This mama was no saint. She took on a child tht she couldn't care for then expected her adolescent daughter to take care of him all while trying to instill the value of not having a baby at an early age & letting her near adult son do as he pleased. She was a mess & Tasha actually held the family together through all her sacrifice & "helping." Women who do things like this irk me.
@@starlightrocks7 Yes, he was a foster child. Joan adopted him, knowing he was a (very) special-needs child. He doesn't speak & he was born addicted to crack. Tasha was forced to do what the MOM signed on for. I am all for every member of the family helping out......but Tasha is not the parent.
21:55 I remember that scene & thought it was perfect. The way Dion walks over on his own volition & blinks several times sadly.....basically saying he was sorry for what happened. And Tasha understands & they make up......all with no words at all. Excellent stuff.
Looking back the Mama should've never adopted that special needs child just for the children to take care of. Caring for a child is a lot of work and a special needs one is extra work.
Is it possible that the writer did it to show the struggle of taking care of a special needs child while struggling as a single parent, people keep bashing this mom in the comments as if it's a reality show, she is just following the script that she was paid to act. Back then women took on the responsibility of taking care of family members or neighbor kids inspite the fact that they themselves were struggling, it was just part of the community spirit. And as far as doing it for the money well back then the foster money was barely enough to take care of the child so I don't know if that was the case here.
In some ways ahead of its time, but in other ways "behind" it. Shows that featured realistic portrayals of working-class Black characters had their heyday in the 1970s (Good Times, Sanford and Son, What's Happening). But ever since the Cosby Show, the successful shows (sitcoms at least) became those with very "upwardly mobile" characters.
Tasha had a right to feel the way she did. The mom is trifling for bringing in the crack baby and forcing the daughter to take care of him. Single mom is hard and now making the daughter a single mom without even having a child
@@WaterfallVee Exactly. Joan was already having a hard time, so she makes it worse. She did a nice thing, but made it way too hard for everyone else. I bet she never even asked her family if they wanted a new kid.....never mind one that needed so much help.

My lil cuzz Tasha did her thing on this show, playing the lil sis of Larenz Tate which she is actually three years older than him, she was 21 turning 22 one month before that went off the air in 94 and my lil cuzz can sing to
Tashas character is the daughter that has to grow up too fast because they are filling in the spot that the dad left, I see this so much in the black community how the boys are coddled by the mom and the daughter is expected to be the fill in parent, given bottom of barrel treatment. I love that this show is so authentic in that way, it kinda points out that scary dynamic
I watched this show when it debuted, I loved it! I was so ticked off when they canceled it. I wonder if it got 'too real' (God forbid) for the times. I remember when a certain female singer debuted a few years later, who just happens to be the cashier at the Co-Op:...I was like "HEY ITS LUCILLE!!" We know her as Jennifer Lopez! :)
I'm sure the mother adopted Deon to cope with the loss of her first-born but taking care of a child with disabilities while struggling to balance work isn't good. Forcing the daughter and not both teens to take care of the younger brother is also cruel.

Watching this now takes me back to when I first saw it and how pissed I was at the mom. I hate parents that have kids and make the other kids responsible for them. You shouldn’t have any kids if you can’t afford them or take care of them yourself. A special needs kid is a 24 hour job and it isn’t Tasha’s responsibility. She shouldn’t be neglecting her homework and missing her childhood taking care of a kid her mom brought home on her own. She had every right to feel how she did and she wasn’t wrong for it. She can’t afford the 2 living kids she has left, then she goes and gets a slow, problematic crack baby for them to raise. She lets Andre do whatever and leaves Tasha to handle all the responsibility. No way in hell should Tasha be responsible for taking him to therapy session, feeding him or doing cuddle time. It’s ok to maybe pick him up from school every now and then, but all that stuff everyday. It ain’t like she working at a good job making lots of money.
