insert the spindle of the twist drill through the hole in the camshaft intake solenoid or the camshaft exhaust solenoid into the hole at the camshaft adjuster..." and then it's centered.
The whole point is that the solenoid must be centered so that the valve on the cam adjuster is not in direct contact with the solenoid and can thereby work freely. That's what I do, just with my method.
The problem is that it is actually very difficult to fit the rubber cap so that it is water and dustproof and does not fall out. Especially when there is no possibility to inspect from the inside. So you could say I choose a perfectly fitted rubber cap in exchange for a near perfectly centered solenoid and not the other way around. It's just my choice and my method.
At about. 11:52 in the video you can see that I spend time centering the solenoid based on the marks left on the engine from the old solenoid (and based on feel). I am within the accuracy that the drill bit method gives anyway.
If you are in doubt or if you are in the situation where there are no marks on the engine to adjust according to, then use the wis instructions and the method with the drill and possibly put adjustment marks on the engine so that you can follow my method again.
