    this idea has obsessed me for years - imagine this in the place of chimney pots in cities which no longer allows fires.

      First it looks like these could pay for themselves pretty darn quick
      Second I'd use air bearing in place of PM.
      I thought of the same idea of placing these on the roof too, so how about replacing wind-driven turbine exhaust ventilator, Along with the wind the attic heat would add additional force.

      @@BOBPortlandOr Question... How will you provide air as a bearing, for less energy than the turbine provides?
      The magnets can be yanked from an old failed microwave oven for totally free, and cost absolutely nothing to operate.
      While I may have played 'devil's advocate' about magnetic drag, I do know that it indeed, is, at this point in time, the least power robbing form of bearing known.
      Since each of these turbines are only going to produce a pittance, unless you plan on making one as big as a house its self, you will still be more power ahead to use magnets than to use air, and this only because air GAINS efficiency with surface area.
      That reminds me of one of my plans for using water as a bearing.
      It only makes sense in certain scales of power production, due to inherent inefficiencies, while, at the same scale as I WOULD use water as a bearing, magnets would cost the price of a small city.
      One needs to engineer a system to work to scale, and at the scale Rob is showing us, magnets are just impossible to beat.

      And I wouldn't have bought my Elegoo (managed to get my hands on a Neptune 3 Plus last month!) which I've absolutely loved learning how to use. I've already designed some bespoke mitre saw stops in Sketchup and 3D printed them for my workshop (available free on Printables - user keebs). Now I've started learning FreeCAD this week, so I could design and 3D print some desk cable grommets for some new bedroom furniture for our children ... printed them this morning! And much, much more! Thanks Rob!!!

      @@ThinkingandTinkering the difference is that now instead of spending a day constructing the parts for the machine, you get a much better balanced set of parts, from the 3d printer with less hands on time, giving you more time to make and edit the videos, which also means more iterations of a project as you develop the ideas

    If you’re worried about it flying apart in a strong breeze , put a second serpentine generator with another maglev/bearing setup on top . That way you could double up the generation

      The art is to capture low winds here, so, having more coils/magnets will increase resistance. But if you have a way to electronically controll when you draw current, or not, by closing/opening circuits and drawing power you can increase resitance and performance as the wind speed increases, like a energy recovery brake on a car works. This circuitry will broaden you range of operable windspeeds.

      or put a circlip at the top of the shaft. There is enough space to prevent it touching the cage and causing friction, but will allow the cage to rise a couple of mm in higher winds

    I only just found your channel online yesterday and I have to say, it's very cool to watch someone testing and sharing all of these ideas. Some of the same ideas and questions have been bouncing around in my head for years! It really is satisfying to watch you work out the theoretical parts and explain the basic math and science behind it all. I also appreciate that you name drop other people and their projects all the time too. All of the prototyping that you do is fun to watch as well AND you just hand out all of your work to everyone. Free to use and improve. That is VERY generous of you! Thank you for all your time and effort! Your selflessness and humility are greatly appreciated!

    After watching you talk about making the wind generator I had an idea Robert. When you wind the wire around dowels they put a kink in the wire. Way better to use a circle of sorts which will prevent you for putting any kinks in the wire bundle. This was taught to me when I first started rewinding and rebuilding electric motors. That was way long ago I would rather not even say the time span.Keep on making great informative videos for us all to learn from fella. Peace

    Im curious to see your maglev combined with your feather turbine. The extra light weight of the feather turbine might help with efficiency.

      I was brain storming about ways to increase efficency on your turbines. You cant really make the viens on the feather turbine taller since they overlap with each other but you could make them wider, thereby increasing the overall radius/surface area of the turbine. You could also taper the veins so they are thinner in the center of the turbine and much thicker at the outter edge to reduce overlapping (and friction) and further increase surface area of each vien. If all the veins lay completely flush then there is no way for the air to get in to pop them up so maybe only have the outter edge overlap. If they did lay flat, perhaps a little air scoop somewhere along the vein would help get the air into the system to get it started. Naturally, all this would increase the weight. It would require some testing to find that sweet spot between weight and efficency.
      As for the tall turbine, i was thinking you could add a shroud that is a cylinder cut in half vertically, so only half of the turbine is exposed to the wind at a time. The shroud would rotate around the whole drum and could use a wind vane on the top to orient it in the direction of the wind. This way the half of the turbine that is going against the wind would be shielded to hopefully reduce any losses induced by fighting against the wind.

