I was just playing Rime of the Ancient Mariner (1984) and I think that was the Swan Song for Heavy Metal itself. That was September 1984 and while cutting edge at the time was obsolete by January 1985 when Ride the Lightning took the world by storm and Thrash Metal took over.

@Sir Norman I still think that Nightfall is their best overall album; yes there are some tracks on others that are as good, if not better, but taken as a complete "album" , they've never bested it.

Yeah man! That's a thoughtful list...I think that the only band that we would share on our top 10 bands list would be The Doors: The Doors. I wore the cassette tape out of my first copy of it. That was a brilliant album. The Who: Who's Next is fantastic too....as is Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. Other than their hits, the band you've listed that I'm least familiar with would be Boston. I really don't know a lot by that band.
If you love sticky fingers then you need to listen to teenage head by the flamin groovies. Mick was on record stating that teenage head is better than sticky. Came out in 1971 and to me, I like head slightly better due to the punk edge it has over sticky. Anyway, check it out now. You will be thankful
While it's true you'll gain a special appreciation for music because you were there when it came out, I think younger people can find appreciation for it in their own way. I'm a 20-year-old guy that listens to a lot of rock, especially from the late 60s and early 70s. I wasn't there when it was released. I've never heard it being played on the radio or had friends recommend it to me. What makes it unique to me is that I discovered it by myself. I remember distinctly how I watched a live performance of Led Zeppelin on youtube when I was 14, and it absolutely blew me away. I remember questioning myself, "where has this type of music been all my life?". Since then, I've used the internet to find the music I enjoy, using everything from music-streaming services to forums and youtube channels. And that's what brought me to this channel! I would just like to thank you for the content you make. It has given me so much music to explore and made me see it from a perspective I never would've otherwise. Cheers!

Same here! Please don't write us off. I can't stand the pop crap that is made today, so I can really appreciate that bands that actually knew how to play instruments.
I'm 21 and I can't help but feel Martin is a little disconnected. The hits from that album (which is most of it) still get played all the time and most people my age know and like those songs. The most common band T-shirt to see at my university is Led Zeppelin, easily. I don't really have a source for this but I'm pretty confident that music from the 70s is way more popular today than music from the 20s was in the 70s. Nobody my age finds rock music unfamiliar, despite the popularity of other stuff.
@@dremoralorde5215 I think it’s unfair to expect Martin to be connected with people our age. There’s probably too few that he interacts with. You are right about music in the 70s being more popular today than music from the 20s was in the 70s, but that’s because of accessibility and exposure due to technology. You can’t buy your groceries without hearing Zeppelin. People in the 70s weren’t listening to the Duke while they shopped for groceries. None of my friends find radio-“Dad Rock” or “Arena Rock” unfamiliar, but when I rip out some Rush, Savatage, Steve Vai or even anything off Thunder and Lightening people are shocked.

@@beetlebum7760 Honestly I feel like "Pet Sounds" should be in any music lover's top 10. Brian imo stands in the tradition of the great arrangers at Capitol of the 50s like Gordon Jenkins or Nelson Riddle, but he took it in a totally new direction, when he married the orchestral and big band palette of the 50s with the sound and instrumentarium of the surf bands of the early 60s, then added a bit of Spectoresque production and topped it all off with those Barbershop inspired vocal harmonies, that highlighted the once in a lifetime gorgeous vocal blend of his bros and company. That's just such a super cool eclectic combination of styles, just as cool and eclectic as the combination of instruments he used liked bowed double bass and electric bass, or organ and accordion, or harpsichord and ukulele, etc... And I haven't even mentioned yet his gifts as a song composer and writer of melody. No wonder Macca calls "Pet Sounds" his favourite album ever.
I have come to the conclusion that I can now create a drinking game for every time Pete mentions deep purple in Rock and Martin popoff mentions The clash London calling.

