A couple of other factors worth noting that was too 'deep' for this intentionally-simplified video...
    Physical factors:
    1. Low(er) curvature of the wall
    2. Suitable stiffness of the wall
    3. Sufficient gap between the tires and the wall
    4. Shape of the body
    Tactical factors:
    1. Large speed differential between straight and turn
    2. Short straights
    3. Low banking
    4. Sufficiently clear traffic

I think it was more like "WAAATCH THIS!
I agree. Coming from shifter carts where we pull 4-5 g's on every corner and use a flack jacket to keep from breaking our ribs that was a huge g forge in the 5 - 6 area easily and could have had a 10G shock at the very end. where it looked like the wall tightens up a little and the tires lit up. He might have won if the 9 was not in hos way. Good analysis though

@@fladave99 Yeah by my math, he was near 6G's when he entered the corner. That's crazy. On another note, do you have any preventative measures for bruising around the spine in karts?

@@LastTenth Sure, SLOW DOWN! Seriously, its about the seat and g force. You may want to try to keep the kart in smooth areas or set up suspension to lessen chatter in corners if yours does that. . They do make seats with high sidewalls or look around and see what type of flak jacket everyone is wearing. . I cracked my ribs twice WITH a flak jacket so dont feel bad. I have even had bruising in my Porsche so its normal.

@@LastTenth Love your channel. You should definatly have a rib protector jacket or you can easily crack or break a rib which can result in a punctured rib and sideline you for months. Ask around at the track and get the best one you can find. I will probably also fill the gap in your seat so in the long rin you wont have to buy a new seat.

Sorry but you’re missing a very important factor. The wall (by design) is flexible and has some “give” to it. One of the keys to Ross’s move was staying close to wall all the way down the back stretch, narrowing the angle of contact when the wall ride began. Had he started lower he would have shot up at too harsh of an angle and the barrier would have given into the weight, creating an indent the car would have gotten stuck in. Had he started the wall ride earlier, he would have risked not being able to turn the wheel, limiting the effectiveness and he still had to turn slightly…none of it was planned..just luck and courage

I've been a Nascar fan for 25 years and I've never seen a move like this. I also don't want it banned.
If Nascar wants to fix this problem without adding a new rule the answer is simple. Have a different transmission package at the short tracks ( Martinsville) that doesn't have a 5th gear. The only reason he went that fast and gained that much time was because he had a 5th gear option (Next Gen). Take that away and I don't see him gaining the spots he did. Thus while it'll still be legal drivers won't try it

    • @LastTenth

It won’t work every where, and who knows if Chastain just got lucky. I don’t think it will be a regular thing. A couple drivers might try it and if they fail then the move will slowly fade away. Also Bold moves like this are generally the type that creates new rules or rule modifications to prevent or limit this. Tracks like Dover, Bristol, Darlington, and Super Speedways where you are constantly pushing this limit what do you do there. I don’t think you can completely ban this move but maybe limit the time or distance a car can be on the wall.

  • @14Sciteach

It will be made illegal. As cool as it is, it's simply too dangerous, for all the drivers, to remain legal. In fact, they should probably change the rule now to save other drivers' lives, which means you necessarily have to disqualify Chastain. He was lucky it worked. If you angle into the wall too much, you'll ricochet back out into the raceway, into the other cars. That happens on accident a lot, but if this move remains legal, people will intentionally try it, which will increase the level of danger on the last lap.

  • @leoormesher2762
    @leoormesher2762 ปีที่แล้ว

i can see why they wouldnt want it legal. there would be the possibility of too much debris on the track that could cause accidents or premature failure of tires. there is also the issue of the damage to the car, which can be mitigated if you design some sort of roller to take the corner. but i feel like if that happens, then nascar is going to turn into wall riding simulator and they will just be wall riding every corner..... so probly best to ban it. it was cool, but if its not on a final lap, could be problematic.

He was in a fight with Denny Hamlin over the fourth spot in the Championship 4, and Denny being fourth while Ross being tenth, with the previous race results, would put Chastain out because he needed to at least overtake 2 more cars in order to make up enough points to remain in the top 4. Chastain owned what is called the “tie-breaker” over Hamlin, as he finished in second place more than Hamlin had done, whilst they had the same number of wins. So what he needed was to just grab 2 more points in the total to send him through to the final four. Come the final lap and Hamlin had made up more than 3 places in the last 10 laps, while Chastain hadn’t been able to close the gap (Points for Hamlin being 4134, and points for Chastain being 4132). Come the final turn, he had nothing to lose, so why the hell not try it. Since it worked, he finished fifth (fourth when Brad Keselowski was disqualified for the car not meeting minimum weight requirements) but most importantly ahead of Hamlin, meaning no matter what would have happened (other than himself being disqualified, i guess), Chastain definitely had at least the same points as Hamlin, and so he went through.

It's not legal, but the track stewards were that in shock at what they were seeing their brains didn't have time to process it being it only took 4 seconds and it not be successfully done prior.
Obviously the yellow flags should have been up because a car was crashing and as anyone knows you can't overtake on a yellow.
This wasn't a rule or driver issue it was a complete track stewards issue.
Lots of buthurt people won't like that, but that's how it is.

They can't really penalize Ross for doing it this time, because there is currently no rule against it. But I would be surprised if they allowed it to happen again. I see a lot of potential safety concerns that Nascar probably doesn't want to be responsible for.
They'll probably implement some sort of rule about entering a corner without making any attempt to slow down or control your speed. I don't see how they could make a rule against hitting the wall since that's not always in the drivers control. And they have to make allowance for brake failure, stuck throttle, getting shoved by another car, etc.
But Nascar could argue that intentionally turning your car into an uncontrolled missile is a safety hazard to other drivers, safety crew, and potentially fans in the grandstands if debris flies over the fence. May not be a problem at Martinsville, but could be if a driver tried this at a higher speed track.