    This two-piece design split into three parts (coil - magnets - blades) would make the top easily interchangeable and provide an excellent platform for comparing the efficiency of the different types of turbines seen so far! I would be very keen to see such comparisons 🙂

    This is absolutely brilliant, its perfect for low breezes, even caused from vehicles driving by.. . I wonder if it could be made out of PETG ? Here where i live it gets in the 33C every summer for weeks on end sometimes, and I would like to make it out of durable plastic that can take the abuse. Thank you Robert for all your time spent .

    These sorts of things would be ideal for putting in place of roof vents, and for piping your clothes drier vent directly into the center of. Maybe even having a few in the bed of your truck for portable charging? I wonder how these would work in series inside of a larger pvc pipe, to be used with the Darwin wind turbine?     Literally just managed to find 4 of these cages in the week along with a pneumatic ram so i happy to see this being used, love the maglav design, I have plans to build lots of these to the base of my bed, be able to gather electricity from the up and down movements that beds are subject to 😂

    Realy cool. I would be very interested in seeing what a bigger version of this could generate.
    Like, i get that this is simply a proof of concept. But getting a substancial wattage out of something is more satisfying than simply lighting an LED.

      If I'm not mistaken, the device he connects all these devices to to measure voltage has a set load so all are compared equally. Perhaps go back to that video where he presents it for the e act numbers.

      that's because I realised measuring amps all the time was a waste of time and pretty dull lol - we are working with the same coil and magnet arrangement at the moment mate - I did measure amps and volts once or twice but after that - what is the point? Volts will give a direct measure and amps is just a matter of force in less losses in the generation system - as losses in the generation system are the same why bother? we know force in as it is governed by wind speed - so to asses this system we only really need wind speed and volts - the I have finished making assessments and build the final version then it would be time to measure amps again - and it is likely I will do exactly that. Anyway for your peace of mind it was about 35ma

    You could make a second piece like the bottom plate, add a second bearing and axle base for the top of the squirrel cage fan, add a second row of magnets and a coil for the top. Add a second mag lev ring to the top and you won’t need to worry about high wind storms. It will also double power output without significantly increasing drag from weight. You can also increase length of blades by increasing the rigid structure at the top and securing it at both ends

    There is a lot that could be done to improve it that is for sure. Adding a second generator arrangement at the top, adding stationary veins around the outside to compress more airflow as well as suction on the opposite side as well.

    it may only produce a small amount in a light breeze but that wall could hold a half dozen or so all hooked to a charge controller to trickle charge a battery or maintain a battery in a back up system

I'm curious if a 3rd ring mag secured to the shaft on the inside of and opposing the turbine mag would create a magnetic sandwich effect to keep the turbine in place yet maintain minimal friction - in other words, a North-North-South-South ring mag arrangement ??

    I could see these being mass produced and used as remote gadget charging stations like on hiking paths, bike trails, maybe for camping. you could add another coil and magnet assembly to the top of the wind catcher. magnets on the wind catcher and coil built into a table like structure that sits over the device. legs of table could be angled to direct wind in derection of turn wanted.

    Thank you for sharing this knowledge. We tried to do this design as a science project (adding a Darrieus top as well). We are running into an issue, only producing mV of power, and only at low RPM. What is the impedance of the coil expected? (We used 32 and 38 awg copper wire, 400 turns and are seeing the same result with either coil)

    Hi Robert, I have watched many of your videos. I enjoyed your video on making an arcamedies screw with CDs and thought you'd be the man who could test this idea easily. I believe it would be possible to create a screw pump powered by a water wheel. If you had two water wheels under the falling water, one to power the screw pump and another to generate power, you would have a self sustaining system. The main considerations would be to have the tube of the screw stationary to bear the weight of the water, leaving the screw responsible for the lifting of the water. You would also require a top reservoir to feed the water wheels. I wasn't sure how else to contact you, so I hope this comment interests you. Thank you, and keep up the inspiring work.

      I don't know if that would work mate - I actually believe it wouldn't - but that's just me so it is unlikely I will do it - if you think it might work it is probably better you give it a go if you want it done anytime soon mate

    Hello Robert, thanks for your videos. I think some kind of a sail could be used to get more power from the wind. It would be not rotation motion but some swing motion like trees do. Or maybe we could even use the trees, because they are heavy and they are swinging on the wind. The thing is how to get the power. 🙄

    The addition of your feather turbine onto the top of this would be interesting... downward forces pushing the coil closer together. Self adjusting pitch helps with initial momentum and continuing at high velocity.