22 year-old here: most of my fave music is '70s stuff! Not that I have it out for what's come out in the last 30 years or so, but rather that there's so much to dig through in that decade. Or whatever the subjective topic that's being covered. But I learn a lot about bands I'm either unaware of, or ones I might've brushed off back in the day and never dug deeper into. It helps that Pete and Martin are not just a wealth of information, but, in my opinion, humble and good natured about what they share.

Alot of good music in the 10 and in your honorable mentions below. Getz Gllberto goes way back when i was age 5 and my dad played it on record player back then. It stuck in my head to get years later as I do have the vinyl these days of it. In 1967 I started collecting music. Cheers.

Wow. OK, my 10 favorite.....not necessarily the 10 "best" albums of all time. I limit myself to 1 per band/act. No compilations allowed: "The Wall" by Pink Floyd Led Zeppelin's debut Boston's debut (totally agree with Pete on this one. Takes me back....) "Quadrophenia" by The Who "Paranoid" by Black Sabbath "Screaming for Vengeance" by Judas Priest "Moving Pictures" by Rush The Cars debut Pretenders debut "Trick of the Tail" by Genesis Some of these I still listen to on a regular basis while some others (looking at you, Sabbath...) I probably never need to listen to again although as Pete alluded to, we don't always need to listen to it to love it. Some honorable mentions: "Ziggy Stardust..." from Bowie, Van Halen's debut, "Revolver" by the Beatles, "Born to Run" by Bruce, "London Calling" by The Clash, "Wildflowers by Tom Petty, "The Yes Album", "Crime of the Century" by Supertramp, "Fly Like and Eagle" by Steve Miller, "Aja" by Steely Dan, "It's Only Rock and Roll" by the Stones, Rainbow's debut, "Rust Never Sleeps" by Neil Young.

The Chameleons is SUCH a great band, when it comes to post punk it's always The Cure and Joy Division that get mentioned (and rightfully so), but there is so much more out there.
I haven't penned my top 10 favorite albums, but I'm glad you added the first Boston album to your top 10 because that album is one of the greatest albums of all time, and it deserves more love. I think maybe Boston might not be people's favorite bands, but that debut is just excellent. Not a bad song on it and all of them are played all over the radio. Some favorites of mine: Queensryche - Operation: Mindcrime Rush - Moving Pictures Black Sabbath - Vol. 4 (I agree, Pete, I feel alone on this) Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti Boston - Debut album Megadeth - Rust in Peace Van Halen - Debut album Iron Maiden - Powerslave Judas Priest - Stained Class Rainbow - Long Live Rock 'N' Roll I do like Savatage's Hall of the Mountain King and Gutter Ballet. Savatage is easily the most underrated metal band. I'm sure I can iron the top 10 when I get a chance.
My Top Ten Albums: 10) Nursery Cryme (Genesis), 09) Beggars Banquet (The Rolling Stones), 08) If I Could Do It All Over Again, I'd Do It All Over You (Caravan), 07) Physical Graffiti (Led Zeppelin), 06) Sweet Freedom (Uriah Heep), 05) Pronounced Leh-nerd Skin-nerd (Lynyrd Skynyrd), 04) Next (Sensational Alex Harvey Band), 03) Secret Treaties (Blue Öyster Cult), 02) Machine Head (Deep Purple), 01) Crime Of The Century (Supertramp). This list was, unsurprisingly, extremely difficult to put together and if I did it tomorrow or next week it might look slightly (or completely) different. 😓
What's happening to me is that at 54, I'm finding myself listening to a lot of the music from back in the 70's that I didn't listen to back in the day.

