"But I hear sounds in my mind, brand new sounds in my mind" as the song shifts to a piano beat she's never used before. She's literally telling us that she's evolving into new territory as an artist with this record. Also take into account the fact that she's 20 years old now, and with that comes the excitement of taking on the world as a young adult. This makes me think about college nights, when you felt like you had the green light to do anything you wanted before sunrise. She was still a teenager when she wrote Pure Heroine, and I think it's naturally a darker record because you feel kind of trapped and broody during those years of your life. When you come of age, there's an intoxicating freedom to it initially, especially in her case as a successful singer with money and credentials. To me this song represents that excitement, a starry-eyed lust to celebrate the beginning of the rest of her life. I'm so curious to hear the rest of the album, and I'm excited for her that she wants to show us this new energy!
My favorite thing is when people complain about a change in music style, and then when an artist doesn't change their style those same people complain that it is boring.

The last 40s actually sounds like Nine Inch Nails. He often had this thing where some kinda anthemic synth comes in towards the end. NIN's last-album-so-far was kinda happy actually
Some people complain because this sounds different than before. Here's some food for thought for you: David Bowie, the music legend himself, called Lorde "The future of music." Bowie was notorious for being a chameleon. Every one of his projects, from Ziggy Stardust to The Labyrinth, feel completely unique. They are all different and capture a different side of Bowie, but he is still present in all of these. They are different, but still cohesive. How does this tie into Lorde? Even though this is different, it's just a page from Bowie's book. It may be different than Pure Heroine, but that doesn't mean she's selling out. This is just another aspect of her, while still bursting from her own mind. Let's not bash her change in direction. Instead, let's celebrate that she's not going to stay in a niche simply because fans want her to. She's still exploring, and I'm excited to see where the path leads.
Far out, I grew up with this chick in school, not that we were friends but it's so nice seeing her doing what she loves and being so fucking happy about it. Go Ellaaaaaaaaa
This song is weirdly aesthetic. When everything seems to be closing in and makes me feel trapped, this song liberates me; provides an escapade. Edit: Thanks for the 1k likes, my first time ever. More power to you all!
IT's definitely more than just an escape, it's an invitation of a lifestyle! Listen to the lyrics, it describes not just and idea but a story and reflection! This means Lorde has probably got the lyrics from personal experience. Experiencing someone else's thoughts or ideas is pretty cool, eh?
The song represents, to me anyway, of getting out of a relationship with a person you thought you’d be with forever at the start and the other person has moved on ( she thinks you love the beach....) and the green light is the metaphor for being able to finally move on and let go of that person you loved so much and it’s the feeling of knowing you need to let go and just waiting till you can finally give up.
yall shes said in interviews (this morning on triple j in australia) that her album is a mix of her old and new style of music. she's very particular and LOVES to perfect the beat and rhythm of her songs -- base sound to her is very important. her album is going to have aLOT of her original style as well as the new (which imo, is still really good!) artists evolve! but she's said herself that she still very much has, and loves, the slow soft beats we got in pure heroine

