"It was one of those days when everything went well."
Daniela Ryf came to Challenge Roth in late June as a two-time champion and left with not only her third title, but also with a world record for the Iron-distance when she took ten minutes off of Chrissie Wellington’s Challenge Roth time of 8: 18 with an epic time of 8: 08. Ironically, Chrissie happened to be at Challenge Roth in June and was there to greet Daniela at the finish. Heading into Kona, Daniela is a five-time Ironman World Champion going for six and guess who just happens to be going to Kona this year? Yep, six-time Ironman World Champion Natascha Badmann, who is also from Switzerland, is getting inducted into the Ironman Hall of Fame this year and could be at the finish to greet Daniela if she just happens to win her sixth and tie Natascha for the second most wins for a woman in Ironman World Championship history. Now that would be awesome to see!

About 9 or 10 years ago when i was first getting into triathlon, I recall Daniela being described as an "ice princess" or cold. I've since learned - and this interview is evidence of it - that she is kind, humble, respectful, and much more. She's a phenomenal athlete and shows gratitude whether she finishes first or much lower.

Thank you for saying that. For me it's perhaps the combination of being confident in her own abilities, quiet and softly spoken along with being laser focused during her races that gives that vibe to people that she is cold. But through the interviews, her post race attitude as well, I see a really warm, grateful and supportive person. She does not ooze arrogance, she has managed the perfect balance of confidence/moderate emotional reaction/realistic approach to her goals and without glorifying her to me her attitude is what makes her the big champ even more than her achievements. They can be surpassed one day but how she treats her opponents, the race, her gracefulness in defeat and her gratefulness in winning is smth I will always have as a shining example.

Very true - what Americans or English people often forget is how uncomfortable some people are when talking in a foreign language (especially when there are hundreds or thousands watching) which they are not used to.
The more you do it, the easier it gets but it's never like an interview in your own language.

Good luck Daniela ! Yes please, as you ease into the next chapter of your life, try to motivate young people (not just from Europe, but get those Americans interested as well !) A few of them will become endurance athletes, but if most of them will live a longer, healthier, fit life what a great legacy goal for you ! If you guys would approach that challenge like you approach IronMan, no doubt we could make a huge impact.

Daniela come to Roth with LESS training.
Sam Lailow - had Covid just before Nice and training less.
I can see the link, triathlete training too much close to the big races!