Popoff and Pardo are at it again and decide to take on the near impossible this week and to let us know they will do the impossible next week. A list of ten favorite albums? Tough but will just list the ten that come to mind. They may change but number one hasn't changed in almost 50 years. 10. Automatic For The People - R.E.M. 9. Billion Dollar Babies - Alice Cooper 8. Departure - Journey 7. Amadeus - The Complete Soundtrack Recording performed by Sir Neville Marriner & The Academy Of St. Martin In The Fields 6. Physical Graffiti - Led Zeppelin 5. Boston - Boston 4. Are You Experienced - The Jimi Hendrix Experience 3. Who's Next - The Who 2. Thick As A Brick - Jethro Tull 1. A Wizard, A True Star - Todd Rundgren Thanks, gents. For a fun episode. Always enjoy seeing Martin's picks during this type of episode. Now will start to work on my impossible list for next week. There ya go!
My top ten (off the top of my head): The Clash London Calling Ornette Coleman: In All Languages Stevie Wonder: Innervisions PJ Harvey: Rid Of Me Sonic Youth: Daydream Nation Jimi Hendrix Experience: Are You Experienced? Sleater-kinney: Dig Me Out Mahavishnu Orchestra: The Inner Mounting Flame Prince: Sign O The Times Captain Beefheart: Trout Mask Replica
I’m so happy I found Martin’s Collectors Guide to Heavy Metal back in the 90s. It turned me on to some of my favorite albums. His tastes nowadays don’t appeal to me now, so I’m glad I found the “heavy metal” Martin when I did. Changed my life.
@@independenceltd. I’m talking more about obscure metal albums like More-Blood and Thunder. Overdrive-Swords and Axes. Stuff like that. Albums that he almost assuredly would not give 10/10s to today. I have a ton of lesser known albums from reading that book that he gave 9s and 10s to that really blew my mind. All metal albums btw. I have a feeling if he wrote that book today and I was a relatively fledgling metalhead, those albums would pass me by. And that’s a shame.
@@steelerfreak1977 He has always said that our tastes evolve, which I think we're all aware of. I don't know if I've ever heard him say that he would downgrade an album, but I think I've heard him say that he'd probably give "The Number of the Beast" and "Appetite for Destruction" 8s instead of their original 7s. He still loves all of those old bands, especially More (which I find rather bland, honestly), as I've heard him mention them several times. Now Overdrive...that album smokes. Especially side two. Think I'll use that one tomorrow. Thanks for the reminder.
@@independenceltd. hey no problem! Oz-Fire in the Brain. The Torch ep and first album. Gillan. Riot-Fire Down Under. Samson-Shock Tactics. Raven- All For One. Man I could name stuff all day I probably wouldn’t have found it not for him.