    What amperage did you get out of it ?
    Which printer could I make this turbine on. Because I'm now thinking of buying one of the elegoo 3D printers, but which one do I need for the size of the print ?
    The squirrel cage does it have two bearings one for the top and bottom of the metal stabiliser rod ?

    Great video as always. I have a question: If the magnets were in a mating conical configuration, could you omit the spindle shaft and ball race bearings? i.e. would the maglev bearing concept be stable without any other mechanical constraint? My thinking is that the friction could be reduced even further. I guess you would need an opposing pair of bearings otherwise the unconstrained wind turbine would just blow away in a high enough wind.
    The next problem would be buying or making such a setup. I was thinking that maybe individual magnets mounted in 3D printed cones might work. Another approach could be to use a lathe to turn a pair of mating conical steel/iron rings to mount on the existing magnets. Is any of this feasible?

    @Robert Murray-Smith is the coil count the same as the magnet count? ie the amount of tabs on the serpentine base. I have a few mini-kegs of beer I have emptied so going to use them in a Savonius wind turbine configuration for fun, do you happen to know the best configuration for two halves of a barrel? would it be outside edges touching (ie double the diameter) or overlapping 50%/75%?

    What if you use axial magnets instead of bearings? Offset them a little bit so the bigger ones is the lowest and the highest ones and then you can tighten the upper most downwards to stiffen the bearing effect and prevent the turbine from lifting.

    Just making a comparison with 1869. Why is voltage down so much? Is that just the difference if having the coil rotated 90 degrees or are the ring magnets affecting generation? The obvious differential is how fast it’s rotating (pull cord/ squirrel cage). Design aids itself very nicely to making a wall with multiple generators.

    This is awesome. Wonder how nice this will work with vertical blades changing the wind direction 🤔.
    Could even make the blades adjustable for large applications so when the wind is tomuch, you can basically shut it down by deflecting the wind.

      But have seen it in action on various TH-cam channels(not easy to find) and seems to work well.

    I wonder how much weight those magnets could handle since it just needs to not touch while spinning, so putting more wind catching action on top and maybe even some more coils held in place around it, might make a nice section of a wall, and just make a whole wall of them XD (funny thing is you can find those magnets in subwoofers all the time because people buy cheap subwoofers with the amp inside the woofer, and when that electrnic bit goes, the speaker is useless with out a powered subwoofer level output which most stereos don't have, that I have seen at least LOL (working on rigging one up that is not music oriented but to use the speaker to make a washing machine using the subwoofer to shake a container with water and soap in it for agitation and see how well it works for a mini cloths washer or automated dishwashing unit that will still have to have everything swapped into plain water and shook to get rid of soapy material :) )

    I'm wondering how much impact the large magnetic fields from those ring magnets is having interacting / interfering with the magnetic field from the tiny neodymium magnets at the rim - which are ultimately the ones interacting with the coil to produce the current. Maybe do a comparison of the output from this maglev version with a version using a standard non-magnetic (but more friction) thrust bearing?

    I wonder Rob how much potential power might be generated with a three coil set up.. We have steady winds here and I would like to build a system to tie into the grid so I think ( not sure) I need to end up with48V output and if I am not mistaken the three phase winding can be used to brake the system in high winds. two counterrotating Ugrinsky blades with a hub generator between them Mag lev or bearings either would work. I don't have a need for battery storage so I just want to feed it back to the grid and defray my cost. I have the area to install and connect several small 2 or 4 blade VWAT s

    I want to try that with your electrostatic motor design. After seeing the torque on Lasersaber's large motor, I've been very curious about input and output of power. I do not know if electrostatic motors or generators suffer from Lenz law effects.
    Any thoughts or observations from your tests?

      @@Unpopular_0pinion You can Google search for a more thorough answer. In a nutshell, as an electromagnetic motor is running, it creates an opposing force that fights against the rotation of the motor. Same for a generator or alternator. It is why electromagnetic motors/generators can not achieve overunity.
      Most of our power generation and use is from an electromagnetic source.
      But Dr. Murray-Smith made an excellent electrostatic motor and was driving it with a cheap high voltage transformer. It was spinning madly from micro amps of supplied power.
      With the good Doctor's rim generator design, I'd like to visit that experiment to compare the input power supplied to the output power provided.
      I'm trying to workout how to get access to a 3d printer.