Lorde is so talented...Green Light is an amazing song with poetic lyrics and inspired music..the bridge of the song is one of the most adequate, compelling and moving I can remember, and I am 66 years old and listened & played tons of music.Lorde is a reference
The refrain has less melody than her last album. But this energy is very refreshing. The pre-chorus is my favorite part of the song, and the verses are incredibly intricate rhyming schemes on top of a very complex melody. I'm in love with this song. I believe the Title is a reference to 'Gatsby' and his Green Light. The theory behind it is probably that the Green light that Lorde is waiting for will never come. That's why the video ends with a sensation of despair and confusion. Gatsby's green light was a metaphor for the future that is always out of reach, and the goal of happiness that is actually unattainable. Beautiful music, beautiful girl. She's growing up, and she's so sexy!! I am too excited for June.
She denied it referenced Great Gatsby, but the normal traffic light (hence the "I'm waiting for it, that green light, I want it", she's waiting for the guy to call her to come over). It's about her break up with her former boyfriend and letting go, moving out of the house and becoming an adult. She said it's about that girl crying on the dancefloor about her ex.
here's a weird thing. I just did some research. Traffic lights were an American invention, specifically by the city of Cleveland. A Traffic light system was implemented in New York in 1918. The Great Gatsby is set in New York, an written in 1925. Fitzgerald literally watched green lights get invented. And then he made a green light the central theme of his novel. Do what you will with that information. :)
I love this interpretation! It fits the music's theme because the song, to me, albeit sounding so joyous, is actually quite sad as she's waiting for her guy to give her the green light and he never does. She keeps waiting, she gets her things, acknowledging the end, but she can't let go, and that messes her up.
Her music tends to feel really expansive and epic. The piano, take, is like opening up this big world she created and I think her dancing, which everyone mocks, actually is really in tune with this idea. There's sounds like this on each song, where it feels like it's building, metaphorically building herself up (the message of the whole album). The Louvre has that Flume-produced chorus section, Sober with that subtle pounding beat before the drop, Hard Feelings when it starts to distort, etc. She's so incredibly talented.
dude this song gives me full body chills, it makes me want to jump up and down, and i feel electric. amazing beautiful song, truly a work of art. she is so unique and nothing like i’ve heard before, that’s what makes her special. spectacular and amazingly immaculate
i cant comprehend how people are saying that this sounds generic. To me, it has a clear classic Lorde vibe to it in the lyrics and in the beat of the chorus especially, and it doesnt sound like anything on the radio right now. That being said, you can tell shes been experimenting with other sounds, which i love, and i think that she made it work out amazingly. This is what quality pop sounds like.
Agreed. Just because something has a catchy, pumped-up beat doesn't make it generic! Of course Robyn is the comparison everyone is making, but I think it's a good one. Robyn is emotional, original, and doesn't get old despite seeming fairly boring upon initial inspection. Good job, Lorde!
Completely disagree with lots of people here, I think this song is really complex - very robyn-esque with an upbeat poppy song but sad and powerful lyrics underneath. Definitely did not disappoint, she's evolving as an artist!
+Jesus Lopez Robyn is a Swedish pop star whose music often has a dance, synth, background beat. If you watch the Call Your Girlfriend video, you'll see how Robyn's dancing might have influenced some of the visuals in this video :)
For those of you who are complaining that Lorde sold out or fell into the pop machine, this is far from manufactured pop. This track has 4 different melodies that blend well into each other. A song this complex is nowhere close to manufactured pop. This is closer to indie pop than straight up pop. She's also 20, there's no way she's gonna write the same music as 16.
JMLRH lol I'm not explaining just because it's Lorde. I'm explaining because many people don't understand that pop has many subgenres and you can't just categorize it all as "machine manufactured pop"

she released "Pure Heroine" in 2013 and she released "Melodrama" in 2017. That is a four year gap. If she follows this four year gap, THEN A NEW ALBUM IS COMING 2021, THIS YEAR
the way she sings in this track is an aggressive way but somehow holding back a bit of emotions. its breathtaking. not only that, but the beginning of the music video where shes looking towards the camera but not directly at it gives me a sense of mystery and curiousity, making me want to hear more of her words
I can admit it....this song is actually....really good... The lyrics are fantastic, the musical choices made within the song are perfection, the musical build-up towards the end...just wow!
HaleyVic17 she's the greatest pop artist of all time, her lyrics mean so much more than anyone else's and she's so much closer to us and the lyrics in principal are so different from anyone else's and they're so poetic

Ribs is like the end of your childhood and being sad but also coming to terms with it and Green light is like the next step and being okay that it’s okay and being excited more than ever to live your adult life and the freedom it comes with
"I realized this is that drunk girl at the party dancing around crying about her ex-boyfriend who everyone thinks is a mess. That’s her tonight and tomorrow she starts to rebuild. And that’s the song for me." Lorde is my spirit animal
When I first heard this, I didn't know how I felt about it, but I heard it a few more times, and then I couldn't stop listening to it throughout the night while doing my work. I kept getting up and dancing at the chorus. I was literally having the time of my life at the almost subtle drop. I understand if this isn't your type of music, but to be honest, this is literally giving me life. At 0:50 when you think the chorus will begin, but it gets slow and its the pre-chorus, I honestly love it because it teases you. And can we just talk about the lyrics in the refrain?! So good! If your not into pop, not sure if you'll like this, but I love it because it's different than a lot of other songs coming out right now. Pure Heroine was amazing, but I think this is going to be a different album, but different in a good, exciting way.
Tramp Oline she confirmed in an interview that she was taking all that time to make this album different from Pure Heroine and also confirmed that not all the songs are like Green light so everyone who is disappointed with Green Light don't worry ;) P.S I'm not one of those lol I'd give a thumbs up even if lorde farts and records it
Exactly. and it's not that far from what she did in the past. If you want more of the same, the music industry is saturated with generic pop just for you ;)
She hasn't released anything in 3 years and she comes back better than before. She must've took time off to find who she is before coming back in the music industry. She has a new sound, a new look, and new beats. I love this new Lorde.
Timothy Ryan A brand new sound from mind :v She's growing to adult now Even tho I used to be a hater cause Royals, now I'm not hating anymore But I'm not a fans yet Will she release a new album?
Lorde knows how to craft a pop song. she also knows how to craft songs that have more meaning and purpose than to give a beat to dance to, as is evident in Pure Heroine. it's unfair to judge her album-to-come on this one song. PH had the token party song (Royals), and by the looks of it, this next album will have one too with this song. i anticipate whatever else her next album has to offer
Hey Lorde fans! I have just released my selfmade debut album CRASTI LAND a few weeks ago. I wonder if her magenta dress was chosen purposefully for the green light. Magenta and Green are opposites in the world of optics. when magenta is placed under green light, it would appear black.
Black Horse you know that she is in fact wearing make up right? It's more gold and shinny, rather than the dark one she used to wear, and honestly I think she looks so good, she seems more young and comfortable? and her hair is probs like that bc she has to look like she went partying, and most woman with curly hair either make their hair straight or they try to tame their curls. Sorry for this long reply and my English, and I ho pe you have a wonderful day/night
Really she is the future, she is music, soul, hard feelings, inspiration, poems, pain, euphoria, desire to scream, dance, feel, she is simply everything.
She’s perhaps the most influential performer who’s been to all the stadiums in the country in the past past 15 years as in as an actual real performer, you know in all the stadiums
Lorde has her own style, her own attitude towards things, her beauty. And it's unique, and people hating below are the ones who are addicted to one kind of pop.
And this is what fans do, they react to what they think about the songs. If people don't like it I think it's fair to express that. That being said, I do like this.
if she released a 'dark' track everyone would be saying that they want her to switch it up/something different... artists cannot please everyone. she is growing as an artist and evolving. this is only ONE track (which i personally love) and i am very excited to see what her sophomore album holds.
I don't know who she is (I heard this on Hollyoaks tonight) but people seem to miss her. For those who do check out Thelma Plum, her Full Set live at One Night Stand 2024. She's the future of music.
The voice in this song isn't the high-pitched revengeful one like "My life is so perfect without you, I have a much better boyfriend than you, my life is way more glamorous without you". The one in this piece is a voice that shouts "my life is a mess, and I love it as it is, because I finally love myself and I don't need anyone to dance on my own celebrating who I am". It's not about partying over the perfect life, It's about celebrating our mistakes and disappointments and the wonderful act of celebrating everything anyways, even if things aren't perfect.