My Top 10: 1. Highway to Hell - AC/DC 2. Sticky Fingers - The Rolling Stones 3. Synchronicity - The Police 4. Rio - Duran Duran 5. Abbey Road - The Beatles 6. Aladdin Sane - David Bowie 7. The Doors - The Doors 8. (What's the Story) Morning Glory? - Oasis 9. Appetite for Destruction - Guns N' Roses 10. Destroyer - Kiss
1. Black Sabbath "Sabotage" 2. Deep Purple "In Rock" 3. AC-DC "Let There Be Rock" 4. Metallica "Ride The Lightning" 5. Judas Priest "Unleashed in the East" 6. Motorhead "Ace of Spades" 7. Rainbow "Long Live Rock'n'Roll" 8. Twisted Sister "Under The Blade" 9. Black Sabbath "Heaven and Hell" 10. Eloy "Silent Cries and Mighty Echoes"
My top 10 has a few contrarian picks but here we go: 10 - UFO - Phenomenon (1974) - With all the great 70s records that I enjoy I think it's making a statement when over time this can be paired up against anything as one of the best of the decade. Borderline metal with some folk-ish rhythm playing and melodic shred from Schenker that ages incredibly well... The vibes from this album take you from corn fields to dark caverns... 9 - Whitesnake - Slip of the Tongue (1989) - A criticized album for Steve Vai's bombastic playing but a childhood favorite for me. I quite enjoy his playing, full of imagination and detail, sound effects and improvised fills... I also like the kind of subtle orchestra qualities and the songwriting in general. Great performance by Coverdale and I feel like hearing this on any rainy day. 8 - Rush - Caress of Steel (1975) - Lots of good things to say, but in a nutshell I like the pacing, the prog story-telling aspect and Alex Lifeson's work here even more so than normal, considering several Rush albums are just about equally good. 7 - Dokken - Back for the Attack (1987) - George Lynch is a top 5 guitarist and very influential for me. I've talked before about the song variety, the bass mix, the sheer amount of guitar fills and outros, not to mention some of my favorite guitar sounds ever. Total Lynch overkill!! It's probably one of the best lengthy albums of its time as well... 6 - Metallica - Ride the Lightning (1984) - To me the first thrash album that elevated the genre with style; the first time a group of people went more extreme than classic metal without losing finesse in my opinion. This was the prime of Metallica working their songs rather than procrastinating them... The opener is jaw-dropping when you first hear it and the title track is my favorite Metallica song. Songs like Escape are quite fun for me, they make the record lively. 5 - Megadeth - Peace Sells (1986) - This one always fascinated me for the sheer amount of musical content compressed into a little more than half an hour. It's a quick roller coaster ride that'll get you wanting to revisit it all the time. Riff machine, with Chris Poland's unique style as an added bonus and probably a good chunk of Mustaine's best solos. Wake Up Dead is probably a top 5 opener. 4 - Van Halen - 5150 (1986) - This one's controversial for the Van Hagar haters, but this is an album from a top 3 favorite band with arguably my favorite songs. Insane and under-appreciated riffing from Eddie and drumming from Alex. Any other band doing this and it might have been called a best-ever hard rock debut, fm radio masterpiece or borderline prog (see the title track). Plus, it's Eddie. 3 - Judas Priest - Stained Class (1978) - The definitive classic metal album. Beyond the Realms of Death is the metal ballad on which all metal ballads seem to come from. Not gonna go off about every track, but let's just say that it's timeless because if you down-tune every song and produce them to modern standards, it's still one of the most metal things ever because of every little progression and note choice. Highly intellectual. 2 - Judas Priest - Defenders of the Faith (1984) - I don't listen to this everyday but I definitely could. It's the relentlessness of JP's 80s period, with a darker atmosphere and classical music- inspired bits everywhere. Glenn and KK give everyone their fill with some of the best dual lead guitar work. A few of my favorite Priest tracks here- particularly on side one, and honestly side two just gets better with time. Defenders can also be considered an early percursor to the savage Pain Killer album, you can hear bits of that all over the place. 1- Pantera - Cowboys from Hell (1990) - This is the album that definitively made me want to actually grind to learn guitar. An easy #1 for me because previous ones may be perfect albums, but to me this is a perfect album and a half. My least favorites could make half a perfect album, no joke. Solos that I've gotten chills from, riffing that combines thrash with an almost Diary of a Madman-ish classic metal and massively overlooked drumming from Vinnie Paul are just a few qualities. The drum sound is brutal and the fills seem like something that should be talked about more often... I love every Pantera album but this sounds more like a deliberate masterpiece than all of the other ones...
Pete Pardo and Rick Beato, the 'go to' guys for 70's and 80's Rock. Go guys and of course Martin Popoff rocks! My top ten LP's? A truly tough but great question to ask, still here goes; #1) *LA Woman* The Doors, #2) *Led Zeppelin IV* #3) *Hunky Dory* David Bowie, #4) *Sgt Peppers* The Beatles, #5) *Kimono my House* Sparks, #6) *Remain In Light* The Talking Heads #7) *Seasons in the Abyss* Slayer, #8) *Rain Dogs* Tom Waits, #9) *Band of Gypsies* Jimi Hendrix, #10) *Dark Side of the Moon* Pink Floyd. ALL PERFECT LP'S!
I love to watch your Fridays videos with Martin at night when I'm tucked in my bed for good night viewings. A perfect way to end the Friday for me. That Pete Townshend album is my fav of him, almost made it in my list too. This is a difficult topic, so many albums to choose from. Honestly, a top ten doesn't cut it for me, a top 30, top 50 perhaps, but here it is, a list of the ones that are close to my immediate memory, I'll be remembering much more later, I'm sure: 1. Sgt. Pepper, The Beatles 2. The Lamb Lies Down, Génesis 3. Lateralus, Tool 4. Low (RYKO edition), David Bowie 5. Sailing to Philadelphia, Mark Knopfler 6. Dark Side of the Moon, Pink Floyd 7. Tug of War, Paul McCartney 8. So, Peter Gabriel ( I was tempted to put my longtime fav, 3, but So really made a phenomenal impact in my life and my appreciation for music). 9. Songs of faith and devotion, Depeche Mode 10. Walkie Talkie, AIR.
Dave, I've got a great idea for a show topic for you guys! How about one on the GREATEST albums that "never were." I'm thinking "Smile" by the Beach Boys, or the failed Yes "Paris Sessions," or the Kansas album that fell apart after Steve Walsh left, etc... Many of these are extant in rare demo tracks, some have seen bits and pieces find the light of day, but it would be cool to cover some of these as many represent "Holy Grails" to collectors. I believe ELO intended both "Time" and "Secret Messages" to be double albums, but they were truncated into single albums. There were quite a few other albums that fell apart in the studio as band members fought and broke up, resulting in abandoned projects.
You're never too old or young to hear new music. Many people enjoy music decades before they're were born. Parents and friends influence music tastes Now the internet is the key player (Didn't exist when I was growing up) and gives access to any artist...
1. Queensryche - Operation Mindcrime
2. Opeth- Blackwater Park
3 Black Sabbath - (could pick any first 6 or first Dio) . Mob Rules
4 Mastodon - Crack the Skye
5 Judas Priest - Stained Class
6 Iron Maiden (Any First 6) Powerslave
7 Slayer Reign in Blood
8 Dio Holy Diver
9 Savatage Hall of the Mountain King
10 Rush Moving Pictures
Opeth Black Water Park ... absolutely glorious. Nice call
Black Water Park easily in my top 10. Phenomenal album.
I was just playing Rime of the Ancient Mariner (1984) and I think that was the Swan Song for Heavy Metal itself. That was September 1984 and while cutting edge at the time was obsolete by January 1985 when Ride the Lightning took the world by storm and Thrash Metal took over.
1. Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd
2. Close to the Edge - Yes
3. Boston - Boston
4. Heaven & Hell - Black Sabbath
5. Houses of the Holy - Led Zeppelin
6. Space Ritual - Hawkwind
7. Piece of Mind - Iron Maiden
8. Born to Run - Bruce Springsteen
9. Moving Pictures - Rush
10. Nightfall in Middle Earth - Blind Guardian
At the moment, can change in the next hour.
@Sir Norman I still think that Nightfall is their best overall album; yes there are some tracks on others that are as good, if not better, but taken as a complete "album" , they've never bested it.
You guys have gotten me interested because I have never even heard of this band!
My 10
10. Heart Dreamboat Annie
9. Pink Floyd Dark Side Of The Moon
8. The Doors The Doors
7. Rolling Stones Sticky Fingers
6. The Beatles Abbey Road
5. Boston Boston
4. The Rolling Stones Exile On Main Street
3. The Beatles Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band
2. The Who Who;'s Next
1. Led Zeppelin Physical Graffiti
Dreamboat Annie is one of the greatest debuts for me, nice choice!
Black Sabbath!
Great list!
Cheers!

