  • USF handles much of their own waste with these two PT 1000s. The PT 1000 is heavily derived from the Formula 4000. Cylinders all around, from tailgate lift to packer to ejector, are identical on both models, as is the distinctive slide panel arrangement. The PT 1000 gains 1/3yd of hopper capacity with a larger sweep blade, and it's hydraulics are run at higher pressure for a bit more compaction. Everything is wrapped up in a sleek smooth side body and tailgate.
What strikes me as odd is that it looks like each of USF's buildings arranges for it's own collection; some buildings are serviced by the school's own Physical Plant department while others have dumpsters from various Tampa haulers. The campus is easily large enough for the school to bring all collection in-house, providing their own trucks and dumpsters. Wouldn't take much, another rear loader or two with kick bars and larger bodies (say 25yds), and a few dozen 2yd RL dumpsters. They would get much better service than outside contractors provide, could almost certainly do it cheaper, and could take the opportunity to push for more recycling and higher diversion rates.
Thanks to the super cool drivers, my man Marion on recycle and Jose on trash, and to Alan for the idea to film these trucks. You can find his video of the Sterling doing trash on his channel, FormerWMDriver. Filmed July 2013.
