I saw this opening performance of Tosca with Placido Domingo. My dad who was a member of metropolitan guild took me. We were on the floor about 40 rows back. Lauren Becall was about 20 rows in front of us. It was such a memorable event. 1985. The stage itself was amazing and beautiful. It took my breath away.
I'm still not sure her voice is the best for the role but her acting is amazing. Every movement and expression is the real Tosca. Terrific incarnation of the diva
In terms of voice, she is fine. Lots of Wagnerians have sung the role, such as Nillson and Jones and they were perfectly fine. But both of them sang the role in a lighter voice. I think Behrens' singing was a little bit heavy and her middle register sounds a little bit wobbly. I would rather have a dramatic voice singing Tosca instead of a lyric voice. Most of those lyric sopranos cannot "scream" properly in the last scene. But anyway, really good acting from Behrens, especially the part when Tosca killed Scarpia. Behrens was criticised for screaming in that scene, but I think it adds some dramaticism and I love it. As for Placido Domingo, he was still decent in this recording, but not as good as the 1976 production. But his acting was still superb as always.
Great Zeffirelli production at the Met. Behrens was an... interesting... casting choice here, and I'm still ambivalent about it, but, her Vissi d'art is incredibly moving, which pleasantly surprised me. Placido Domingo's heart rending E lucevan le stelle brings down the house, rightly. From his verbal duel with Scarpia in Act 2 to his death scene, Domingo is so compelling, you can't take your eyes off of him. Thanks for sharing.