I am a twenty year old and I freiken LOVE Boston’s debut🙌🏻
Same here! Please don't write us off. I can't stand the pop crap that is made today, so I can really appreciate that bands that actually knew how to play instruments.
How can you not? It's timeless.
Literally every song is great. It’s one of my favorite records I own.

Love it when Martin is on ... I then know we're in for some choice Punk Rock! And the facial expressions you get from Pete when the Sex pistols, Clash And the Romones come up in topic. Kudos Martin love your taste and punk rock
Except I had half a punk rock record here. But soon would be the first Clash, a couple Damned and the Pistols. Then soon Eternally Yours from The Saints. The Jam with one or two, but that's not punk.
@@MartinPopoff I had always neglected Give Em Enough Rope, I always thought it was more or less The Clash part 2 but not quite as good and with less punk fury. I even listened to Sandinista more often. Thanks to your high ranking that has changed since yesterday, I really enjoyed my first couple of spins. Also listened to These Trails which I really like. Looking forward to The Chameleons and the Waterboys, as well as Scary Monsters, which are all new to me.
@@beetlebum7760 The Waterboys are beyond Spectacular... Mike Scott is simply brilliant..
I'm firmly on team Peter, Punk is one of the genres I genuinely disdain. For whatever reason it never resonated with me
@@kinesjl I never cared much for it either.I don't like the Damned as much as Martin, though they were one of my favorites when i was in high school..Other than them I think the only punk in my collection is the first Adam And The Ants album ,three by Ramones and their 2CD Anthology.

