Your Rabbit Does NOT Need Bedding

  • It's a common question from new rabbit caretakers, "do I need bedding for my rabbit?" The answer is no! Even though the packaging often has a rabbit on it, bedding is not necessary for rabbits and is much more of a hindrance than a help.

I have been going through that realization for months. When I first got my rabbit we use the bedding, but like you said, he just ended up digging it out. Now there’s a towel if he wants to use it, and I just use that bedding for litter. I find it works really great for that. And I know it’s been said before, but God your channel is so underrated I have learned so much from it probably more than any other resource, and I have used quite a few resources over the last months.

Thank you for sharing these ideas! Much appreciated! I have a cardboard box that they use to go in hide in if they want (I have two brothers) and they sometimes sleep on top of the box, which is much softer than the floor, so this is their preference. I'm going to also get them a hammock. One of my bunny brothers is an adventurer, so the hammock would be an adventure for him more than just another place to sleep. Although they both get plenty of adventure. They sleep and eat inside in a very large cage and then every day we either bring them out to the porch or an outdoor grassy run we created so they can run around and do binkies. We bring them outside around 6pm when it's cooled down outside but before the mosquitos come out. We also have chicken wire as a roof for the outdoor grassy run because we have hawks. Thanks again and God bless!

Thankfully, I work from home and my bun is by my side constantly (ues even when I go to bathroom)...my sleeptime, brings extreme love bombing...lol. I am groomed every night. Soo sweet. Oh my goodness. I can’t imagine not using bedding in my buns litter box. Having to use a towel or sheet every time I clean the liter is way too much work and washing. My buns lay/sleep on blankets, not the bedding. They are completely liter trained, and cleaning it just a matter of dumping it in a large trash bag and that’s it. I guess to each their own on this one.

I use it for litter. It's easier to get than the other stuff you mentioned recycled paper cat litter. Plus I clean it out every other day. I don't have the luxury to use towels ( I can only do laundry on weekends). Plus he likes to chew on them and I can't keep them in his cage without fear of him eating it. As for where mine sleep, he likes a dog bed. He uses the edge as a pillow. Mostly during the day I'll find him in his hut laying on the bed. At night he'll sleep on the hard floor. He also likes grass straw mats to sleep on.

I use horse stall pellets aka compressed/pelletized pine wood pellets as a thin layer on the bottom of my bunnies' litterboxes and since they don't like the feeling of poky wood pellets on their feet, I put a small amount of hay on top. Their litter boxes eventually get more and more hay on top of the wood pellets, and then I clean them out every few days.

I’ve always used something like flannel for my bunnies bottom of their crates. They constantly chew it up or dig it out of the way so they can lay on the hard plastic. I always thought that had to be so uncomfortable! We use wood pellets for litter and I have a few small pieces of flannel or fleece or towels laid out around the crate if they want it! Most of the time they opt to lay on the cold hard plastic 🤦🏽‍♀️. They both free roam (separately bc one female would legit kill the other) and even still, they choose to sit in front of the fan or sit against the cold window! Such precious little babies!

I only used paper bedding for a small period as litter for them. Then switched to small pet select wood pellet litter, after that, just stopped using litter because my bunnies will DIG and DIG at the litter, regardless at the time, and much prefer the large amounts of hay on their puppy pads. And boy do they love flat surfaces. I have a shelf, a four tier shelf, that holds most of my stuff, but the very bottom has a cushion and a fleece blanket over it as a hidey spot for them. But Xiao Wu LOVES laying on our vent because it's made of metal and really cool when it starts getting hot in the house. Tu Shen will flop just about anywhere he wants, even at my feet.

A sheet towel just traps moisture and stink smells of the rabbit, grass bedding brings bugs ad mice.
I use soft insulation foam roll and foam puzzle mats.
I had a domestic rabbit dumped on property. Made it a shelter out of old foam cooler and scrap ply wood wrap coveing. Then put old foam puzzle mat and soft insulation foam roll crumpled up on inside. This insulates it and is soft. And to clean just spray wipe it. These materials don't trap moisture, stink smells, and won't bring bugs, mice.

I have a question so in my rabbits cage I can just place a towel on the flooring and could she pee on that poo on it as well and then i just wash it so basically what you are saying that instead of shavings i could just place a towel in her cage?

I was a bit confused bc I use hay and bedding and a pee pad only in my rabbit’s litter box. I don’t use it outside of their litter box or any of that. I clean her box each week cause she doesn’t soil it very fast. I just have a mini dog bed, a shirt of mine, and a blanket from my rats one for comfort and two to get used to our smells. Otherwise I let her have the cold floor nice and open for her to hop, lay down, binki, stand on her hind legs etc. she sometimes dogs in her litter box but out of the month I’ve had her in a playpen, instead of a hutch (which I will never put her in again) she’s only dug in her box 2-3 times. It doesn’t bother her, it’s one of her favorite places to be in her pen. So I wasn’t sure if you meant don’t have bedding for the pen and everything else or just the pen? If you could clear that up for me, that would be awesome!

What about the pine pellets from Tractor Supply? I have been getting good results with those pellets but now I am getting worried they could be bad for my bunny. I recently bought 2 bags

Does this advice apply to outdoor bunnies as well? We are in winter time right now in the Pacific Northwest. I currently use hay on the top layer as bedding and straw on the bottom layer. I feel like I want to keep something down for them. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

My rabbits make their own bedding by shredding and destroying the rugs and carpets I put in for them.

My rabbits prefer grass or dirt. Dust baths are common as well.

Yes but you do need bedding for outside rabbits in hutches.

My bunnies love to sleep on their aspen shavings. They will work on them until they make a nice nest with them.

I always found that wood shavings is the worst bedding for rabbits because it gets stuck to their butts and so puts them at a higher risk of flystrike. My rabbits free roam but I use shredded paper for their litter trays and clean it daily and give them their hay in cardboard boxes.

I can’t believe you used towels and rugs for the bunny enclosure because they chew on everything and it can both have a blockage in their stomachs and intestines if they eat the towel or the rug

Our rabbit used to use the litter box but now she destroys her cage by moving her litter box and peeing or pooping on the rubber based mats we have. It’s not a daily thing we have to strip her pen of the mats ash everything. Any advice?

I use plain white bedding in her litter box only. I clean it every 1-3 days. She free roams my house. I was so worried for a second when I saw the title.

I am trying to locate bedding info for baby rabbits, no fur yet. Not a breeder. I found them in a shallow nest. Seems they would have drown with the rain we've been having.

i get confused about putting hay in the litter box. would they not just pee on it? i put my hack on a rack in front of his litter box but not inside. do they know better not to eat the pee pee covered stuff? i totally agree with the no bedding tho. i tend to use a fleece towel. i bought a tone of them from the dollar store and swap them out. if they get really covered i just throw them out. could even go buy fabric and have an endless supply.

Thank you, how do I get my Bunny to eat pellets without pooping please? I resorted to putting her bowl of pellets in her litter box which worked great but I want to eventually use a forage mat but can't cuz she poops and pees all over it