This song is weirdly aesthetic. When everything seems to be closing in and makes me feel trapped, this song liberates me; provides an escapade.
Edit: Thanks for the 1k likes, my first time ever. More power to you all!
It drives me into different emotions from sad to happy to sad to angry to happy like wtf is it just me?
Well said, I feel it too
IT's definitely more than just an escape, it's an invitation of a lifestyle!
Lorde is an aesthetic goddess
7th anniversary and still sounds fresh, Lorde is so talented ❤
yall shes said in interviews (this morning on triple j in australia) that her album is a mix of her old and new style of music. she's very particular and LOVES to perfect the beat and rhythm of her songs -- base sound to her is very important. her album is going to have aLOT of her original style as well as the new (which imo, is still really good!) artists evolve! but she's said herself that she still very much has, and loves, the slow soft beats we got in pure heroine
THIS
I am excited for the new style but what she sings about, which i am here for, seems like has changed :(

Melodrama is a masterpiece! Glad it found you
same!
Im an oldschool heavy metal dude but female vocalists are sometimes just beautiful theyre my weakness haha. Regina Spektor is also alright
Same bro
yup! metalhead here too, but we all need a lil dancey dance song every once in a while and lorde does it pretty well!
In any case, in both interpretations, they actually mean the same thing. She's a genius.
Ana Paiva actually the green light is about her letting go?
here's a weird thing.
She's so incredibly talented.
ok man
I like that her dancing is so unapologetically white. Lol.
Yes, works really well for the AFL highlights and scenes after the game.

i cant comprehend how people are saying that this sounds generic.
Good job, Lorde!
i literally grew up with lorde. i’ll never forget her, or her influence. her music has grown with me. thank you lorde🍀
Legit one of the best pop songs I've ever heard. Emotional. Anthemic. Catchy. Timeless. Her talent is unreal

Eva Zhu Exactly ! she said herself this was cathartic pop
No its plain pop i dont get the extraness in explain this song's genre just because its Lorde. This song is a fucking bop though
the structure of this song is too familiar with pop we known
JMLRH lol I'm not explaining just because it's Lorde. I'm explaining because many people don't understand that pop has many subgenres and you can't just categorize it all as "machine manufactured pop"
She also kept traces of her style. The way vocals are overlayered.

Will she release a new album?
Lorde knows how to craft a pop song. she also knows how to craft songs that have more meaning and purpose than to give a beat to dance to, as is evident in Pure Heroine. it's unfair to judge her album-to-come on this one song. PH had the token party song (Royals), and by the looks of it, this next album will have one too with this song. i anticipate whatever else her next album has to offer
it's also important to keep in mind that Lorde went through different things in her life to inspire both albums. the subject matter is shifting

It's not about partying over the perfect life,
It's about celebrating our mistakes and disappointments and the wonderful act of celebrating everything anyways, even if things aren't perfect.