wow thank u
The Chameleons is SUCH a great band, when it comes to post punk it's always The Cure and Joy Division that get mentioned (and rightfully so), but there is so much more out there.
Script of a Bridge (1983) is such a great album from them. A View To A Hill is one of those songs that makes me sad
Some favorites of mine:
Queensryche - Operation: Mindcrime
Rush - Moving Pictures
Black Sabbath - Vol. 4 (I agree, Pete, I feel alone on this)
Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti
Boston - Debut album
Megadeth - Rust in Peace
Van Halen - Debut album
Iron Maiden - Powerslave
Judas Priest - Stained Class
Rainbow - Long Live Rock 'N' Roll
I do like Savatage's Hall of the Mountain King and Gutter Ballet. Savatage is easily the most underrated metal band. I'm sure I can iron the top 10 when I get a chance.

Thanks, gents. For a fun episode. Always enjoy seeing Martin's picks during this type of episode. Now will start to work on my impossible list for next week. There ya go!
My top ten (off the top of my head):
The Clash London Calling
Ornette Coleman: In All Languages
Stevie Wonder: Innervisions
PJ Harvey: Rid Of Me
Sonic Youth: Daydream Nation
Jimi Hendrix Experience: Are You Experienced?
Sleater-kinney: Dig Me Out
Mahavishnu Orchestra: The Inner Mounting Flame
Prince: Sign O The Times
Captain Beefheart: Trout Mask Replica
I’m so happy I found Martin’s Collectors Guide to Heavy Metal back in the 90s. It turned me on to some of my favorite albums. His tastes nowadays don’t appeal to me now, so I’m glad I found the “heavy metal” Martin when I did. Changed my life.
Go look at his "favorites" lists in the back. You'll find The Damned, The Clash, The Waterboys, etc.

Good to see Long Live Rock and Roll over Rising. I always preferred it. Came very close to my picks. Kill the King alone is worth the admission
Under the Blade - great pic!
My top 10 has a few contrarian picks but here we go:
10 - UFO - Phenomenon (1974) - With all the great 70s records that I enjoy I think it's making a statement when over time this can be paired up against anything as one of the best of the decade.
Caress and phenomenon are classics
Can’t stand Rick Beato.
@@sspbrazil Who cares!
@@donneumann6546 me, I care. lol.
Agreed. It's nice getting musical perspectives from both sides of the spectrum. Pete being a music consumer and Rick being a music producer.
@@killerdude35 I would rather listen to an interview with John Leckie for that perspective.
I love to watch your Fridays videos with Martin at night when I'm tucked in my bed for good night viewings. A perfect way to end the Friday for me.
That Pete Townshend album is my fav of him, almost made it in my list too.
This is a difficult topic, so many albums to choose from. Honestly, a top ten doesn't cut it for me, a top 30, top 50 perhaps, but here it is, a list of the ones that are close to my immediate memory, I'll be remembering much more later, I'm sure:
1. Sgt. Pepper, The Beatles
2. The Lamb Lies Down, Génesis
3. Lateralus, Tool
4. Low (RYKO edition), David Bowie
5. Sailing to Philadelphia, Mark Knopfler
6. Dark Side of the Moon, Pink Floyd
7. Tug of War, Paul McCartney
8. So, Peter Gabriel ( I was tempted to put my longtime fav, 3, but So really made a phenomenal impact in my life and my appreciation for music).
9. Songs of faith and devotion, Depeche Mode
