Lovely pieces. only the opening of the third song can Dallapiccola's direct influence be heard, I think (it's a reference to the breeze in the tunnel The Prisoner feels in the opera of the same name). Marvellous harp writing, and a definitely new modernist approach to word setting. Dallapiccola would set these poems (as in the Tre Poemi of only four years earlier, one of which is also a Joyce setting) in a much 'neater', canonic and crystalline way - you feel Berio wants to break out and 'problematise' the texts much more.
thank you professor link this piece is pretty cool
Uno dei brani più sorprendenti di Berio. Evidente omaggio ai suoi maestri.
....just GREAT.
Really chilling and evocative music.
Pronunciation is a bit funny, but good piece, and recording