      Durhams wood putty is water based and works just as well, no smell.

      @@justtinkering6713 Doesn't last as long, and is more permeable by water and acids.
      Can lead to the corruption of the insulation and the corrosion and shorting out of the coils, eventually leading to unit failure.
      Realistically, even for only limited weather exposure, it should be UV resistant marine grade epoxy.
      On top of that, a disc of Mylar [a cheap 99 cent emergency survival blanket works] should be applied to the surface of the epoxy before it cures, to reduce moisture contact and ensure a longer UV resistance.
      Just before one mixes and pours, cut the outer circle big enough to reach the edges of the area where the resin will go, and put a hole in the middle for the spindle, pour the resin, lower the Mylar, and with a small brush or cotton swab, sweep away any incidental bubbles for a good contact bond.
      Just put the aluminized side toward the resin to keep IT from corroding.
      The Mylar will [effectively] last for longer than we will live, and the aluminum will make sure that the resin does the same.
      NEVER use ANYTHING porous, OR organically active, or it WILL ruin your coils.
      They will 1, let in water, and 2, either allow in acids, or 2, allow in acid creating microbes.
      Either of those will destroy the very fine insulation on the wire and short it out.

    Ive made something that can can turn 2 way movement into just 1way forwards thrust using gears, i was gonna make a scooter with it on but never got round ,
    basically can take a pendulum movement back and forthe and turn it into just a forward movement but probably work with your thing aswell, the wind should act on a pendulum with abit of weight be better than a standing stick which could fall over

    make it adjustable a bit so it can be tuned ....

    🤔 Also a nut on the end of the fixed shaft will lower the distance gap/clearance between the turbine and the coil, it will increese the output voltage. 👍🏻

    How did you (or did you) manage the gap between the magnets and the coils? Heuristic? ie by tinkering? Seems like you'd want as small a space as possible without the turbine bottoming out when it starts to vibrate

    This is really beyond description. Words cannot convey how much the series about the wind generation inspired me. Just one question though, is how "long" is the serpentine coil or at least how can I measure the length to get the best fit for any size of circle? 👍🏻👍🏻👌🏻🏆

      Think about it, you have the parts going radially in and out, and then the bends. The bends are a semicircle, so pi radians or 180 degrees, times the radius of the bend. Well, we have the diameter of the bend from the spacing of the slats so divide by 2.
      That's length of a slat * number of slats * pi/2 * spacing between slats (start to start or midpoint to midpoint). Of course the outer radius is larger so you might want to take an average of inner and outer, and add a little extra for wiggle room.

      He has a video on how to make the coil. He suggests you wrap the empty slots with a string first to get your length. Then just multiply that until it’s your desired thickness.

    Does the magnetic field from the maglev magnets affect the output of the coil? If you shielded the maglev component from the coil would the power from the coil increase, decrease, or have no change whatsoever?

      A magnet spinning about its polar axis isn't going to generate anything. There's no change in magnetic flux.

    Please rob, try the infamous VAWT wind booster and measure rpm increase with and without it. twice rpm increase will quadruple energy production for any given wind speed.

      no - you would get a higher voltage - but power out is always less than power in - you can't get more than the wind is providing

    Install the squirrel cage in a rotating housing to concentrate the wind energy and reduce the losses due to the drag on the back side of the squirrel cage.
    Just for fun, drive the generator section using a variable-speed motor at different RPMs and record the output under load to measure the generator output (volts & amps).

      I have already done that mate - loads of times actually - it's basically a squirrel cage fan - you need to get one of those - you find them in tower fans

      Just like the genius behind Peter Sharps cycloturbine. You have to think beyond his videos because he didn't have the facilities to make a serious turbine. Most of his tests were using string and paper wind turbines. People pointing out the weaknesses in a design sometimes take the blinders off the the inventor, sometimes inventors get tunnel vision and keep pursuing their dream and can't or won't see anything else, a lot of times because they have so much invested in their own idea. Maglev is great but its not perfect and having the magnet rotor crash into the stator is not good. I guess mechanical limits on a maglev system would be part of the solution. Instead of crashing into the working parts it could bump into a mechanical limit bearing.
